Chapter 0003 – Nightmare Level Quest
”I’m sure you’re still curious about whether there are ghosts in the world or not, come play a little game, the truth will be the moment you open your eyes.”
The nightmare level quest was narrated very vaguely, it was not at all clear what exactly one had to do, it just gave off a spooky feeling.
”Looking at the quest description, it should involve playing a game, but just playing a game can be classified as Nightmare Level?” He had been trying to complete the normal difficulty quest, but he hadn’t rested for hours on end, and only barely managed to patch up all the mannequins within the time limit.
Flipping through his phone, the more Chen Ge looked at it, the more curious he felt, “Why don’t we give it a try?”
As soon as this thought appeared, it spread uncontrollably in his mind like a vine.
”Nightmare level quests have the highest rewards, besides these three quests refreshed today, I don’t have the confidence to complete the simple and normal quests at all, so I might as well take a gamble.”
Couldn’t last through the off-season, the House of Horrors would have to transfer and close down, Chen Ge was very clear in his heart about his current situation, and it was so hard to see the hope for change that he naturally wasn’t willing to let go of any opportunity.
”It’s decided, sooner or later we’re going to see a nightmare level mission anyway.”
Sitting up from the bed, Chen Ge tapped towards the last mission.
”Sure to accept the Nightmare difficulty daily quest? After accepting it, there is a possibility that it will trigger an unknown situation to appear.”
”OK.”
The phone’s screen flashed, and the real mission information surfaced.
”To see the other world, you need excessive courage, extraordinary luck, and a little help. The name of the following game is called Mirror You: enter the bathroom alone at 2:04 a.m. Lock the bathroom door and turn off the lights, face the mirror, and light a candle between the mirror and you. And then close your eyes, concentrate, and slowly murmur your name.”
”Anything can happen in the darkness, perhaps a strange face will surface in the mirror, maybe there will be a pair of scarlet eyes peering around the corner, or maybe blood is seeping outward from the walls and the doorway, all you have to do is to remain unperturbed and stand quietly in front of the mirror.”
”The mission will automatically succeed after half an hour, provided that you don’t open your eyes no matter what happens during that time.”
After reading the mission introduction, Chen Ge’s heart was a little hairy: “Could there really be another world that ordinary people can’t see?”
It was still early to 2:04 am, so he didn’t rush to move, and searched online for something related to this game.
Not a moment later, it really let Chen Ge find some, some people were doomed because of playing this game, some were incoherent, several times mentioning disfigured faces, and even more disappeared in their own homes, suspecting that they were dragged into the world in the mirrors.
”One by one, they are so detailed and realistic, just like ghost stories.” The more Chen Ge looked at it, the more curious he felt, he himself ran a haunted house, and every day he was figuring out how to scare people and how to bring visitors a more frightening experience within the safety limits. After reading all the introductions to this game, he felt like a new door was opening.
”Playing a horror game alone in a haunted house late at night, it’s exciting to think about it!”
He checked his cell phone’s charge and felt the need to record this historic moment.
”I’m going to videotape the whole thing later, if it’s really that scary, maybe I can add a new item to my haunted house.” He rummaged through the box for candles and lighters and waited until 2:00 a.m. and took what he had prepared to the first floor bathroom of the haunted house.
The reason why he came to the first floor bathroom for this game was also well thought out by Chen Ge, in case something scary really appeared during the game, he could just jump out the window and leave.
The haunted house was dead silent in the dead of night, and a certain young man whose life could be spared for the sake of saving electricity took a flashlight and a candle, and without much hesitation locked himself into the narrow, cramped bathroom.
”The closed and dark environment is most capable of triggering people’s inner fear, and the bathroom is the most gloomy place in the whole house. Mirrors, doors, sinks and these props seem to be ordinary and unusual, but in fact they are the most capable of bringing people psychological hints in daily life. The person who designed this game is very smart, he knows how to grasp the weaknesses of people’s innermost being and create the deepest horror by utilizing the simple environment.” Chen Ge had a deep understanding of thriller and horror that distinguished him from normal people, analyzing and learning at the same time.
”True fear actually doesn’t need too many expensive props, it only needs to amplify the visitor’s deepest insecurities, and he will be defeated by himself.” Chen Ge took a deep breath, turned on the camera function of his own cell phone, and said to the screen, “I don’t know exactly what kind of consequences this game will produce, if I have an accident, please pay attention to the person who has picked up this cell phone, and make sure to save this video, it will be a key, a key that opens the lock of lies.”
After saying that, Chen Ge fixed his cell phone next to the sink, from this angle it was just enough to capture Chen Ge, and the mirror opposite him at the same time.
”It’s one minute past two, and there are still three minutes to go.”
Waiting for death was more terrifying than death itself, and in the silent bathroom, any breeze was magnified, and as the time approached a little bit, Chen Ge’s heartbeat became faster and faster.
He looked at the time on his cell phone screen, and when the minute hand was pointing to four, he turned off the flashlight and lit the candle, placing it between the mirror and himself.
The wavering flame became the only source of light in the darkness, standing in the middle of the mirror and reality, as if it was a guiding soul light, trying to draw out whatever was in the mirror.
Chen Ge looked at himself in the mirror, and vaguely even felt a little strange: “Has the game started?”
He slowly lowered his head, closed his eyes, and whispered his name.
”Chen Ge, Chen Ge, Chen Ge ……”
Continuously chanting one’s name would slowly cause a sense of unfamiliarity to emerge towards that name, which was similar to repeatedly going to write a certain Chinese character, and by the end of the writing, one would not even be able to recognize the character.
In order to avoid this situation, Chen Ge would silently count three seconds every time he finished reciting his name, and he was also counting the time by doing so.
After all, the prerequisite for the success of the mission was that no matter what happened within half an hour, one could not open one’s eyes to see it.
”It’s after two in the morning, alone in a haunted house, candles lit, eyes closed, standing in front of a mirror and making a game of it. If I wasn’t in the process of experiencing it myself, I definitely wouldn’t believe that someone would go and do such a thing.” Chen Ge silently chanted his name as he tried his best to stop himself from imagining things.
”This game is full of psychological hints, and the most difficult part is not dealing with the so-called ghosts and all the legends, but in restraining yourself. As long as you don’t open your eyes, there should be no danger.”
Easier said than done, after getting through the first ten minutes, the unexpected appeared.
