Chapter 310: Revealing the Real Culprit
Chen Shi and Lin Dongxue descended to the first floor, looking somewhat defeated. Lin Dongxue complained, “That was just a servant, but he sure had a big mouth… What’s next?”
“Call your brother! Bring a lot of people.”
“What? You’re planning to go all out now?”
“I think X might be here. After you call, go to Mr. Lu’s room and guard it. Don’t let anyone in except Dr. Xu. I’ll stay outside and ensure no one leaves.”
“Isn’t that too risky?”
“Mr. Lu has gathered all these doctors, which means the surgery is imminent. X won’t let the surgery happen, so the sooner we resolve this, the better… Even though he’s a grumpy old man, I don’t want him dead.”
“That last part was a bit unnecessary!” Lin Dongxue chuckled, pulling out her phone.
Just as she finished the call, all the lights went out. The man with the slicked-back hair yelled, “Damn it, the old man’s machines!”
In the dark, there was a flurry of footsteps. Chen Shi urged, “Someone is trying to kill him. Hurry upstairs and don’t let anyone but Dr. Xu in!”
“What about you?”
“I’ll handle this.”
Lin Dongxue quickly went upstairs as a crowd rushed towards Mr. Lu’s room. Lin Dongxue shouted, “Nobody goes in!”
The slicked-back man snarled, “Who do you think you are? Who gave you the right to give orders here?”
The glamorous woman recognized Lin Dongxue, “I saw her earlier. Mr. Lu didn’t welcome her, so why is she here?”
Out of options, Lin Dongxue flashed her badge, “Is this a good enough reason? Dr. Xu, get in there and save him. Everyone else, stay put and don’t move.”
The slicked-back man frowned, “I’ll go check the electrical box!”
The glamorous woman said, “I’ll go too!”
As they left, the sound of Mr. Lu struggling to breathe echoed from his room. Dr. Xu rushed out, “The dialysis machine and ventilator are down. He won’t last five minutes…”
“We should take him to the hospital!” a servant suggested.
“There’s no time,” Dr. Xu said desperately.
Lin Dongxue bit her lip, realizing they wouldn’t make it to a hospital in time. She could only trust Chen Shi. “Do your best. My partner is working on it.”
“If he dies, it’s not my responsibility!”
“I’ll vouch for you.”
Downstairs, a group was frantically checking the electrical box, which had been doused with water and burned out. Chen Shi pushed them aside, inspecting it. “Get me gloves and electrical tools!”
“Who are you?” someone asked.
“Now’s not the time! Hurry! I can fix it!”
Someone ran to get the tools. Chen Shi put on rubber gloves, took the electrical tools, cut the wires on both sides of the box, bypassed the box, and reconnected them, wrapping them tightly with tape. A doctor said, “This won’t work. The power load is too high; the equipment will burn out.”
“Turn on all the lights and appliances to spread the load… Quick!”
People scattered, turning on everything they could. Chen Shi restored power, and the medical devices in Mr. Lu’s room came back to life. Mr. Lu took a deep breath of oxygen, opening his eyes again.
Dr. Xu sighed with relief, “Thank goodness. That was close.”
Lin Dongxue also breathed a sigh of relief, thinking how dangerous it was for Mr. Lu to have the machines at home. It made it easier for someone to harm him.
She noticed a servant sneaking away. “Where are you going?”
It was the same servant who had been rude earlier. “I’m getting a wet towel for Mr. Lu.”
“Don’t move. Nobody moves!”
“Why not? Who put you in charge?” The other servants began to grumble, “Are you responsible if something happens to Mr. Lu?” “The culprit who sabotaged the power is still out there!” “The police are just showing off here. Why don’t you do something useful?”
“Everyone, calm down. We’re handling this step by step. Follow our instructions and don’t cause chaos,” Lin Dongxue ordered, quieting the murmurs.
Chen Shi arrived, saying, “Everyone, head downstairs. The police will be here soon to handle this.”
Hearing the police were coming, the servants obediently moved downstairs. Chen Shi and Lin Dongxue stood at the stairs, the only way to the second floor. The living room was crowded, and many people didn’t understand what was happening.
Chen Shi whispered to Lin Dongxue, “Give me the handcuffs.”
Taking the cuffs, Chen Shi signaled Lin Dongxue to reveal her identity. Lin Dongxue showed her badge, “We are police officers investigating a case. We suspect the culprit is in this room.”
The slicked-back man protested angrily, “This is outrageous! Investigate if you must, but don’t disturb Mr. Lu. You’ve seen his condition.”
Chen Shi said, “This case is directly related to Mr. Lu’s safety.”
He approached the slicked-back man, “Your name?”
“Shi Zilu…” the man reluctantly replied. “I’m the vice president of Mr. Lu’s company, almost fully in charge.”
“Why do you call Mr. Lu your father?”
“You heard that?” Shi Zilu looked embarrassed, glancing around. “It’s just a private term. I consider him my godfather, but we’re not related by blood.”
“Recently, did Mr. Lu assign you to arrange a paternity test for someone else and him?”
“No such thing!” Shi Zilu flatly denied.
“Really?” Chen Shi looked around at the varied expressions. “Everyone here knows Mr. Lu has a biological child from his younger days. Since his two sons are gone, he summoned this child because he urgently needs a kidney. Mr. Lu didn’t want any accidents before the surgery, so the child’s identity was kept secret. But to some, this sudden appearance threatens their interests…”
Chen Shi stopped in front of the glamorous woman, “Your name?”
“Shi.”
“Ms. Shi, I know your relationship with Mr. Lu. You are currently the most likely to inherit his wealth, so you wouldn’t want this biological child to interfere…”
“That’s nonsense!” she shouted.
“I met Mr. Lu half a year ago. He was in good health. Why did he suddenly fall ill…”
“He’s old. Isn’t it normal to get sick?”
Chen Shi gestured for her to stop interrupting, “Seeing him now, I suspect he was poisoned, slowly over time. I don’t know if you did it, nor does it matter. What matters is, the poisoner didn’t spare his biological child either…”
Chen Shi suddenly turned and punched the pale-faced servant, quickly handcuffing him. The room was filled with shock. Chen Shi rolled up the servant’s left sleeve, revealing a prominent vein, confirming his suspicion.
Chen Shi pressed the servant’s head down, “You are Wang Haitao… or should I say, the fake Wang Haitao!”
