Chapter 849: Dead End
Around 1 AM, Chu Wei and the drug-addicted couple arrived at the abandoned hydrological station. The woman, dressed in clothes very similar to Lin Dongxue’s, which they had stolen from a clothing store, uncomfortably tugged at her sleeves.
“Brother Wei, are you sure this is safe?” the drug-addicted man asked for the umpteenth time.
Chu Wei was losing his patience. “Just do as I told you. I’ll cover Arin’s head, and they won’t be able to tell it’s not her. Once we get the money, hit the guy from behind, and then we run.”
“What if he has a gun?”
“Even if he brings a rocket launcher, it won’t matter. Knock him out with one hit; what’s there to fear?”
“Oh… what if there’s more than one person?”
“Then we bail. I’ll call him and say he broke the deal… A tiger doesn’t eat its cubs. As long as we have the ‘cop girl,’ we’re safe.”
“Brother Wei…”
“What now?”
“I think our share of the money is a bit small…” the drug-addicted man muttered hesitantly, with the woman vigorously nodding in agreement.
Chu Wei growled in a low voice, “Don’t start with that now. If you don’t want to make this money, just leave. With your skills, where else could you make two hundred thousand so quickly? Eh?”
“Can we get twenty percent…?” the man timidly raised two fingers.
“What did you say!”
Chu Wei stared him down. Under that intimidating gaze, the drug-addicted man’s brief courage faltered. He hung his head in fear, letting the woman desperately tug at his arm without daring to argue further.
They finally reached the summit. It seemed the person with the money hadn’t arrived yet. The drug-addicted man yawned continuously and pulled out a marijuana cigarette to perk up, but Chu Wei slapped it out of his hand, snarling, “Smoke, smoke, smoke, that’s all you know. Get the money and go buy yourself cocaine, go blow your brains out for all I care! Go hide over there.”
The man pulled out a stick and set up an ambush.
Chu Wei took out a pillowcase, preparing to cover the woman’s head. She grabbed his hand, flirting, “Brother Wei, I want to be your woman.”
Chu Wei sneered. A million was on the line, and here was a woman throwing herself at him, but he was not interested in such trash. “Shut up!”
He tied the woman’s hands behind her back and walked her into the hydrological station as if she were Lin Dongxue, found a chair for her to sit on, and then sat down himself, lighting a cigarette and taking a deep inhale.
The wait was long and tedious, with the woman continuously trying to ingratiate herself, even touching his foot with hers, her motives painfully obvious. Chu Wei exploded, “Slut, I wouldn’t touch you for a nickel. Go back to that loser!”
She finally quieted down.
Chu Wei looked up through the broken roof at the moonlight, reflecting on the events of the past few days—narrowly escaping the police multiple times, and now sitting here was nothing short of a miracle. If he got the money, he’d run far away, start a new life, maybe even enjoy some domestic bliss.
Yawning again, Chu Wei opened his eyes to find a figure standing at the door, like a ghost, holding a briefcase.
“They’re finally here.”
Elated at the prospect of receiving the million, Chu Wei stood up to greet them, but suddenly a loud bang resounded, and he felt as if he’d been punched in the chest. Looking down, he saw a growing stain of blood spreading across his shirt, the cold seep of blood loss rapidly overtaking his body.
“Ah!”
Startled by the gunshot, the drug-addicted woman saw Chu Wei fall at her feet and scrambled to her feet to run, only to be shot in the back and collapse.
The hitman stepped forward, delivering a final shot to each of their heads, ensuring death.
Another gunshot sounded outside. The second hitman walked in, wiping his gun with gloved hands, followed by the sight of the drug-addicted man lying in a pool of blood.
The hitmen exchanged glances, and Hitman A pulled out his phone. “Mr. Lie, it’s done.”
“Is it her?” Lie Guoxiao’s voice trembled.
Hitman A uncovered the woman’s face, “Female, around 25, very thin, pale skin.”
The weeping intensified on the other end, “I’m a monster! To save myself, I killed my own daughter!”
“Sir, that’s the price of our line of work.”
“You’re right!”
