A+ A- Turn Off Light

Today, Tao Yueyue was wearing the outfit Lin Dongxue had helped her pick out, looking like a dapper young man. KK complimented her, “Yueyue, you’re looking better and better. How about marrying me when you grow up?”

“No way, you’re old and poor.”

“Haha, so straightforward.”

Chen Shi interrupted them, “What are you saying to my little sweetheart!”

“Where’s your wife?”

“She’s… busy.” Chen Shi instructed, “Help me get the employee list as soon as possible.”

“No rush, let’s blend in first!” KK picked up a phone, “Whoa, is this a mobile game? It looks like a AAA title!”

“Uncle Chen, is that caviar?” Tao Yueyue exclaimed as she happily ran to a table and started eating caviar cake.

Xu Xiaodong and Xiao Li were also engrossed in testing the latest social software, thoroughly enjoying themselves. Chen Shi thought, you guys are really blending in too well!

However, Haiguo Yang hadn’t shown up yet, and it was still early, so there was no need to be tense just yet.

Chen Shi picked up a phone that had several of the new apps installed. One app, “Personal Butler,” was advertised as a revolutionary mobile application. Chen Shi opened it and was prompted to enter some basic information, which he did.

A charming 3D character appeared, “Mr. Chen, I am your Personal Butler, here to provide you with advice anytime, anywhere. According to your data, you are currently in the upward phase of your career. Remember to take some time to be with your family!”

“Nonsense!” Chen Shi noticed some options and selected “Emotional Counseling.”

The 3D character continued, “You are a very considerate husband and a well-recognized good man. You’ve recently married, and are still in the honeymoon phase. However, as the novelty of marriage fades, a ‘red rose’ might appear in your life, challenging your family relationships. Please handle it rationally!”

Chen Shi’s eyes widened. This kind of prediction was beyond a typical app test. He muttered to himself, “Life Function?”

“How do you know about the Life Function?” a woman in glasses and a burgundy evening dress asked.

“Do you work for this company?”

“Yes, I’m in charge of coding,” the woman smiled and extended her hand, “Chen Anhe.”

Hearing this name, Chen Shi was startled. She was the graduate student who invented the Life Function. So she now worked for this company, and a businessman like Haiguo Yang would naturally use such a sophisticated tool for profit.

Chen Shi shook her hand, “I’m Chen Shi, a police officer.”

“A police officer?” Chen Anhe smiled, “So, you’re here to investigate Mr. Hai?”

“You know quite a bit. I also know you. You’re a math graduate student who once stood trial for murdering your husband. You consulted Gu You.”

“As expected of a police officer, such thorough investigation!” Chen Anhe smiled calmly, “Yes, the codebase for this app is indeed the Life Function. People have different interests, but there’s one thing everyone is interested in—themselves. The Personal Butler helps users understand themselves better.”

“Using it for an app is fine, but using it for crime is another matter!”

“You have no proof.” Chen Anhe turned to leave.

Chen Shi chased after her, “What you just said is proof!”

Chen Anhe propped her chin, looking into the distance calmly, “From ancient times to the present, humanity’s greatest puzzle has been fate. Isn’t knowing your future a wonderful thing? The Life Function lets me make the right choices every time. I believe one day it will become widely known, and crime rates will drop because potential criminals will be identified and stopped early.”

“I see this as a regression, like using witchcraft to judge criminals!”

“Mr. Chen, you simply don’t understand mathematics.”

“But I understand the law. A person who hasn’t committed a crime but is killed— is the killer a saint or a criminal?”

Chen Anhe looked at him, eyes glinting, “Every new thing is considered heresy by tradition, but time will prove everything.” She then whispered in his ear, “Mr. Chen, today is the third day. Twenty-four days later, it won’t be the case being dropped, but you giving up!”

With a sly smile, she walked towards a door. Haiguo Yang emerged from it, and they embraced and kissed, conversing softly.

Chen Shi stood in shock for a long time, then went to find Xu Xiaodong, who was playing a game with Xiao Li. Chen Shi snatched the phone, “Didn’t you check who Haiguo Yang’s wife is?”

“Oh, let me check now.” Xu Xiaodong quickly pulled out his phone and typed on WeChat.

Chen Shi took the phone again, “I told you not to discuss cases on this app!”

“Sorry…”

Chen Anhe’s boastful words had already revealed the truth to Chen Shi. The Human Observer was here, but the obstacle to moving forward was evidence.

Now he could only hope to catch the copycat and get information from him.

Later, Xu Xiaodong said, “Haiguo Yang’s wife is named Chen Anhe.”

“I see!” Chen Shi suddenly understood everything. It was Chen Anhe who had created the Human Observer.

“Should I tell everyone to shut down the group chat?”

“No… keep it open, keep discussing the case there.”

“Brother Chen, why the change of heart?”

“Just do as I say. Talk about anything, just like before.”

Chen Shi had a sudden idea. If Haiguo Yang was indeed collecting user privacy through these social apps, they could turn the tables.

He looked around and asked, “Where’s Yueyue?”

“Hmm, she was eating over there just now!”

Meanwhile, Tao Yueyue quietly followed Haiguo Yang, who was mingling with the guests, smiling and speaking briefly before moving on to the next group. Everyone praised the success of the new software.

Haiguo Yang then seemed to head towards the restroom. Tao Yueyue followed him down a corridor. She suddenly had a bold idea. If Haiguo Yang was the Human Observer, and she was a missed target, how would he react upon seeing her?

The corridor was empty. Tao Yueyue stood by a window, her heart racing as footsteps approached from the restroom.

The footsteps stopped behind her. Tao Yueyue turned around, and their eyes met. Haiguo Yang smiled, “Tao Yueyue.”

“You… you know me?”

“I observe everyone.”
