Volume3 Chapter17: The Corpse Array
We had been running for a long time, and were dizzy and confused. We couldn’t see the destination, and we were already suspicious. When we heard the cool counselor suddenly say this, Lao Yi stopped and asked him, “Counselor, what is the catch? What is the meaning?”
The cool counselor rubbed his chest and pointed to the ground, saying to us, “Two… young men, do you see this bone? Is it familiar?”
I smelled I raised the torch and sure enough, I saw a skull on the ground with a hole in it. It looked like the one he had crushed when he fell off the cliff. I felt a bad feeling in my heart and looked back. Sure enough, not far behind was the cliff.
Lao Yang looked around and complained, “Lao Wu, how did you lead the way? Isn’t this where we just came down?”
I didn’t I don’t know. This place looks the same everywhere. I didn’t notice it when we kept going. I don’t know if we got turned around at a fork in the road.”
Liang Shiyi calmed down and waved at us, saying, ‘No, you didn’t notice. I remember clearly that this path has always been straight, with no turns or forks. This is not simple. If I’m not mistaken, we may have been fooled by something.’
Lao Yang He knew something was wrong and his face suddenly turned pale. He said, “That’s bad. Could it be that the spirits of these corpses are protecting their sacred place and not letting us get close to the clearing?”
I smiled bitterly to myself. With so many corpses around, I don’t think anyone would believe that there is nothing evil about it. But I am absolutely fine.”
I knew I knew that this person did have some knowledge, so I asked him, “Master Liang, you should have more knowledge than we do in this area. What do you think is going on? Our torches won’t last much longer. When the fire goes out, we won’t be able to call for help. We have to think of a way quickly.”
Master Liang said, “In my opinion, the reason we have gone in circles is that there is something wrong with the arrangement of the bodies here. These thousands of bones are crisscrossed, and some strange magic may have been used to turn the entire cave into a maze. You know that Zhuge Liang’s eight-square diagram can trap hundreds of thousands of troops with just a few piles of stones. If a few piles of bones here can trap the three of us, then it’s not a piece of cake, is it?”
Zhuge Zhu Geliang drove his troops to take the rocks and set up a stone array on the beach of Yufanpu, near the mountain and the river, to block Lu Xun’s story. My old itch and I both knew about it, but the novel’s description was exaggerated. I simply didn’t believe that a few piles of rocks could have such a big effect. If that were true, why would they need to build so many tanks and cannons?
The old itch I don’t believe it either. I said to him, “Counselor, don’t try to fool us with the same tricks you used to fool the Guangdong boss. You’re stuck here too. I’ve heard about the Eight Array Diagram in the storytelling, but it’s not what you’re saying. Besides, we saw from the cliff that the bones here were in a messy and disorderly arrangement, and we didn’t find any special arrangement. How can it trap us in circles after we get down? Could it be that the corpses here can run away by themselves?”
After saying this At this, Lao Yang suddenly realized something and quickly covered his mouth, bowed to all sides, and said softly, “Good luck, good luck. The children don’t know what they’re doing. Please don’t be offended.”
Liang Shiyi said, “This is different. What you saw from above was a general idea. In this short amount of time, how could you have memorized the direction of the veins between the bodies? After After that, it will be pitch dark. If each corpse is placed slightly off-center, it could lead us to a pre-designed fork in the road, and we could be walking back without realizing it. The two young men are also veterans. I won’t say anything about the big picture, but we can’t underestimate the minds of the ancients.
I thought that what the cool master said made sense, but I couldn’t believe it completely. No matter what, there must be something fishy here. It’s probably not going to be easy to get to that open space. I asked him what he thought.
The cool master Master Liang sighed: “I’m not bragging, but I can easily break this formation. If nothing goes wrong, I’ll be able to capture the enemy. But everything takes time, and I’m afraid our torches won’t last that long. Besides, I think we have more important things to decide at this time.”
I knew I knew what he meant, and I felt a headache coming on. The main problem at the moment was not breaking the formation, but how to face our situation. Not walking was not a solution, and neither was walking. This time we were lucky to return to where we started, but if we walked again, it was not certain. When the torch went out, there would be no village in front or shop behind, and it would be strange if we didn’t die of starvation.
In fact, the easiest way to break the formation was to step over the corpses on the side, but no one mentioned this suggestion.
The stalemate After a few minutes, the flame on the torch flapped a few times and gradually weakened. Lao Yi looked at the torch and suddenly cried out, “Damn it, I have an idea. Why don’t we burn all the bones here with a torch and set the camp on fire for 18 miles?
When I I heard this person’s ideas were sometimes stupid and sometimes clever, and I scolded him, “The bones here are already almost petrified, they definitely won’t burn. And even if they do, you’re just burning yourself. Even if you don’t burn to death, you’ll be smoked to death. Forget it, I’ll do this. I’ll walk forward first, and you watch the direction of my torch. Once I move off course, you call me to stop, and we’ll know where the problem is.”
Lao Yang said, “No, if the torch goes out halfway, you’ll be in even worse shape. Who will save you then? We mustn’t get separated at a time like this.”
I was also anxious and just wanted to argue back, but the torch in my hand suddenly flickered twice and finally couldn’t hold on anymore, and it went out with a pop.
