Volume 7 Chapter 45: Footprints of the corpse
This is a very common thing. When traveling in the Gobi Desert, before entering an oasis, we usually don’t take off our upper bodies, but instead wrap our lower bodies in sleeping bags to keep warm, so that we can quickly get up in case of an emergency. I had seen Aning lying in the sleeping bag many times on the way here, and I was very familiar with her, but when I thought about it, I remembered that she was dead, and it felt very desolate.
But when I fell asleep, the corpse was clearly completely wrapped in the sleeping bag. Who turned her out? Could it be Pan Zi? What did he turn her out for?
I stood up and walked over to the corpse to take a look, and I found that something seemed a bit off. The corpse had indeed been moved, and for some reason, the hands were curled up unnaturally, and the whole corpse looked a bit strange.
I subconsciously looked around. It was dark, the swamp was different from the canyon, the trees around were sparse, there was nothing to shine on, the flame of the fuel can was small, and it was completely dark, so I couldn’t see anything.
I turned around and woke Pan Zi up. Pan Zi didn’t sleep deeply, and he woke up when I patted him. I asked him if he did it.
Pan Zi was puzzled. He came over to take a look, shook his head, and looked at me with a suspicious look. I saw that his expression didn’t seem to be fake, so I was even more puzzled.
I thought of the fat guy again, and I thought to myself, “Could it be that the fat guy is interested in the relics on Ning’s body? Does this bastard not even spare the things on his own people? But in my impression, although the fat guy is greedy, it is unlikely that he would do such a thing.
Pan Zi washed his face with the swamp water on one side, then walked over to the side of Ning’s body, turned on the miner’s lamp and looked down to see what was going on.
Ning’s face was still frozen in the expression of death, which now looked a bit scary. The corpse was wet from the rain, and Pan Zi squatted down to straighten out the hair on her face. We could see that the wound where Aning had been bitten had turned black and purple and was beginning to rot, and the skin on her body had also turned a mottled dark purple. The high temperature here had already begun to corrode this beautiful corpse.
Following the light, we found several mud marks on the corpse’s clothes. Pan Zi touched them, and it seemed that they had not been there for long. Following the mud marks, we suddenly discovered several small things resembling mud footprints on the side of the corpse.
Pan Zi looked at me and followed the mud marks, discovering that the footprints had spread from the swamp. Because of the rain, they were already very faint, but the ones next to the corpse were still very clear.
There is something in the swamp! Our nerves were on edge, our throats were tight, and we looked at each other. I turned around and woke up the fat guy and the others. Pan Zi stood up, picked up his gun, and followed the footprints to the edge of the swamp. He squatted down and looked into the water.
The fat guy couldn’t be woken up, but when the oil bottle touched him, he opened his eyes. I didn’t know if he was sleeping or not. When I told him the situation, he frowned.
We walked over to Pan Zi. The water was murky and we couldn’t see anything clearly. Pan Zi showed the muddy footprints to Fat Man and Mian Youbing again, saying, “Damn, it seems that something crawled up while we were sleeping.
After taking a look at the footprints, Mian Youbing’s face changed. He took the miner’s lamp and quickly swept around the corpse, blocking us from going any closer.
”What’s wrong?” I asked.
“There’s only one row of footprints, so the thing hasn’t gone yet,” he whispered.
