Chapter 49
Dean’s office.
“Knock knock ……”
Dean Cook frowned slightly, he had a neurological headache and didn’t like it when people knocked hard on the door, and said in a deep voice, “Come in.”
“Cluck ……” the door opened, two men and a woman walked into the office.
Dean Cook revealed a puzzled look, “Three, what can I do for you?”
David opened the door, “You’re the Dean?”
“Cook, just call me by my first name.”
David flashed his badge, “I’m Detective David from the ‘Robbery and Murder Division’ and I’m here at your hospital to investigate a case, can we talk?”
“What case?”
“A robbery case.”
“Are you mistaken, our hospital has not reported a robbery, nor has anything like it happened.”
“Don’t talk too much, the environment here is nice, but those people in the wards are not on vacation, just because it’s not in the hospital doesn’t mean it’s not out there for them.”
“OK, tell us what you’re here for.”
“We’d like to see Lawn Bull’s diagnostic report and medical record book.”
“Do you have a search warrant?”
“No, we’re just here for information and would like your assistance.”
“We can’t show the patient’s diagnostic reports and medical records to anyone else until we have the patient’s permission, it’s a hospital rule and I can’t violate it.”
“Lawn is in a coma, and by the time he wakes up, the suspect will probably have swum across the Pacific.”
“You can ask the family for permission, and if they allow it, we’re willing to cooperate.”
David sat back in his chair and leaned his body forward, “Cook, don’t complicate things, make things easier for yourself with others.
We’re just making a private inquiry now, and if there’s really something wrong, we can resolve it privately as well.
If you give me face, I’ll give you face.
If you don’t agree, the police will be delayed at most, and they can still find out what they want from other channels.
When we come with a search warrant, everyone will lose face, and we’ll do it in a public way.
If your hospital suffers because of this case, no one can help you.
You know what I mean?”
Cook pushed up his glasses, a little embarrassed, “That wouldn’t be in line with hospital rules.”
“Rules are dead, people are alive. We’re not allowed to look, but you can. Afterward we just need to talk like friends, LAPD friendships are precious.” After David finished speaking, he looked at Daisy who was on the side, “Ms. Lawyer, is this illegal?”
Daisy frowned slightly, “Theoretically it’s fine.”
“That’s enough.” David looked aside at Cook again, “What do you think? Mr. Dean.”
Cook was silent for a moment, “Lawn Bull?”
“Yes.”
“One moment, please, all three of you.” Cook dropped the sentence and went out coldly.
Luke sat down on the black leather couch and stretched out.
Daisy came over and whispered, “Is this really okay?”
“Is it illegal?”
“No.”
“That’s good enough.”
Daisy trailed off, “Is this how you guys usually work cases?”
“Only occasionally.” Luke added, “We deal with suspects who have committed felonies on a regular basis, and sometimes you have to be a little flexible in what you do.”
Daisy leaned in close to Luke’s ear and said, “Should I give your coworker a business card, I think he might need my help later. But wouldn’t …… that be a little rude.”
“Not for now, I’ll keep an eye on him.”
“Isn’t he a higher rank than you?”
“Even if I can’t keep an eye on him, the captain will cover him.”
“Captain Susan?”
Luke nodded slightly.
“Cluck ……” The door opened.
A female nurse walked in and poured a cup of coffee for each of Luke’s three.
Then she stood straight in the doorway with no intention of leaving.
After ten minutes or so, Dean Cook walked back with a sullen face and a document in his hand, signaling the nurse to leave first.
David put down his coffee cup, “Dean, thanks for the coffee, can we talk now?”
Cook’s eyes flickered, “Uh …… just a private chat between friends?”
“Yes.”
Cook asked rhetorically, “Can I trust our friendship?”
Cook asked this, making Luke a bit surprised, how it sounded a bit bawdy, a dean couldn’t possibly be bluffed by a detective, could he?
Question.
David held out his right fist, his tone certain, “Of course.”
Cook hesitated slightly and extended his fist to touch it as well.
This action made Luke even more surprised.
Wow, was the Inspector that awesome? Luke was more than a little excited about the promotion.
David also saw the problem and urged, “Cook, can we talk now? No need to be nervous, it’s just a chat.”
“I just looked at Lawn Bull’s diagnostic report and medical records and found some problems.”
“What kind of problems?”
Cook thought for a moment and said, “Lawn has quite a few traumatic injuries, the diagnostic report says he fainted and fell, but I’m afraid that may not be the case in my experience.”
“And in your experience, how were these injuries caused?”
“Electric shocks, beatings.”
David asked rhetorically, “If that’s the case, why didn’t your hospital call the police.”
“According to hospital rules, usually the attending physician in this situation either reports it or calls 911 ……”
“So why didn’t they do that this time?”
“I don’t know, Lawn’s attending is Brooke, he’s younger …… likely inexperienced.”
David bristled, “It’s also likely that it was intentional.”
Dean Cook mused for a moment, “Detective David, you just said it was just a private chat …… wouldn’t make too big a deal of it ……”
“Yea, I’m a man of my word, and I’m a man of my own convenience. Things that have nothing to do with the case, we won’t be in charge of or interested in.”
“Thanks.” Dean Cook breathed a sigh of relief.
Luke interjected, “Dean Cook, can we see the diagnostic report now?”
“Of course, of course, I was about to call the police on behalf of the hospital and would like to cooperate with your department.” Cook handed Luke the report with both hands.
Luke took pictures and sent the report to Susan.
She would ask the relevant technicians to identify it.
Twenty minutes later, Susan called, and the forensic scientist speculated through the diagnostic report that the injuries on Lawn’s body looked like they were caused by defense, in addition to possible electric shocks and abuse.
With this appraisal, Luke and David had a bottom in their hearts.
Luke smiled, “Mr. Dean, can I borrow the conference room?”
On the 3rd floor, inside Lawn’s hospital room.
Brooke, Caroline, and Sophia were communicating in low voices.
“Knock knock ……”
A knock came from outside.
“Come in.”
A young nurse pushed the door and walked in, “Dr. Brooke, the dean wants you to go to the fourth floor conference room for a meeting.”
“I know.” Brooke didn’t think much about it and turned around, “Mom, Sophia, I’m going to the meeting, call if something comes up.”
Hearing that her son had been named for a meeting by the Dean, Caroline had a smile on her face, “Go on, don’t keep the Dean and your coworkers waiting.”
Brooke pointed to her mother and Sophia, “No fighting in the hospital room, OK?”
Receiving no response, Brooke shook her head and headed out the door and up to the fourth floor.
“Knock knock ……”
Brooke knocked on the door to the conference room and pushed his way in.
However, as soon as he entered he froze; instead of the dean and his coworkers waiting for him, he was greeted by the two agents he had just met.
“What are you guys doing here?”
Luke smiled, “What a coincidence, we meet again.”
Brooke sighed softly, “If you’re here for Lawn’s diagnostic report, don’t bother, I’m not going to show it to you.
If you guys want to see the video will then go to my mom, she has the will and I don’t get to say anything.”
Luke asked rhetorically, “And is Lawn’s diagnostic report and medical records up to you?”
Brooke frowned and asked in a low voice, “What the hell do you mean?”
Luke threw a document onto the table, “Did you write it?”
Brooke picked up the document and checked it, revealing a shocked look, “How did the diagnostic report and medical records come to be in your hands, it’s illegal to peek at the diagnostic report and medical records without the patient’s and doctor’s permission!
Even if you guys are police officers you can’t do that.”
“We just received a police report from Dean Cook.
He found that Lawn’s injuries were problematic during his room check, and looking at the diagnostic reports speculated that Lawn may have suffered from electric shocks and abuse, and this situation is related to the case we are investigating, and we have accepted the case.
Brooke, as Lawn’s attending physician, why didn’t you choose to call the police?” Luke pulled the handcuffs out of his pocket and placed them on the table.
“If you can’t give a reasonable explanation, we’ll have to take you back to the police station.”
