The Lineage of Chen: From Shun to the Zhou Dynasty

Chen Hu, known as Hu Gong Man, is said to be a descendant of Emperor Shun of the Yu dynasty. In ancient times, when Shun was still a commoner, he married the two daughters of Yao and lived at Gui River. Later, taking his wife’s clan name, he was surnamed Gui. After Shun passed away, he passed the rule to Yu, and Shun’s son Shang Jun was given a fiefdom.

During the Xia Dynasty, these holdings were sometimes lost and sometimes restored. According to the commentary, during the Xia era, Yu Si and Yu Sui were enfeoffed as well.

When King Wu of the Zhou Dynasty overthrew King Zhou of the Shang Dynasty, he sought out the descendants of Shun once again. He found Gui Man and enfeoffed him in Chen. According to the Zuo Zhuan, “King Wu married his eldest daughter Tai Ji to Hu Gong of Yu and enfeoffed him in Chen to maintain the three respects.”

Upon Hu Gong’s death, his son Shen Gong Xi Hou succeeded him. After Shen Gong’s death, his younger brother Xiang Gong Gao Yang took over. After Xiang Gong’s death, Shen Gong’s son Tu became known as Xiao Gong. When Xiao Gong passed away, his son Shen Gong Yu Rong ascended to the throne. Shen Gong Yu Rong was alive during the reign of King Li of Zhou.

In the twelfth year of Yu Gong’s reign, King Li of Zhou fled to Zhi. In the twenty-third year, Yu Gong passed away, and his son Li Gong Xiao succeeded him. In the sixth year of Li Gong, King Xuan of Zhou ascended the throne. Thirty-six years later, Li Gong passed away, and his son Wu Gong Ling succeeded him. Wu Gong reigned for fifteen years before his son Yi Gong Shuo took over. In that year, King You of Zhou ascended the throne. Yi Gong passed away three years later, and his younger brother Ping Gong Xie succeeded him.

During Ping Gong’s seventh year, Duke Zhu of Lu first ascended to the throne. In his twenty-third year, Lu killed its lord Zhou Yu. In the thirty-third year, Lu assassinated its lord Yin Gong. In the thirty-eighth year, in the first month of Jiaxu and Jichou, Duke Huan of Lu passed away. Zhu, his mother’s son from Cai, colluded with Cai’s people to kill his father Wufu and the crown prince, then succeeded as Duke Huan. As he was reading the Spring and Autumn Annals, Qiao Zhou said, “It is said that Ta was once Wu Fu, the prime minister. Wu Fu was the prince’s successor. Tao Zheng was an official’s name. Sheng Man.”
