Xu Jia’s Suspicion and Van Shu’s Escape
Van Shu accompanied Xu Jia on a diplomatic mission to Qi. During their stay, Qi Xiang Wang, impressed by Van Shu’s eloquence, sent him gifts, which Shu refused to accept. Xu Jia, misinterpreting this as a sign of treachery, accused Shu of revealing Wei’s secrets to Qi. He reported Shu to Wei’s prime minister, Wei Qi, who ordered Shu’s brutal punishment. Shu was beaten, his ribs broken, and his teeth knocked out. Believing Shu to be dead, Wei Qi’s men rolled him in a mat and discarded him in a latrine, where drunk guards further humiliated him.
Feigning death, Shu persuaded a guard to help him escape in exchange for future rewards. The guard, seeing an opportunity for profit, smuggled Shu out of the latrine, allowing him to flee. Once Wei Qi discovered Shu had survived, he regretted his actions and sought to recapture him. However, with the help of his friend, Zheng Anping, Shu managed to escape to Qin, adopting the pseudonym Zhang Lu to avoid detection.
Van Shu’s Ascent in Qin
In Qin, Shu’s intelligence and oratory skills quickly attracted the attention of the powerful chancellor, Wang Ji. Disguised as a commoner, Shu met Wang Ji and impressed him with his insights into statecraft and strategy. Recognizing Shu’s potential, Wang Ji recommended him to Qin’s King Zhaoxiang.
