Chapter 79: The Mysterious Temple in the Slums
Ruyue woke up only now. After all, she was weak and needed to rest for a few days.
Our original plan was for Yue to follow Qin Huai back to China. After all, the main target of the four major powers is me, and it is most dangerous to follow me. Following Qin Huai, on the other hand, will make Yue safer because of Qin Huai’s identity.
But Yue refused this arrangement. She told Qin Huai that after this adventure had come to an end, whether or not they had found the person they were looking for, the first thing they would do when they returned would be to get married.
She told us not to leave her behind, and not to let her life have any regrets.
Faced with such a statement from Ru Yue, neither Qin Huai nor we could refuse. We had originally planned to leave for Raipur immediately, but in the end we decided to stay for a few days to let Ru Yue recuperate before setting off for Raipur.
Volma is a warm person. Seeing that we were going to stay here for a while, he couldn’t help but take us around. After all, we had come to a foreign country, and we always wanted to experience its customs.
Kolkata is beautiful, and although it also has the environmental problems that are unique to India, the ancient history of India has left a deep mark here. Whether it is architecture or culture, you can always feel the flavor of time, which is completely different from the feeling of China.
I have thought about it. Nowadays, when we walk down the streets of China, in cities that are all the same, how much of China’s history can we still experience? How much of the traces of China’s ancient times can we feel?
A week later, Ru Yue was recovering well under the best medical care. According to plan, we would leave for Raipur in three days.
Qin Huai had to leave, however, as he could not risk following us and had many things to do at home.
After saying goodbye to Qinhuai, we stayed in Kolkata for three more days. After Ruoyue was able to walk freely, we set off for Raipur with Walmar.
“I can’t leave you. You know how powerful the killer group is. If I’m not there, it will be difficult for you to reach Raipur safely.” This was the reason why Volma insisted on going with us. Although he didn’t know anything about Johnny in Raipur, we couldn’t refuse his reason.
With the help of Volma, we finally did not have to squeeze onto the deadly Indian trains, but could instead travel to Raipur in a comfortable car.
Since I was unfamiliar with the geography of India at first, I didn’t realize that Kolkata and Raipur were actually a long way apart. According to the road conditions in India, it would take about two days to drive there.
The journey was uneventful, just a non-stop drive, perhaps because of the company of Wal-Mart, no other incidents occurred.
It was only when we were a few dozen kilometers away from Raipur that my satellite phone, which had been quiet, rang again.
I thought it was Ge Quan, but I was surprised to find that it was Jenny calling again. This time, however, Jenny sounded very hurried. I didn’t even have a chance to speak, and all I heard was her saying that I should look for Johnny in Raipur, and that I should go to the temples in Raipur and look around. It would be best to go to every temple, and I would naturally find Johnny.
After that, Jenny hung up.
This left me a little confused. Most of the temples in India are crowded with people. How can I know who Johnny is? But no one gave me an answer. After I told everyone what Jenny said, everyone’s opinion was just to look for him!
Compared to Kolkata, Raipur is a much smaller city, but it is unusually clean compared to Kolkata.
After arriving in Raipur, we were taken directly to a private villa to rest and stay. Walma proudly announced to us that this was also his property.
Sure enough, Walma is a real local tyrant in India. We were amazed, but Xiao Daxia was calm about it, even a little disdainful. He started talking about the castle he owned in Europe, so I asked curiously, “What about the castle? You left your organization and mixed with us. Who helped you manage it?”
Xiao Shengqian was embarrassed and shrugged his shoulders, saying to me, “Those damn guys. After my grandfather left, they even started interfering with my property. But you can trust me, this is only temporary. I will find my grandfather and elders and take you to my castle to play.”
I understood Xiao Chengqian’s helplessness, and just smiled and ended the slightly awkward conversation with a sentence: “Actually, I think all castles are more or less the same. The Bamboo Grove is the best place.”
After resting at the Wal-Mart family villa in Raipur, we set out on the next day on a journey that required Johnny.
India is a country with many temples, and this is true of every city, including Raipur. Although there are only a few famous temples in the city, it would be a huge undertaking to find all the temples in the city, large and small.
Some temples are hidden in the countryside and may be as small as a single room, but people still go to worship there.
We started by looking for the famous temples, and then slowly infiltrated, but it wasn’t until three days later that we had searched through more than a dozen larger temples without any luck.
Due to the limited clues provided by Jenny, we sometimes had to act like idiots, and when we saw a “suspicious” person, we would ask, “Are you Johnny?” The answers we got were all disappointing. Some people even thought we were liars who were taking advantage of the opportunity to talk to them, and they were not friendly at all. If it weren’t for the existence of Wal-Mart, I think this journey to find Johnny would have been enough to make us drink a pot.
When disappointment becomes a habit, people become numb and continue to do things mechanically. I thought three days was a long time, but it turned out that those three days were just the beginning of a long period of bad luck. We were still looking for Johnny for more than half a month.
More and more people were asking about him, but none of them were Johnny, not even one with a similar name!
“The scope of Raipur is too large. Just like your country, China, a city also has its own counties and rural areas. If we still can’t find Raipur in the remaining slums, we’ll have to go deeper into those places.” Facing this disappointing search journey, Wal-Mart was the most disappointed one.
I don’t know what his master told him, but he always thought that following us would be full of legends, but in fact it was this boring search that made him feel like his dreams had been shattered.
The slums in India also showed me what shocking ‘dirty, messy and poor’ really means. People living here are like living in a garbage dump, ragged and dirty. Even the social order here has become blurred, like a paradise for criminals. I can hardly imagine that there would be temples here! I don’t know if Indian law allows temples to exist in such places.
But here, we really found a so-called temple. After receiving money from Wal-Mart, the people in the slum mysteriously told Wal-Mart that this strange temple had no popularity. In fact, it belonged to a pagan temple. If it weren’t for the fact that the owner of the temple was too mysterious and powerful, and the people around him were afraid to report it, it would have disappeared long ago.
When I heard this news, I had a strong feeling that the Johnny we were looking for might be in this temple!
So, for this piece of information, Wal-Mart paid more money to have the native of the slum take us to find this temple. After walking through a winding path that was more complicated than a Taoist formation, I deeply believed that Johnny had made the right decision. If we had been asked to find this low-slung tin house, this so-called temple, we would never have found it.
“This is it, but I dare not go in. The legend says that the terrible heretic is a black sorcerer from the West, who worships the real devil. I can only send you here.” Despite the winter, the temperature during the day is still scorching. Standing in the alley outside the few tin houses, with the stench of the sun in the air, the aboriginal said to us.
It seems that he has a deep fear of this tin house.
But it was precisely this fear that aroused Walma’s high interest. He even lost interest in scolding the Indian system for being dirty and messy, and happily took out a large amount of money and stuffed it into the aboriginal’s hand, excitedly saying, “Then leave. Remember that we are here to do research and don’t want any more rumors to spread. Do you understand?”
“I understand!” After receiving the money, the aborigine immediately left. If his IQ was normal, he wouldn’t have leaked anything.
I didn’t expect that some of the idiots in the group would be so smart.
The sound of knocking on the door soon rang out outside the tin shack. It was naturally the self-appointed Wal-Mart who was knocking, but after a minute there was no response from inside.
Wal-Mart continued knocking for another half minute, and it was only then that the door to the tin shack opened, or rather, it opened very quickly and then closed again. A bottle of liquor flew out of the shack and landed precisely in Wal-Mart’s arms.
“If you want to see me, then please bring this brand of wine. Remember, I only want this brand! Otherwise, you can just get lost!” A slightly irritated male voice came from inside the house. The voice was not old, but it had some vicissitudes of life.
And Volma picked up the bottle, a little confused for a moment. Only I could clearly see that it was a bottle of Wuliangye!
