Why Consistency in Virtue Matters: Lessons from Confucius
The Master said, “There is a saying in the South that ‘A man without constancy cannot be a shaman or a doctor.’ How true!” “He who does not constancy his virtue will be ashamed of it.” (2) The Master said, “It is enough to say that it is not constant.”
[Notes] (1) Wuzhe: a person who uses divination to treat people. (2) Not constant in his virtue, or he will be ashamed: these two sentences are quoted from the “Yijing” (Book of Changes). (3) Zhan: to divinate.
[Translation] Confucius said, “There is a saying among the people of the south: ‘If a person does not have perseverance in his work, he cannot be a witch doctor. “If a person cannot maintain his virtue for a long time, he will inevitably suffer shame.” Confucius said, ‘(This saying means that a person who is not persistent) does not need to consult the oracles.’
[Commentary] In this chapter, Confucius taught two things: First, a person must be persistent in order to achieve success. Second, a person must maintain his virtue for a long time, otherwise he may suffer shame. This is his own requirement and also a warning to his students.
Confucius, the revered Chinese philosopher, offers timeless wisdom in his teachings that transcends cultural boundaries. One profound lesson can be found in a short yet insightful passage: “The people of the South have a saying: ‘A person who lacks consistency cannot be a shaman or healer.’ How true this is!” He then elaborates, “If a person cannot consistently uphold their virtue, they are bound to face disgrace.” This remark implies that individuals who lack persistence and dedication in their moral conduct will ultimately suffer shame and failure.
The Importance of Consistency
Confucius emphasizes the critical nature of consistency in personal and professional life. The saying from the South, which he praises, highlights that only those who are steadfast and reliable can excel in roles that require trust and commitment, such as a shaman or healer. These roles, which involve guiding and helping others, demand unwavering consistency. If one’s actions are erratic or unreliable, they undermine their credibility and effectiveness.
In a broader sense, this teaching underlines the importance of consistency in all endeavors. Whether one is striving for personal growth, professional success, or simply fulfilling daily responsibilities, a lack of consistency can hinder progress and lead to failure. The ability to maintain a steady course, despite challenges, is crucial for achieving lasting success.
Virtue and Its Role in Personal Integrity
Confucius also touches upon the role of virtue in maintaining one’s integrity. He warns that failing to uphold one’s virtues consistently will result in disgrace. This part of the teaching reflects the idea that integrity is not just a fleeting quality but a sustained practice. A person who occasionally exhibits moral behavior but fails to do so consistently will not gain the respect and trust of others.
This principle is applicable not only in the context of ancient Chinese practices but also in modern life. Personal integrity and ethical behavior are foundational to building strong relationships and a reputable character. When individuals commit to upholding their values, even when it is challenging, they earn respect and build a solid foundation for success.
Application in Modern Context
In today’s fast-paced world, where quick results and transient successes often overshadow long-term goals, Confucius’s teachings remind us of the value of consistency. For professionals, this might mean maintaining a high standard of work ethics and reliability. For students, it could involve persistent effort in their studies and personal development. For anyone striving for personal growth, it entails staying true to one’s values and goals, regardless of the obstacles faced.
In summary, Confucius’s insights on consistency and virtue offer a powerful lesson: success and respect are earned through unwavering dedication and integrity. By committing to consistent practice in our moral conduct and professional endeavors, we align ourselves with timeless principles that guide us toward lasting achievement and respect.
