Echoes of Patriotic Sorrow: A Reflection on History and Longing in Song China
Text:
In the serene nights of ancient Yizhen, now present-day Yizheng County in Jiangsu along the northern banks of the Yangtze River during the Southern Song Dynasty, one could feel the weight of history in every gust of wind and ripple of water. It was a land marked by repeated incursions from the Jin invaders, a place where the hopes of many were dashed against the cold reality of foreign domination.
The phrase “草草兴亡” lingers in the air, a poignant reflection on the swift rise and fall of fortunes in the Central Plains, a land of haste and loss. The term “盈掬,” used to describe eyes brimming with tears, captures the sorrow that permeated those troubled times.
First Stanza:
Night settles over the cold banks of the Yangtze,
Where I stay, pondering in the chilling river’s embrace,
My thoughts tumultuous, I can’t help but raise my voice to the heavens.
This roar stirs colossal waves, winds swirling,
Raising the river waters high, high enough to overturn riverside homes.
Even the mythical creatures beneath the waves stir in fear.
Second Stanza:
The poetic musings hidden within me are awakened,
Verses recited, yet never enough.
Drinking intermittently, trying to dull the lingering ache,
But the burdens in my heart cannot be easily dispelled.
Don’t ask why a nation’s rise and fall can change in a moment,
Though my ambitions are grand, they remain unrealized,
Leaving me to shed tears of sorrow.
The greatest misfortune in life is to possess talent for the world, yet nowhere to deploy it. During the Southern Song period, many idealists lamented their white hair and unfulfilled ambitions. This poem expresses their sentiment, with Yizhen, now Yizheng County in Jiangsu Province, situated on the northern banks of the Yangtze River, once a frequent target of Jin aggression. The author, patriotic and with a global outlook, spent a night here, facing the cold river, looking north to the Central Plains, overwhelmed with emotions. Using the river landscape to express his frustration and sorrow over unfulfilled ambitions.
“Night lodgings by the Yangtze, a long roar over the river’s melody.”
With just one word, “roar,” it portrays a lofty realm and an imposing atmosphere. At night, facing the bleak river, the author stood by the river, thoughts surging. Unable to sleep despite exhaustion, his heart was full of pent-up sorrow and resentment. Unable to vent his grievances, he could only howl at the river, seeking temporary psychological balance through unconventional outbursts. A single “roar” vividly suggests the author’s frustrations, unfulfilled heroism, and the lack of opportunities. This “cultural eye” is the concentrated expression of the emotional tone of the entire poem, also the overall landscape written by this “roar” word.
“Underwater fish and dragons startled, wind swirling the earth, waves turning over houses.”
“Frightened” is the response to “roar”, which is a very deep and strong writing. At night, it was a time for fish and all kinds of aquatic animals to sleep. But suddenly, they heard a loud roar and jumped up and were scared. Even fish and dragons hiding in the river bottom are no exception, so the river stirs up huge waves, and the waves are like flying, and the atmosphere is unique. This vivid, heart-wrenching picture vividly shows the author’s sorrow and dissatisfaction. Sound, image, and feeling three-dimensional, hearing, touch, and vision are combined, colorful, and majestic, with the power of thunder and the momentum of overwhelming the sea.
The next section changes the image of lyrical expression to express deep emotions directly. The emotional tone changed from anger to sadness, showing a strong sense of tragedy consciousness. “The poetry has not yet been enough, and the wine has broken and continued.” These two sentences not only have a deep and rich ideological connotation, but also show the author’s emotional trajectory in this situation. However, now that the northern Jin Dynasty still remains unchanging, his strategy for pacifying the northern frontier has not been recognized by the current rulers. Heroes are lost, there is no way to do so, and years are inevitable, and fame is difficult to achieve. Looking back on the past, the mood is like the surging and rolling of the river. Therefore, he drank for a while and drank again, with no way to go, no way to go, and the years of sorrow.
“Quick success and rapid decline, don’t ask for fame, tears are about to fill up.”
It is a lament for the Southern Song’s sorrow and for its own sorrow. The king of a generation is so ashamed of being in the left bank of the river that he built and died in this way of peace, giving cowardly and weak, never giving up, and leaving the pages in such a social tragedy and historical tragedy. Don’t think about personal fame in this situation. However, this word has not been opened, and it has already been filled with tears. Here, the poet connects the fate of individuals with the fate of the country, and sees the constraints of national destiny on individual fate, seeing the helplessness of small people to change the image of the country, and seeing the helplessness of getting rid of their own tragedies. The recognition of the tragic cause of life is the deep reason for “Tears of Sorrow”.
Although this article is short and small, it is rich in content, rich in rhyme, undulating, and full of changes. It’s full of sorrow, broad and vigorous.
