Chapter 206: Avenging My Brother (Part 3)
Seeing the police closing in, the young man panicked even more. He pushed through the crowd, trying to leave. Chen Shi placed a hand on his shoulder and asked, “Where are you going?”
“To the bathroom.”
“Security check first, then you can go.”
“You control everything but can’t control when I need to use the bathroom? Do I have any human rights?” the young man retorted, glaring.
With a “beep,” the young man was stunned. He looked down to see a metal detector pressed against his abdomen. It was held by Peng Sijue, who had borrowed it.
Chen Shi smirked, “What are you hiding? Take off your coat.”
The young man’s face turned pale, his lips trembling. He said nothing.
They led him to the side, and under Chen Shi’s insistence, he reluctantly took off his coat. Peng Sijue scanned him again, and the metal detector still reacted at his abdomen.
“Please take off your sweater as well.”
Biting his lip, the young man removed his sweater. As Peng Sijue prepared to scan him again, the young man grabbed his wrist and pleaded, “Give me some dignity. I confess. I did it!”
“What’s your name?”
“Li Weiting.”
Chen Shi glanced at the list. Li had dodged questioning twice. Smart kid, he thought.
“Let’s talk somewhere else.”
They moved to an empty VIP lounge overlooking the boarding area. Li Weiting looked down at the crowd and sighed, “I thought I could get on that plane with them.”
Facing him were Lin Qiupu and Chen Shi, while the others waited outside.
Lin Qiupu asked, “Did you kill him?”
Li Weiting lowered his head and nodded.
“Why?”
“Maybe it was fate.”
“So, sitting here is also fate. Stop beating around the bush.”
“I knew him. He was the one who caused my brother’s death. A few years ago, my brother bought insurance from his company. When my brother was diagnosed with cancer, the insurance company refused to pay, citing various reasons. This old man was the one playing word games in my brother’s hospital room. I was so angry I hit him with an ashtray. That impulsive act cost us the lawsuit. My brother didn’t get a penny…”
“My brother later committed suicide in despair, leaving behind his wife and child. She had no job and was heavily in debt, forced to take odd jobs. I often helped out financially.
“This time, I went to Jinan to visit them. I didn’t expect to see that bastard on the plane! Look at his watch, his phone, and the multi-million-dollar deals he discussed. It was all bought with the blood of people like my brother! I seemed to hear my brother’s voice telling me to kill that old man, to avenge him. So I did…”
“How did you come up with such a unique way?” Chen Shi pulled out the foil-wrapped knife he had made.
“How did I think of it?” Li Weiting sneered. “My brother committed suicide this way. In the ICU, he didn’t want to burden the family, so he folded a knife from the lunch foil and slit his throat.”
“It should be stabbed, right?”
“Yes. When I stabbed that old bastard in the throat, he didn’t even make a sound. I have no regrets. It’s karma. Even if I didn’t do it, someone else would have eventually.”
“Do you really think this is justice?” Lin Qiupu couldn’t bear to listen any longer.
Chen Shi focused on the case, “Is the weapon in your stomach?”
“Yes,” Li Weiting admitted. “I thought the body would only be discovered when we reached Jinan, but the plane made an emergency landing. I couldn’t dispose of the weapon, so I swallowed it… How did you know? Did someone see?”
“No one saw. It’s called deduction,” Chen Shi replied.
Li Weiting looked at Chen Shi in amazement, “You’re impressive. Respect!”
“One detail: you swapped your trash bag with someone else’s?”
“Yes, I exchanged it with the person next to me. When you were questioning people earlier, I was relieved that the police hadn’t noticed me… But I was too naive. I didn’t expect you to have a backup plan.”
Lin Qiupu and Chen Shi exchanged glances, knowing the truth was now clear.
Chen Shi asked, “Anything else to say?”
“I still don’t regret it. But… Can I sell my house and give all my savings to my sister-in-law and nephew after I go to prison?”
“You’re kind-hearted. Don’t worry, we’ll inform the prosecution office,” Chen Shi reassured him.
“Thank you, thank you!” Tears welled up in Li Weiting’s eyes.
Lin Qiupu took the handcuffed suspect out and handed him over to a squad leader. It was exactly three o’clock, and a plane was taking off outside the window.
“A new record!” Lin Qiupu said with a relieved smile.
“It’s thanks to your leadership,” Chen Shi said modestly.
After the suspect was taken away, Lao Geng was extremely excited. He shook Lin Qiupu’s hand and said, “Your team is amazing. Solving the case in six hours! No wonder the chief gave you this case.”
“It wasn’t just my effort,” Lin Qiupu glanced at Chen Shi, who shook his head slightly, not wanting to draw attention. Lin Qiupu corrected, “It was a team effort.”
“Lin, I owe you one. If you need anything, just ask!”
“Don’t mention it!”
With the case closed, everyone felt relieved. Xu Xiaodong asked, “Captain, can we leave early today? We deserve a break.”
“It’s not the end of the workday yet. Back to work!”
Groans filled the room. Lin Qiupu beckoned Chen Shi over, “Dongxue fainted today. Give her sick leave. Take her home to rest and tell her not to stay up late.”
“Why don’t you do it yourself?”
“I… I’ll pay your fare!”
“Double!”
“Extortion! Fine, fine!”
While everyone else continued working, Lin Dongxue was already in Chen Shi’s car. Looking at the warm sunlight outside, she said, “I just realized tomorrow is the weekend. Haha, I can sleep in!”
“Little Lin, want me to buy you some supplements?”
Lin Dongxue blushed, “I’ll buy them myself! By the way, since we’re off early today, I’ll visit the agency to look for a reliable place to stay.”
“Forget it today. Rest well. I’ll go with you tomorrow, and we’ll move the day after.”
Lin Dongxue thought about it and, once again defeated by laziness, said, “Alright.”
That night, Lin Dongxue slept until nine the next morning. She woke up to a delicious smell. In the living room, Chen Shi and Tao Yueyue were experimenting with a new soymilk machine. The scent of red date soymilk filled the house.
Lin Dongxue’s heart pounded with emotion, “Did you… Did you buy this just for me?”
“Don’t flatter yourself. I wanted soymilk.”
“You’re so insincere!” Lin Dongxue laughed. After enjoying the delicious and sweet red date soymilk, she resolutely said, “Today, I’m going to look for a place. I aim to move tomorrow… This time, I mean it!”
Tao Yueyue asked, “Sister Lin, why do you keep wanting to move? Isn’t living here good?”
“Maybe it’s her way of comforting herself,” Chen Shi interjected.
“You really have a way with words!” Lin Dongxue said to Tao Yueyue, “Your Uncle Chen and I aren’t like that. It wouldn’t sound good if people talked. You’ll understand when you’re older.”
Tao Yueyue stuck out her tongue, “I don’t need to grow up to understand. You two might as well be like that.”
Lin Dongxue blushed. Unexpectedly, Chen Shi reacted more dramatically, spitting out his soymilk. As he wiped it up, he said, “Kids shouldn’t talk nonsense!”
