Chapter 265: The Obsessed Man

Luo Haifeng was startled by Lin Dongxue’s sudden outburst, frantically signaling her to calm down.

The man inside the apartment sneered, “Calling me a scumbag?! Do you even know what she did? She went to a hotel with some random guy. I cared so much about her, and she willingly slept with another man. Just thinking about her being with someone else drives me crazy!”

“That’s her freedom!” Lin Dongxue retorted angrily. “Before marriage, she can sleep with whoever she wants!”

“It’s because of women like you that society is so corrupt. With your loose morals, your future husband will surely wear a green hat. I pity him already!”

Lin Dongxue was so furious she almost wished she had her gun to shoot through the door.

Luo Haifeng quickly tried to diffuse the situation, saying to the man inside, “Mr. Ma, please refrain from personal attacks. We’re here to mediate your dispute.”

“Mediate? Screw that! Did I invite you here? With all the murders and arson happening, you come to bother a law-abiding citizen like me? Just the other day, there was a big scandal about a pharmaceutical company using harmful ingredients, harming countless people, and you’re here dealing with me?”

“Could you please be polite and open the door so we can talk properly?”

Lin Dongxue kicked the door, “Hiding behind a security door pretending to be tough?”

The man inside laughed coldly, “It’s not that I won’t open the door. She has a key too. Let her come in herself!”

“What are you planning to do if you open the door?” Lin Dongxue demanded.

“I’ll kill her, then kill myself. I’ve already sharpened the knife.”

“I’m warning you, I’m a criminal police officer!”

“Criminal police? I’m so scared. You’re going to arrest me even though I haven’t killed anyone yet?” The man’s deranged laughter echoed through the door.

Lin Dongxue clenched her fists in anger. Luo Haifeng quickly pulled her aside to cool down. Realizing her outburst, Lin Dongxue said, “Sorry, I just can’t stand guys like him.”

“I understand. Maybe the way criminal police handle things is different from us regular police. He’s not a criminal, just a citizen. Mediation, remember?”

“Okay, I won’t say anything more.”

Lin Dongxue glanced at the barred window, wishing the man inside would die in some accident, like a gas leak.

Luo Haifeng approached Miss Dong again, “Do you have the key?”

Miss Dong shook her head frantically, “No, I don’t want to go in. I don’t want to see him. Just get my cat out, and I’ll leave. I don’t want the house or the furniture! Can’t you get some SWAT officers to break the door down?”

“This isn’t a criminal case, so the SWAT team won’t come. Give me the key, and I’ll talk to him.”

“No, no, no!”

Her mother interjected, “Just give the key to the police officer. You don’t have to go in.”

“I’m scared he’ll know I’m here!” Miss Dong cried, covering her face.

“Don’t worry, sister,” Lin Dongxue said, patting her shoulder. “This isn’t your fault. It’s better to end things with such an obsessive man sooner rather than later. You’d only suffer more with him.”

Touched by Lin Dongxue’s words, Miss Dong burst into tears and hugged her. Lin Dongxue gently patted her back.

“Hey, officer, why are you instigating my daughter?” her mother said. “They say it’s better to destroy ten temples than break up one marriage. Couples can work out their issues. It’s not a big deal.”

Miss Dong screamed, “If you think that way, why don’t you marry him?”

“Don’t talk nonsense!” her mother scolded. “All couples fight.”

“Just like you and Dad, for decades!”

“We still made it through, didn’t we? From my experience, this is nothing. People would laugh if they knew you’re making such a fuss over a cat. We haven’t even had dinner yet, and we’re here dealing with your nonsense. Be grateful!”

“I didn’t ask you to come. Just leave!”

Her father said, “Enough already.”

Her mother persisted, “I’m her mother. Why shouldn’t I speak? Give me the key. I’ll go in and talk to him.”

She reached for her daughter’s bag, but Miss Dong shielded it with her body, crying, “No! I’d rather swallow the key than give it to you! Stay out of my business!”

“Give it here! Why are you so stubborn?” her mother insisted.

Lin Dongxue slapped her hand away, “What are you doing? Robbing your daughter in front of the police?”

“How dare you speak to me like that? She’s my daughter. It’s none of your business!” her mother snapped, clearly agitated.

“I think there’s a problem with your family dynamics.”

“Are you even a police officer? How can you say that? I’ll report you!”

“Go ahead,” Lin Dongxue said, standing protectively in front of Miss Dong.

Luo Haifeng tried to mediate, “Ma’am, don’t get angry. She’s not from our station.”

“Then why is she here meddling?” her mother shouted.

“Because I want to!” Lin Dongxue asserted.

Fuming, the mother directed her anger at her daughter, “This is all your fault. You’re the one who started this by cheating. In any family, that’s a big deal. Killing the cat or even you wouldn’t be surprising. How did I raise such a daughter!”

“Enough!” her father yelled.

Her mother stormed off. Luo Haifeng moved to follow, but her father said, “Let her go! I’ve never seen such a mother.” He then lit a cigarette.

Listening to Miss Dong’s sobs, Lin Dongxue thought, This family has serious issues.

“I’ll try talking to the guy again. You stay with Miss Dong,” Luo Haifeng said.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t be more help,” Lin Dongxue apologized.

“No, no, you’ve been a great help just by being here.”

Lin Dongxue asked Miss Dong if she was hungry. She nodded, so Lin Dongxue took her to get something to eat. They chose a Japanese restaurant.

Inside, the decor was quite refreshing. Miss Dong ordered sushi. Lin Dongxue noticed a particularly strong-looking female server and couldn’t help but stare.

“Officer, I swear I didn’t cheat!” Miss Dong said, still sniffling.

“That’s not the main point,” Lin Dongxue reassured her.

“No, really, I didn’t cheat. I think he put a tracker in my clothes because he always knew where I was. It drove me crazy, so one night I turned off my phone and stayed at a hotel to get back at him. He showed up, and if he didn’t put a tracker, how did he know? Luckily, the hotel security stopped him. I heard him shouting like a madman outside. It felt so good!”
