Chapter 297: A Brave Fight Against the Real Culprit
After the shift change, Chen Shi and Lin Dongxue finally drove home. Lin Dongxue, exhausted and yawning, said, “Before dawn, I was thinking about having beef noodles for breakfast, but now I have no appetite at all. I just want to sleep. The old saying ‘A whole pig’s worth of food can’t compare to a good night’s sleep’ is really true.”
“Now that you mention it, I kind of want beef noodles too.”
“No way, let’s just go home and sleep. I don’t want to eat anything right now…” Lin Dongxue’s phone rang, and her expression changed dramatically as she answered, “What!?”
“What happened?”
“Sun Shu was poisoned! They’re rushing him to the hospital…”
Chen Shi immediately made a sharp turn towards the hospital. Suddenly, a truck drove against the flow of traffic straight at them. In the driver’s seat sat a pale-faced young man with a twisted smile.
Instinctively, Chen Shi swerved left but remembered Lin Dongxue was in the passenger seat and turned hard to the right. It was too late. The truck crashed into their car with a thunderous boom, shattering the windows. The airbags deployed, cushioning their heads.
The car skidded across the road, finally coming to a halt against a barrier. Chen Shi felt his head buzzing like a swarm of bees. He looked up to see Lin Dongxue’s face buried in the airbag, unconscious.
“Winter Snow! Winter Snow!”
Chen Shi checked her pulse; she was only unconscious but otherwise stable. The truck blocked the road, halting all traffic. Wang Sunxu jumped out of the truck, playing with a butterfly knife as he walked towards them.
So, the last target was indeed me!
Chen Shi gritted his teeth, pulled the gun from Lin Dongxue’s waist, grabbed the handcuffs, and kicked open the deformed car door. He pointed the gun at Wang Sunxu.
Wang Sunxu was surprised to see the gun but still smiled, raising his hands. “Would you dare to shoot, Officer Song?”
Chen Shi’s hands trembled, unable to aim steadily. The events from three years ago haunted him.
Realizing this, Wang Sunxu advanced boldly. Chen Shi, determined, emptied the magazine into the sky, the gunshots echoing for miles. He threw the empty gun aside and clenched his fists, taking a fighting stance.
“Brave move!”
Wang Sunxu charged, flipping the knife and aiming for Chen Shi’s chest. Chen Shi focused on the knife, grabbed Wang Sunxu’s wrist, and punched him in the chest.
Wang Sunxu slashed Chen Shi’s hand, forcing him to retreat. Chen Shi seized an opportunity, kicking Wang Sunxu to the ground. But Wang Sunxu stabbed Chen Shi’s leg, causing intense pain. Chen Shi kicked him away, creating distance.
Wang Sunxu stood, pulling out a second butterfly knife, twirling them menacingly.
Fighting an armed opponent bare-handed was difficult. Chen Shi’s skills were above average but far from elite. He realized that defeating Wang Sunxu was unrealistic; surviving was the priority.
He needed to buy time!
“How did you poison Sun Shu? We checked everything he ate and drank. How did you do it?”
Criminals often enjoyed boasting about their schemes. Wang Sunxu laughed, “In the medicine.”
“I personally checked the medicine.”
“It was in the capsules. I knew you’d check, so I taped a lethal dose inside the capsules. You couldn’t find it.”
“Delayed poisoning, smart! But why didn’t you act earlier if you’d been to Sun Shu’s place?”
“If I acted earlier, you’d all focus on me. I wouldn’t be able to kill you. You’re the last one. After you die, it doesn’t matter if I’m caught or killed.”
“Do you think Wang Sunlei would be happy seeing you like this?”
“Don’t you dare mention his name!” Wang Sunxu roared, “You ruined him and destroyed my life. You turned me into a monster. Now it’s time for you to pay!”
“We ruined your life? Your brother did that with his foolish poisoning plot. He ruined both your lives!”
“You bastard cops! Do you know what kind of childhood I had?” Wang Sunxu snarled.
“I know! A childhood worse than a dog’s!”
“All because of you! You caused all of this!”
Chen Shi laughed coldly, then more heartily.
“Why are you laughing!?” Wang Sunxu demanded.
“Life isn’t fair. Many have it worse than you, but they don’t kill. You chose this path. You became scum and blame it on your tragic childhood. You’re not even a competent scum. Killing gives you a false sense of power. Those you killed feared you but didn’t respect you. You’re a coward defeated by fate, a mad dog biting others without anyone’s respect. No one will remember you!”
Wang Sunxu clenched his fists, teeth grinding. “Enough talk, die, Song Lang!”
Distant sirens blared. Chen Shi prayed for a few more seconds, just a few more!
He threw his coat at Wang Sunxu and kicked him. Wang Sunxu fell, but police cars surrounded him. Officers drew their guns, shouting, “Freeze!”
Wang Sunxu, enraged, charged at Chen Shi again. A side officer shot his leg, and Wang Sunxu fell.
Chen Shi approached, kicked away the knives, and cuffed Wang Sunxu’s hands behind his back.
“Don’t move!” the police shouted.
“I’m on your side!” Chen Shi said.
He whispered to Wang Sunxu, “You won. I know you’ll reveal my identity. Do it. I’m tired of lying. I’m done running. I’ll go to hell with you!”
Wang Sunxu glared with one eye, nostrils flaring, breathing heavily.
Once the police took over, Chen Shi checked on Lin Dongxue. Half an hour later, she was in the hospital. The doctor said she had a mild concussion and needed rest.
Watching her with an oxygen mask, Chen Shi felt heartbroken. This might be the last time he saw her.
He regretted not having the chance to say a proper goodbye.
