Chapter 307: Visiting Old Man Lu Again

“How do you conduct a paternity test?” Xu Xiaodong asked, confused. “Can’t you just take the blood to a hospital?”

“Idiot, hospitals don’t let you bring your own blood for a paternity test. They draw it on-site,” Chen Shi explained. “There’s no way X could impersonate Wang Haitao through that process. He can’t swap his own blood for Wang Haitao’s blood.”

“Swap his own blood for Wang Haitao’s blood?” Chen Shi muttered, deep in thought.

“Hey, did you think of something?” Lin Dongxue asked.

“No, no,” Chen Shi smiled. “By the way, now that we know the killer’s motive, I’ll go see Old Man Lu tomorrow and find out if he recently acknowledged any sons.”

“Why not go today?” Lin Dongxue asked.

Chen Shi glanced at his watch, “It’s too late today. Let’s head back to the station and wrap up. You should get some rest too, you’ve just recovered.”

Lin Dongxue brushed her hair aside and said, “I’ve been fine for a while now.”

Lin Dongxue had been hospitalized for a few days after getting hit by a car. Lin Qiupu had almost strangled Chen Shi in anger back then, but that was in the past. Wang Sunxu was likely introducing himself to his cellmates in the detention center, and Chen Shi wasn’t worried about Lin Dongxue’s safety anymore.

The four returned to the station. After checking in, Chen Shi dropped Lin Dongxue off at home and took Wang Haitao back to his place.

Wang Haitao had grown comfortable in Chen Shi’s home. As soon as they walked in, he yelled, “Serve dinner, serve dinner.”

Chen Shi made him a bowl of noodles, which Wang Haitao slurped down noisily. Chen Shi sat across from him and asked, “Want to meet your father tomorrow?”

Wang Haitao froze for a moment, then shook his head vehemently, “No, no, I’m afraid General Wang will harm me.”

“Didn’t you mention you have a token on you? Give it to me, and I’ll use it to gain your father’s trust and expose General Wang’s plot.”

Wang Haitao patted himself down and said, “Lost it!”

Great, looks like I’ll just have to use my charm tomorrow, thought Chen Shi. He really wasn’t looking forward to seeing Old Man Lu.

The next morning, during the case briefing, Lin Qiupu shared the latest findings. Based on a tip, they had located an underground fencing operation. After a tense standoff that nearly turned into a shootout, they managed to apprehend the suspects.

All the stolen jewelry from the heist had been recovered. The fence revealed that the couple, who had committed the robbery, had sold the jewelry to them on April 26, when the robbery was still fresh news. The fence had bargained hard and bought the lot for just over ten thousand.

April 26 was also the day Wang Haitao had escaped. The case was becoming clearer. Wang Haitao had slipped away while the couple was out fencing the stolen goods.

Thus, the robbery case was effectively closed, and the focus shifted to the couple’s murders. However, there was no information about X from their criminal records, and X’s DNA didn’t match any known felons.

Chen Shi raised his hand, “I have some findings too.”

After explaining his side of the investigation, everyone was shocked. They began discussing, “Impersonation? That’s bold!”, “How did he plan to fake the paternity test?”, “Even if he killed his accomplices, there’s still Wang Haitao.”

Chen Shi speculated, “I think Wang Haitao’s mental state deteriorated during his captivity. I don’t know how far X’s impersonation plan went, but after becoming Old Man Lu’s son, he would definitely try to eliminate Wang Haitao as a loose end.”

Lin Qiupu said, “Then we need to hurry and see Lu Qixing.”

Chen Shi suggested, “I think we should avoid alerting him. This man is a killer. If he takes hostages, it’ll be a mess. Let me go first. I’m not a cop, and I know Old Man Lu.”

“Okay, but I’m sending Xu Xiaodong with you,” Lin Qiupu decided.

“Thanks, but I’ll take Dongxue with me,” Chen Shi replied.

Lin Qiupu glared at Chen Shi’s shamelessness but nodded, “Be careful. We know where the suspect is, so there’s no rush.”

“And one more thing,” Lin Qiupu pointed at Chen Shi, “Don’t mess up and drag Old Man Lu to the station.”

“Unless he breaks the law,” Chen Shi replied confidently.

After the meeting, Chen Shi and Lin Dongxue headed to the hotel where Old Man Lu was staying, only to be told that he no longer stayed there.

“Where is he staying now?” Chen Shi asked.

“The CEO’s private residence. We can’t disclose that,” the polite hotel manager replied.

After hitting a dead end, they left the hotel. Chen Shi searched his phone and said, “Since the last case, Old Man Lu has kept a low profile. He doesn’t even participate in charity events anymore. I heard he handed over his company and plans to retire.”

“After losing two sons, it’s a big blow. Maybe he remembered an illegitimate child from his youth and brought him here, only to have this happen,” Lin Dongxue speculated.

“Maybe it’s just that big trees attract the wind… Anyway, help me find out where he lives now,” Chen Shi asked.

Lin Dongxue made a call and found out that Lu Qixing had ten properties in Long’an. They marveled at the wealth. Chen Shi studied the map on his phone for a while and drove to one of the addresses.

Lin Dongxue asked curiously, “How do you know he’s here?”

“Just a hunch… It’s hard to explain.”

Arriving at the villa in the city, they found the gate locked. Lin Dongxue teased, “Your hunch was wrong?”

“This place is closest to his company. Knowing his nature, he wouldn’t easily let go of his company. Seems like I was wrong… He must really want to retire in peace.”

“Losing two sons changes a person.”

They drove out of the neighborhood and encountered a truck. Chen Shi suddenly turned around to follow it. Lin Dongxue asked, “What are you doing?”

“That’s a truck from his company. They wouldn’t send it here if no one lived here. Let’s follow it.”

The truck stopped at the villa. A glamorous woman in silk pajamas came out to direct the workers unloading items. Chen Shi ogled her curvy figure until he noticed Lin Dongxue’s disapproving look and quickly said, “She looks like a vixen. She’s not half as good as you. Obviously not a decent woman.”

“Is that what you really think?” Lin Dongxue laughed.

The workers were mostly unloading frozen food. Chen Shi thought, rich people even stock up so lavishly. The woman yawned and told the workers, “Hurry up. The kitchen’s waiting. The old man’s got guests tonight. When will we get to eat at this rate?”

Hearing this, Chen Shi saw an opportunity and approached her, “Hi, we’re here to see Lu Qixing.”

“Who are you?” the glamorous woman asked, eyeing Chen Shi up and down.

“Tell him my name is Chen Shi. He’ll remember.”

“Hmph, another one coming to ask for favors, huh? I’ll go tell him.”
