Chapter 332: The Expert of Getting Away with Crime
Upon hearing that a suspicious person had been caught, Lin Qiupu and Lin Dongxue immediately rushed down. The suspect was a skinny middle-aged man, carrying a briefcase and wearing glasses. His hair was neatly combed, with some strands of gray indicating he was around forty or fifty years old. He was arguing with the police officer who stopped him, “I’m not a suspect. I’m a lawyer here to see Mr. Zheng. I’m sorry about the murder, but As you can see, I just arrived and can’t be a suspect, so let’s not waste time.”
Lawyer Bai was indeed eloquent, but Lin Qiupu wasn’t ready to let him go just yet. “Mr. Zheng has already retired. What kind of business could you still have with him?”
“That’s confidential, client privilege. I can’t disclose it.”
“He’s been murdered. I need to know everything about him, especially any disputes he was involved in.”
Lawyer Bai shook his head with a smile. “I’m sorry, but I can’t help you with that.”
Lin Dongxue took his business card and quickly looked him up on her phone. The results surprised her. Lawyer Bai wasn’t an economic lawyer; he specialized in a particular type of defense and was quite well-known in that field.
Lin Dongxue quietly called out, “Captain Lin,” and showed her phone to Lin Qiupu, who was equally surprised. He looked at the information on the screen, then back at Lawyer Bai. “Lying to the police is not a good habit.”
Lawyer Bai seemed to understand something but remained calm. “I meant no harm, only to protect the deceased’s reputation. Respect for the dead, you know.”
“Thanks for your kindness… You specialize in defending those accused of rape, right?”
Realizing he couldn’t hide it, Bai admitted, “Yes.”
“According to the internet, you’ve defended over a thousand rape cases and helped hundreds of clients get off. It seems you’re quite an expert in this field… But it looks like you’re not very popular online.”
“People will talk. In this line of work, I don’t mind being cursed at. As for my motives, I admit it’s for the money. Those accused of sexual assault or rape are often wealthy, and I get a good fee. Plus, it’s not as if I’m doing anything illegal.”
Lin Dongxue was shocked by his shamelessness. The online reviews about him were extremely negative. He often used tactics like twisting facts and fabricating evidence to portray rape victims as prostitutes, sluts, fraudsters, or sufferers of sleep sex syndrome. Yet, he claimed it wasn’t immoral?
Trying to stay composed in front of Lin Qiupu, she couldn’t hide the contempt in her eyes when looking at Lawyer Bai.
Bai, who was used to such looks, smiled slightly. Lin Qiupu asked, “Why are you so candid with me? Is it because you’re preparing for what comes next? Did Zheng Guohao recently hire you to get him out of a rape charge?”
“……”
“Is the trouble Zheng Guohao caused already heading to court?”
“……”
“If you don’t talk, we can take this elsewhere.”
Realizing he couldn’t hide it any longer, Bai suggested, “Let’s go somewhere else. Standing here is tiring. How about a nearby café, my treat?”
“Right here!” Lin Qiupu said firmly. “The victim is still upstairs. I have no mood for a café.”
“You’re very dedicated, Captain Lin,” Bai said with a forced smile. “Actually, Zheng Guohao planned to sue someone else.”
“Who?”
“A man named Li Min, for extortion.”
“That’s not your usual specialty.”
“No, but…” Bai spoke slowly, “There were other matters involved. A month ago, Zheng Guohao sexually assaulted Li Min’s underage daughter. Li Min was furious and wanted to kill him. In desperation, Zheng Guohao agreed to pay one million in compensation and wrote an IOU. He later paid about 100,000 but felt it was too much and asked me to sue Li Min for extortion.”
“Are you kidding me?” Lin Dongxue was appalled. “He assaulted someone’s daughter, agreed to compensate, then turned around to sue for extortion? How shameless can one get?”
“Officer, whether he’s shameless is not my concern. My job is to design the best damage control plan.”
“Rape is a public prosecution case. Once it’s in court, it can’t be settled privately. The fact that they agreed to settle out of court and yet he still dared to sue—how bold is this guy?” Lin Dongxue couldn’t help but criticize.
“The man is already dead, so I’ll speak plainly,” Bai said. “Technically, a month has passed. The victim isn’t pregnant or infected with any disease. All evidence is gone. Without evidence, a rape case is unwinnable! I could have easily made him lose and get his money back!” Bai’s confidence was baffling. “Dragging out the case is my tactic for such cases. Without evidence, the longer it drags on, the more the woman’s reputation suffers. They usually give up.”
Lin Dongxue was astonished by his audacity.
Lin Qiupu mocked, “I’ve learned a lot today.”
Bai handed Lin Qiupu another business card. “Captain Lin, I’m sure you have many social engagements. The world is full of temptations, and men can sometimes slip up. In an unfair society, men should protect themselves. If you need help, you can contact me.”
He flashed a bright smile.
Lin Qiupu brushed his hand away. “Don’t advertise to me. I don’t need your services… Do you think Li Min wanted to kill Zheng Guohao? Do you have his contact information?”
“Yes.”
Bai took out his phone and gave Lin Qiupu a number, then asked, “Am I free to go?”
“One last question. Where were you around 1 PM today? Just routine questioning.”
Bai laughed. “I have an alibi. I was in court until 3 PM. Check tomorrow’s headlines—I won a high-profile case for a local official’s son. Not sure how many people will be cursing me, haha. Goodbye!”
