Chapter 441: Split Personality
Seeing that the woman was too agitated, Lin Qiupu tried to divert her attention. He asked, “Ma’am, what’s your name?”
The woman was panting, refusing to speak.
He then turned to the husband, “What do you both do for a living?”
“I’m in sales, and she used to be an accountant. She just quit to prepare for pregnancy,” the husband replied, glancing fearfully at the gun.
“Ma’am, I’ve heard your side. Now I want to hear your husband’s. Is that okay?”
“He only lies!” she screamed.
“Even in court, the defendant gets to speak. Let’s hear him out for five minutes, okay?”
She remained silent, which he took as agreement. The husband, trembling, said, “Officer, I swear I didn’t cheat. The money was spent on dinners with her, and the clothes were bought for her. She’s been forgetful lately…”
“You’re lying! You’re lying!” the woman shrieked. “I never bought such clothes! You must have another woman! Tell me, who is she? Is it that tramp from your office?”
Lin Qiupu sighed; this negotiation was tough. She was completely irrational.
Outside, Chen Shi listened and said, “Something’s off.”
“What do you mean?” Lin Dongxue asked.
“The person who sent the gun had a specific target. They believed these people would use it to kill. This family’s issue isn’t just infidelity. Married men cheating is common. Why target this family?”
“You don’t understand women. Infidelity is a huge blow to them.”
“Enough to make them want to kill?”
“Okay, then what do you think is special about this family?”
“Why does the man keep saying the money was spent on his wife? A cheating man would be too guilty to lie so blatantly. I’m going to ask the neighbors.”
“I’ll go with you.”
The neighbors had gathered downstairs, anxiously asking the police about the situation. Chen Shi reassured them, “No one’s hurt. We’re negotiating with the woman. Can you tell me about this family?”
From the neighbors, they learned the husband’s surname was Li, and the wife’s surname was Han.
“Mr. Li seems very honest. I thought he treated his wife well. He even bought her flowers for their anniversary. I never imagined he’d cheat.”
“I live opposite them. They’ve been arguing late at night, probably about this.”
“You don’t know, but that woman is a bit crazy. She often breaks things. I’ve complained to the property management so many times.”
Most neighbors offered subjective opinions about the family. Chen Shi asked, “Has anyone witnessed the infidelity? Mrs. Han said her husband brought a mistress home. Did anyone see that?”
Everyone shook their heads. One person mentioned, “I saw him bring a woman home once, but she was old. I don’t know if she’s the one.”
“That’s his mother!” another neighbor corrected.
The neighbors couldn’t provide evidence of infidelity. While Chen Shi was questioning them, Lin Dongxue was texting. She pulled Chen Shi aside and said, “I had the department check. There are several women named Han in Long’an City, and one has a history of mental illness. Could it be her?”
“You’re sharp!” he praised.
“Hehe, after hearing the neighbors call her crazy and seeing her behavior, I thought she might have a mental illness.”
“Call the psychiatric hospital to confirm. We need a photo.”
Lin Dongxue made the call, and ten minutes later, they received a report on her phone. It confirmed the woman had been diagnosed with high stress, mild anxiety, and memory loss.
“Memory loss? Could she have forgotten these things herself?”
Chen Shi shook his head. “Could she forget so completely? Human memory has recognition. If those clothes were really for her, seeing them would jog her memory. But she insists they’re for someone else… Could it be a split personality?”
Lin Dongxue gasped. “So the mistress is herself!”
They immediately informed Lin Qiupu. Meanwhile, he was still listening to the couple’s bickering. Enlightened by Chen Shi, he considered a negotiation strategy. Directly telling her she had a split personality might not work. She had to realize it herself.
Lin Qiupu said, “Ms. Han, let’s verify each detail to see if your husband really cheated.”
“There’s nothing to verify! It happened, I know it!” she screamed.
“You know, human memory isn’t always reliable…”
“What are you saying? Are you calling me crazy? You men just protect each other!”
“I’m not protecting anyone.”
“Then why don’t you arrest him? Why doesn’t the law punish infidelity? Marriage is a legal relationship. If someone betrays it, the law should act, but it doesn’t because it’s made by men! Men are all scum!”
“That’s extreme. If a spouse cheats, they pay more in a divorce. That’s the law.”
“I don’t want a divorce. I want to kill him and then myself! If we live as a couple, we die together!” she screamed.
Lin Qiupu broke into a cold sweat. She was unyielding. He turned to the husband sternly. “Mr. Li, tell me honestly, when did you buy those clothes?”
The man trembled. “On the 18th of last month.”
“Do you have proof?”
“What proof? I bought them for her. I don’t know what’s wrong with her. Sometimes she’s sweet, sometimes she’s crazy. Maybe sending her to the mental hospital messed her up.”
“You’re crazy! You’re crazy!” she screamed, pointing the gun at him.
“Calm down! This solves nothing.”
“I don’t want to solve anything. I want to kill him and then myself. Leave me alone!”
Outside, the police were sweating bullets. It had been half an hour, and the woman’s emotions were still high. Old Zhang asked Lin Qiupu, “Should we call SWAT and place snipers?”
“No need!” Lin Qiupu said firmly.
Chen Shi suggested over the radio, “Focus on the clothes. Make her remember wearing them.”
“How?”
“By their scent.”
Lin Qiupu sighed at the ridiculous idea but needed to stabilize her. “Ms. Han, let’s find the truth. Who is this other woman?”
