Chapter 560: The Scent of a Criminal Case
After listening, Chen Shi confirmed, “So, do you want us to help you with your condition or investigate this matter?”
Wei Yi replied, “Of course, investigate it! I feel like this is a psychological burden for me. I can’t sleep well until it’s resolved.”
“When did you see the zombie?”
Wei Yi pulled out his phone from his pants and scrolled through it, saying, “September 4th.”
“Do you have any photos on your phone?”
“No, I was scared out of my wits, nearly wet my pants. How could I dare take photos? I remember because it was the day I got my bonus.”
“Do you remember what kind of car it was and the location?”
After some detailed description, Chen Shi deduced it was likely a Dongfeng Bluebird. The location was opposite a supermarket called Fumanduo on Sanmin Road. Chen Shi nodded, “We’ll start investigating right away. We’ll visit your home later. Don’t go anywhere today, okay? By the way, how do you usually handle meals?”
“I cook instant noodles or dumplings at home.”
“Alright, we’ll call before we come. Don’t open the door to anyone else.”
Wei Yi nodded, looking miserable as he dressed and left.
Once he left, Sun Zhen asked, “He’s unemployed. Can he afford our fee? Our fees aren’t cheap.”
KK replied, “Don’t worry. I asked. He used to be an investment broker, quite wealthy. He still has over a million in savings.”
“In that case… Should we call Miss Gu to see if she can help?”
“Stop being so lovesick. You’re always thinking about Miss Gu. We have Chen here. Can’t he handle it?”
Sun Zhen didn’t respond, continuing to type on his computer. Chen Shi asked Tao Yueyue, “What do you think about this case?”
Tao Yueyue thought for a moment, then said, “The zombie is definitely fake. I think his sudden illness is someone’s doing. It might be a robbery gang wearing zombie masks. They saw him and now want to eliminate him.”
Chen Shi nodded, “From his description, I also sense a criminal case. Xiao Chong, check if there have been any criminal cases in that area recently.”
Sun Zhen searched and then shrugged, “No robbery cases, just a fire on September 3rd. The news said it was controlled in time, but a middle-aged woman living alone died. No other casualties.”
“Address?”
“Tonghua Community, about 300 meters from where he saw the zombie.”
“The timing is interesting. I’ll visit his place.”
KK grinned, “Chen, since we’re talking business, let’s split the reward three ways this time.”
“Save it. Yueyue, do you want to take some of the reward?”
“Uh… I’ll take a thousand for clothes and books.”
“Then that’s settled. The rest goes to you guys.”
KK beamed, “Yueyue really rules your household, huh.”
Sun Zhen quietly said, “Chen, Chen!”
Chen Shi sensed he had something to say and asked Yueyue to wait outside. Sun Zhen then said, “I need to tell you something. Have you visited Zhou Tiannan recently?”
“No, I’ve been busy with cases back to back. Today is my first free day.”
“Don’t be surprised when I tell you this.”
“Stop beating around the bush.”
“Zhou Tiannan has transferred to a new school, Long’an City’s Sixth Middle School, teaching physics to ninth graders.”
Chen Shi was shocked. This bastard transferred to Yueyue’s school, possibly her class. Was he doing this to spite him?
“Are you sure?”
“We’ve been monitoring Zhou Tiannan. We know his every move. This agency exists to guard against him and his men.”
KK, sitting on the table, added, “We also know that every few days, a pretty girl spends the night at his place. We don’t know what they do, but we’re decent people, so we can’t imagine. It’s always a different girl each time. A middle school physics teacher lives quite the life!”
“Does this happen often?”
“Once a week, sometimes twice.”
Zhou Tiannan and his men must have made a lot of money from their dirty dealings. But under police scrutiny, he had to keep a low profile and had no chance to spend it. These women visiting him were probably gifts from his subordinates.
“Keep an eye on this. If Zhou Tiannan suddenly stops these visits, let me know immediately.”
In the car, Chen Shi didn’t start the engine right away. He said, “Yueyue, your school…”
“Huh?” Tao Yueyue looked puzzled.
On second thought, Yueyue didn’t know Zhou Tiannan. The one who killed her mother and framed Song Lang was one of Zhou Tiannan’s top aides, using the alias “Zhou Xiao.” Chen Shi didn’t know how to bring this up.
Transferring schools wasn’t practical. These people were everywhere and probably already knew Chen Shi’s basic situation.
Currently, the Black Honey group was lying low. They made a lot of money from the last case with the mailed phones. Was Zhou Tiannan trying to mess with Chen Shi or target Tao Yueyue? Or was he brewing some other plot?
Thinking it over, Chen Shi had no better strategy and changed the topic, “Never mind. Let’s visit Wei Yi’s place.”
Driving to Wei Yi’s place, Wei Yi opened the door, his eyes showing signs of paranoia. He let them in. The dark room smelled of incense, with talismans stuck to the bedposts. Chen Shi asked, “Did you get these from a temple?”
“A friend got these from Wutai Mountain. They’re supposed to help me sleep.”
“Do they work?”
“They did at first, but then they stopped working. I still have constant nightmares and feel like ants are crawling all over me.”
Chen Shi looked around the cluttered bachelor pad. Unwashed clothes were strewn on the sofa, and leftover noodles and dumplings cluttered the table. Instant noodle cups were filled with cigarette butts.
“Excuse the mess, have a seat.” Wei Yi cleared the sofa. He was only wearing boxer shorts.
Chen Shi reached out his hand, “Sorry, I need to check your temperature.” He placed his palm on Wei Yi’s forehead. Wei Yi’s temperature was normal, but Wei Yi yelped, ran to the sink, and kept washing his forehead. Chen Shi asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Your hand felt like a hot iron. Sorry!”
“Let me check what you eat daily.”
Wei Yi brought out instant noodles, frozen dumplings, instant buns, and yogurt from the fridge, saying, “I don’t like eating out or at street vendors. It’s unsanitary. When I was working, I ate at the office cafeteria. Now that I’m unemployed, I buy groceries from the supermarket.”
“And what do you drink?”
“Water, beer, yogurt.”
“Let me see.”
Chen Shi visually inspected and sniffed some of the contents. They all seemed store-bought and normal. He asked if Wei Yi went out often, and Wei Yi shook his head, “I can’t stand the heat outside. I usually stay home playing games or watching TV. I’m most scared of sleeping. As soon as I fall asleep, the nightmares start.”
“Do you cover yourself when you sleep?”
“No, I sleep naked.”
“And you haven’t caught a cold? That’s a miracle.”
