Chapter 668: Betrayal and Threats
Lü Qi had just seen off two more police officers. The investigation had been ongoing for over two weeks. Despite knowing they had no evidence, the police kept visiting like pesky flies, constantly annoying him.
He returned to the couch, drinking beer and pondering if he had overlooked anything.
Why were the police so persistent? Did they have another angle of investigation or new evidence? This thought made him increasingly uneasy. Pacing the room, his mind buzzed like a hive of wasps.
He heard a car engine outside. Looking out the window, he saw Su Chan returning in her car. She wore sunglasses and a scarf, carrying a small bag as she elegantly ascended the stairs.
Lü Qi turned off the lights and hid by the door. As Su Chan entered, he suddenly grabbed her waist from behind, his rough stubble scratching her delicate face. He playfully asked, “Honey, where have you been?”
Startled, Su Chan replied, “Didn’t you go to the office?”
“Aren’t you happy to see me?” Lü Qi released her, noticing her recent coldness. Changes were happening subtly.
He couldn’t end up like Dong Xiao, completely oblivious until it was too late.
“Where do you think I went? Cheating on you?” Su Chan teased.
“Hmph, let me check!”
Lü Qi picked her up and threw her on the bed, tearing her designer clothes apart. After his rough satisfaction, he sat on the bed, sweating, and lit a cigarette. His damp hair fell over his forehead, giving him a menacing look.
Since Dong Xiao’s death, every day felt like walking on thin ice. Under this pressure, his libido had intensified, needing an outlet.
But Su Chan hadn’t responded as passionately as usual. This coldness gnawed at him. Afraid of losing her, he grabbed her hand and said, “Su Chan, I’ve had many women, but my love for them combined isn’t a fraction of what I feel for you. Do you know how much I treasure you?”
“I love you too. I’m just tired today,” Su Chan replied, stroking his cheek, calming the beast within him.
Lü Qi smiled foolishly, kissing her hand. As he began to want more, Su Chan calmly said, “I just met with a police officer.”
Lü Qi paused, then laughed, “I just saw two myself. You didn’t say anything, did you?”
“I have something to show you.”
Pushing him aside, Su Chan got out of bed and opened her laptop, playing a video. It was a covert recording of Su Chan and an engineer.
In the video, the engineer said, “The body can’t fit into the rocket. It’s too big and heavy.”
“Mr. Lü paid so much for your work, and this is your answer?” Su Chan retorted.
“No, you initially said the ‘cargo’ was only 200 kilograms and kept us in the dark. When we finally saw it, it was 300 kilograms. It’s too late to modify the design. There’s no way to fit it all in.”
“So what do you suggest?”
“Maybe we could tell Mr. Lü—”
“Are you dreaming?” Su Chan snapped. “Mr. Lü spent over ten million on this rocket to send that thing into space. If you tell him it can’t carry it, he’ll smash your head in.”
The engineer shuddered. “Then what do we do… Maybe we could remove part of the body to reduce weight. Mr. Lü won’t know.”
“Do what you must, but don’t let Mr. Lü or the police find out. You must keep this secret.”
“Got it, got it. We’ll keep our mouths shut.”
The video ended. Su Chan leisurely smoked a cigarette, watching Lü Qi’s reaction. He was stunned, staring at the screen, speechless.
He had always believed Dong Xiao was in space, which gave him his confidence in front of the police. He asked, “Which part was removed?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who is this person? I need to find him now!”
“Are you crazy? The police are surely watching you closely. Going to him would expose you.”
Lü Qi sat down, holding his head. After a moment, he asked, “You haven’t shown this video to anyone else, right?”
“No.”
“Why did you record it? Why show it to me now?”
“To make a deal,” Su Chan smiled.
“A deal?” Lü Qi’s heart sank. He remembered the police’s words, calling Su Chan a corporate spy. He had dismissed it as a joke, not wanting to doubt her. He believed their love was strong and pure.
“The document on the new mobile motherboard is with you, right? Give it to me.”
“What do I get in return?”
“Safety,” Su Chan said clearly. “I won’t give this video to the police. They won’t know part of the body is still here. When things settle down, you can continue as CEO.”
Lü Qi laughed bitterly, anger and sorrow mixed. He never expected the woman he loved most to say such things. “This isn’t a deal, it’s a threat!”
“I’ve spent too much time on you and Dong Xiao. I don’t want to drag this out anymore,” Su Chan said wearily.
“You’re comparing me to him? You think I’m like him!” Lü Qi roared, standing up. “I love you so much, and you were just using me, right?”
Fearful but maintaining a calm facade, Su Chan said, “Lü Qi, my love for you is real, but my mission is also real. I need that document.”
“You really love me?” Lü Qi yelled, his face twisted with rage.
“I love you.”
“Liar! Liar!” Lü Qi shouted. Hearing her say she loved him only made him angrier. He wanted a brutal, bloody answer to justify his rage.
“You liar!” Lü Qi grabbed Su Chan’s neck, lifting her off the ground. She struggled, her hands weak against his iron grip.
Blinded by love and betrayal, Lü Qi wanted to kill Su Chan, break her neck. His mind was consumed with overwhelming anger, wanting to destroy everything he had.
Suddenly, a man rushed in, using a couch cover to choke Lü Qi. Releasing Su Chan, Lü Qi roared like a beast. The man, Cao Man, skillfully stayed out of Lü Qi’s reach.
Su Chan seized the moment, grabbing items from the shelf and smashing them over Lü Qi’s head. This broke Lü Qi’s heart. He glared at Su Chan with bloodshot eyes, but finally collapsed, unconscious.
Su Chan looked in the mirror, seeing the red mark on her neck. She turned to Cao Man. “Why are you here?”
“If I hadn’t come, you’d be dead. Making deals with a beast requires ensuring your own safety first, understand?” Cao Man said with a wicked smile.
