Chapter 731: Unexpected Visitor
After asking a few questions, Zhang Xiao fell asleep again. Lin Qiupu received a phone call and went out for a while. Chen Shi sat on a bench outside the door with Lin Dongxue. They might have to stay overnight tonight.
“What a disgusting guy!” Lin Dongxue suddenly said.
“Don’t pay attention to such remarks,” Chen Shi replied.
“As a woman, I often feel gender discrimination. During my internship, the first time I went out on duty, the other party complained, asking why they sent a woman, with a tone that implied disrespect. Some leaders comment when they see me, ‘Oh, there’s a beautiful woman in your team!’ Whenever my gender is emphasized, I feel that hidden discrimination. Maybe they don’t realize it themselves; they think such remarks are perfectly normal. I don’t know if other women are as sensitive as I am, but I can say for sure, every woman in the world has wished at some point that she were a man!”
“I haven’t said such things, have I?” Chen Shi self-reflected.
“Do you think you haven’t?” Lin Dongxue smiled.
“Speaking of my opinion, I believe gender equality will eventually come, and it’s not far off. Discriminatory remarks against women stem from exploiting them because of their perceived physical weakness, which underpins all inequality. This shows how primitive and backward our supposedly civilized world still is; power still decides everything. However, with technological advancement, the gap in physical strength will gradually diminish. Look around us; there are more and more effeminate men because the world increasingly doesn’t need muscles. For example, a laborer only needs to know how to operate machinery; he doesn’t need to be strong. I think this is a positive trend. People shouldn’t conform to gender stereotypes. Men can be like women, and women can be like men, choosing their preferred way of existence. This trend will continue to expand. In time, gender and sexual orientation will no longer define each person; first and foremost, a person is human, and only then are they their gender. Then, gender discrimination will naturally dissipate.”
“You’re talking about power deciding everything, that’s such a chauvinistic viewpoint. You haven’t understood. The reason women are inferior to men is because they have to bear children. Ten months of pregnancy determines that they will always be inferior labor compared to men and also determines their status.”
“I see!” Chen Shi laughed, “I guess I need to reconsider.”
“Thank you for comforting me. I feel much better now…” Looking at the darkened room, she said, “Keep protecting this man!”
“Would you like something to eat?”
“No, thanks.” Lin Dongxue didn’t want to eat in the hospital.
“I’ll go out and buy some drinks; it’s going to be a long night.”
“Okay, I’ll have black tea.”
Chen Shi bought drinks for three people. When he returned, he found Lin Qiupu sitting with Lin Dongxue. Taking the drinks, Lin Qiupu thanked him and said, “We don’t need three people watching. Let’s take turns sleeping in an empty ward!”
“Captain Lin, are you sure you want to stay overnight here? You still have to work tomorrow!”
“We’re short-handed right now. There’s no one else we can send… Dongxue, why don’t you go to sleep first?”
“It’s only ten o’clock; I’m not sleepy at all, just bored.”
“Then lie down in the ward and play with your phone.”
“Or I could go rest first. I can actually sleep, and it’s awkward sitting with Captain Lin.”
Lin Qiupu looked disdainful. “Shameless guy, you go then!”
Chen Shi found an empty ward, set an alarm on his phone, lay down, cleared his mind, and soon fell asleep.
After midnight, Chen Shi switched with Lin Qiupu to rest. He stayed with Lin Dongxue, who was playing games on her phone, asking Chen Shi to join her.
Chen Shi asked for the hospital’s WiFi password and found that it wouldn’t connect.
An nurse in the corridor was also saying, “Why isn’t the WiFi connecting?”
But after a while, the WiFi automatically restored, and Chen Shi didn’t pay much attention.
After passing the time, staring at the phone became uncomfortable for their eyes. So the two of them just sat there and chatted. Fortunately, they always had endless topics to talk about, chatting about everything under the sun. These mundane and daily interactions were nourishment for their relationship and also Chen Shi’s favorite and passionate pursuit.
After sitting for a long time, Lin Dongxue got up to stretch and move around. She suddenly noticed someone peeking from the end of the corridor stairs, then quickly withdrew their head.
Initially, she didn’t pay much attention. When she sat down again, she jumped up suddenly and walked in that direction. Chen Shi asked, “Where are you going?”
“Shh!” Lin Dongxue gestured. She subconsciously felt for her gun, remembering she wasn’t carrying it. When she reached the stairwell, she looked around, but the person had already disappeared.
Seeing this, Chen Shi became alert too. He checked the room where Zhang Xiao was still lying, while Lin Dongxue checked both ends of the corridor and asked the nurse if anyone had come in.
Unable to relax, she said, “I just saw someone who seemed familiar. I’m going to check the surveillance!”
“Hurry back.” Chen Shi urged her.
In the hospital’s monitoring room, Lin Dongxue pulled up the footage of this segment of the corridor. Just over ten minutes ago, a suspicious person sneaked up the stairs, took a glance, and then turned and left.
The image froze, and Lin Dongxue leaned in to carefully examine the screen, surprised, her mouth wide open. It was Duan Lin’s father!
Why would he appear here!
She hurriedly called Chen Shi and said, “Duan Lin’s father came to the hospital…”
“I know.” Chen Shi’s tone was unusually calm, “He’s right here.”
Putting down her phone, Chen Shi stood in front of the uncle, pleading, “Uncle, please. Seeing the person who caused my daughter’s death, I want to know why. My daughter must have offended someone or done something wrong. Death is the only way!”
Not long after Lin Dongxue left, the uncle came to Chen Shi. Perhaps he realized that no matter how he tried to monitor Chen Shi, he went directly to him and begged.
“Uncle, this really won’t work.” Chen Shi said.
“Why does a policeman have to protect a bad person? He killed my daughter!” Pointing to the door, the uncle was emotional.
“We are not protecting bad people, we are upholding the law. He will pay the price for what he did, but in a legal way, I hope you calm down, believe in the law!”
The uncle was even more excited, “You think… would you like me to do what did to do?”
Are So Have
