Lin Dongxue opened her eyes again to find herself with her hands tied behind her back to a chair, her legs also securely bound.

Chu Wei sat opposite her, cradling a bowl of instant noodles, lifting the strands with a plastic fork and blowing on them.

“Why did you kidnap me?”

“You’re awake, little beauty,” Chu Wei said with a grin. “Damn, these noodles smell good. I haven’t eaten well in two days. Are you hungry?”

He brought the bowl of noodles close to Lin Dongxue, attempting to feed her. Lin Dongxue glared at him fiercely and spat into the bowl.

Chu Wei’s smile froze on his face. “Are you trying to provoke me? Well, I won’t hit you, but I will hit her!”

He set the noodle bowl down, went next door, and yanked a woman by the hair into the room, furiously slapping her. The woman, pitifully covering her face, did not dare to resist. Lin Dongxue couldn’t stand it anymore, yelling, “Stop it!”

Chu Wei grabbed the woman’s hair, speaking in a cajoling tone as if to a child, “She’s trying to save you. She’s a cop, kind-hearted. How will you thank her? Go slap her once, and I won’t hit you, deal?”

The woman nodded obediently, her face already red from the blows.

She approached disheveled, and slapped Lin Dongxue across the face. Lin felt a ringing in her ears, her teeth clacking against her lips, the taste of blood spreading in her mouth. More than the physical pain, the humiliation enraged her even more.

The woman glared down at her, her expression sinister, and delivered another slap, making it symmetric.

Chu Wei kicked the woman to the ground, saying, “You bitch, that was too harsh. Jealous because she’s prettier than you? Unfortunately, life isn’t fair—go complain to your mom!”

The woman lay on the floor, silent. Lin Dongxue was baffled by the situation. A man stood at the doorway looking in, his dark circles heavy, his expression haggard, like a living dead.

“Daddy’s going to feed you,” Chu Wei pulled out a packet of powder, about the size of a seasoning sachet from instant noodles, and threw it on the floor. The woman crawled like a dog to pick it up and headed out, the man’s face lighting up with excitement.

The pair disappeared behind the door.

Chu Wei lit a cigarette, gesturing towards them, “Drug addicts really are pathetic, right? A little bag of , and I can cuckold her husband right in front of her… Don’t look at me like that; those two are trash. They’d do anything for a hit.”

Laughter came from next door.

Chu Wei raised his eyebrows, “See, they’re high already. Such trash, they look like they’re about to die any minute, yet they keep dragging themselves along. Life really is cheap!”

“Are they your helpers?” Lin Dongxue finally spoke.

“Them? They don’t qualify.”

“So that night, the one who smeared blood on the wall and wrote ‘happiness’ with Luo Chuanlong was you.”

“Ha!” Chu Wei burst out laughing. “You’re a cop all right, collecting intel even now. Yes, yes, we did it. What’s the big deal? Just execution by firing squad, I’ve killed enough to earn that.”

“Why did you kidnap me?”

“Who were you calling out for when you were fainting? Old Chen? Is he your boyfriend? Do you make that face at your boyfriend too? Smile for me, and I’ll tell you why.”

Lin Dongxue felt disgusted, biting down hard on her teeth. The room’s windows were tightly shut, and it seemed to have grown dark outside. Chen Shi and Lin Qiupu were surely searching for her everywhere. She wouldn’t give up hope.

Chu Wei’s phone rang; he went to the bathroom to answer. Lin Dongxue strained her ears to listen, hearing Chu Wei say, “What Pandora’s box? I’m uneducated, don’t use metaphors with me… Damn, you’re talking about morality with me now, did you ever show any to me… Deliver the money to the place I specify, and don’t call the cops… Ha, that’s a given, you won’t call the cops… I’ll send the address later.”

Lin Dongxue couldn’t believe it; this was a genuine kidnapping. Chu Wei was demanding ransom, and she was sure it wasn’t Lin Qiupu on the other end of the phone.

Chu Wei mentioned “morality,” suggesting the other party was someone from the gang, likely the boss.
