Chapter 866: Departure of Concern
Having said these words, Chen Shi walked alone into an empty conference room, sinking into the sofa with his hands buried in his face, feeling a sharp pang in his heart.
In fact, half an hour ago, he had quietly buried Gu You in the outskirts…
Around 9 PM, Chen Shi received a call from Sun Zhen, summoning him to the office for an urgent matter that needed discussing in person.
Chen Shi guessed it must be related to Gu You, and probably not with good news.
At 10:30 PM, Chen Shi arrived downstairs at the office, went upstairs, and was greeted by a pungent smell of smoke. KK and Sun Zhen were sitting across from each other, looking somewhat dejected.
“Chen Ge!” KK stood up. “I went to Sister Gu’s place during the day and also visited her consultation room. Sister Gu has really gone missing.”
“Have you found any clues?”
KK looked at Sun Zhen, who said, “KK brought back her laptop from the consultation room. The browser history showed that two nights ago, she logged into her old ‘Black Honey’ account and had a conversation with someone whose account used to belong to Ling Shuang.”
“What did they talk about?”
“I couldn’t understand it. They used some kind of code language. However, Ling Shuang’s IP address was exposed. I checked, and it’s somewhere in the city… We didn’t dare go there at night, so we called you…”
Chen Shi frowned. “Let’s go then.”
“Aren’t we calling the police?”
“They’re already overwhelmed. The three of us will be fine. If you’re worried, wait outside when we get there.”
The three of them hurried to the address Sun Zhen had found, a guesthouse. By this time, the guesthouse’s door was already locked. KK picked the lock and they entered the dark lobby.
Sun Zhen said, “Ling Shuang used the IP address here for the wireless network.”
“Can you be more precise?”
“No.”
There was an old computer at the front desk. Sun Zhen turned it on and checked the check-in records. In a nearby duty room, an old man was snoring heavily.
“Ling Shuang must have used a fake ID card. Even if it’s fake, the age and gender should be similar.”
“Uh, I don’t know if this is it, but it’s in Room 317.”
“Let’s go see.”
Sun Zhen turned off the phone’s display. The lobby returned to darkness as they cautiously went upstairs to Room 317. The door had an electronic sensor lock.
“KK, go and take the room card from that old man.”
“Isn’t that too troublesome? The electronic lock also has a key.”
KK took out a lighter, ready to burn the sensor.
“Hey!” Chen Shi stopped him. “What if the police come?”
“Fine, wait for me!”
KK went downstairs. After a while, he came back up and used the staff’s room card to open the door.
The moment they entered the room, they smelled a strong scent of blood. Chen Shi knew they had found the right place but was afraid of what they would see next. When the lights came on, he saw Gu You lying in bed, the end of the blanket tightly tied. Blood had seeped through the sheets underneath her. She looked as if she was peacefully asleep, her face pale as paper, even her lips white.
“Miss Gu!” Sun Zhen burst into tears.
Chen Shi walked over, checking her breath with his hand. Gu You still had a faint pulse. “Call 911 quickly!”
“Don’t!” Gu You opened her eyes, but her pupils were unfocused. “You finally came.”
Due to excessive blood loss, Gu You seemed to have lost her vision. Chen Shi said, “It’s me, Xiao Chong and KK. The police haven’t come, and Lao Peng hasn’t either.”
“That’s good. Don’t look at me like this…” Gu You squeezed out a smile. “Please quietly bury me. Let him think I’ve disappeared. Otherwise, he would have to face my body. I look like this now…”
“Don’t talk anymore!”
Chen Shi placed his hand on Gu You’s forehead. Her skin was cold, and Sun Zhen was beside himself with grief.
Gu You reached out from under the blanket and grabbed Chen Shi’s hand. “Mr. Chen, I’m sorry! In fact, I lied to you. Back then, in that villa, I made a reluctant choice… I’m on Zhou Tiannan’s side…”
Chen Shi was slightly stunned. “What does that matter? I know you’re a good person.”
Gu You smiled bitterly. “Getting close to you, and to him at first, were orders from Zhou Tiannan. The purpose was to gather intelligence. I once betrayed you by leaking information, which allowed Zhou Xiao to escape smoothly… I hate my ‘mission’. As I got to know you all day by day, I enjoyed the time we spent together. Our mutual honesty and trust infected me. Especially him, a person like me, so despicable, actually received his love, often made me feel ashamed. I have never really severed ties with Zhou Tiannan. Even after his death, he still haunts me like a ghost, just like he controls others! But I swear, since he died, I have never really helped them again, never provided correct intelligence. Zhou Xiao has already noticed my betrayal. Perhaps he has been ‘too busy’ to deal with me. Every day I live in fear. I once thought of leaving without saying goodbye, but running away couldn’t save me.
“Mr. Chen, I have always wanted an opportunity to confess everything to you. We are both victims of fate. Maybe you will understand me. I want to walk in the sunlight, calmly accepting myself. Unfortunately, I never got a chance. Now if I don’t say it…”
“I made a subjective mistake. I thought human hearts could communicate. I thought I could persuade Ling Shuang, who was forced to join the gang like me. She agreed to meet, but what I was waiting for was a trap. Her heart had already fallen into darkness. Do you think I’m stupid? But I think it’s okay. A sinner can purify his soul through sacrifice. The gates of heaven may open a crack for me. Mr. Chen, I hid all the intelligence I knew about them under the pot of begonias at home, hoping it could help you…”
A fit of coughing interrupted Gu You. She tightly held Chen Shi’s hand, and Chen Shi’s heart was torn. He knew this was Gu You’s dying light.
“And… Yue Yue, I really like this child of yours. Her intelligence destined her to be a misfit all her life. Please take good care of her. You may not have noticed, but she has been worried about something lately. Even if it offends her privacy, please care for her more. This is very important for a girl with a tragic past!”
Gu You squeezed out a faint smile. Her hand suddenly became heavy, slipping from Chen Shi’s hand.
Warm liquid flowed down Chen Shi’s face. Sun Zhen knelt beside him, covering his mouth in mourning, and KK couldn’t bear to watch, standing by the window, sniffing.
After closing Gu You’s eyelids, Chen Shi said, “Let’s bury her and clean up the scene.”
He wanted to fulfill her last wish and make her disappear as if she had gone missing.
