Chapter 867: Who’s Next
After filling the pit with soil, KK stomped it down with his foot. Sun Zhen immediately got annoyed and shoved him aside, shouting, “Stop stomping with your damn feet!”
“What if wild dogs dig it up if we don’t?” KK retorted.
“Whatever,” Sun Zhen grunted.
“Enough!” Chen Shi interrupted their bickering. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, lit three, and stuck them into the ground—a humble tribute.
The three stood silently, mourning silently. Chen Shi turned to face them. “Do either of you have anything you’re hiding?”
“Ahem!” Sun Zhen cleared his throat. “I do… but I swear it’s nothing to do with burying anyone.”
KK spoke up, “I do too, but it’s kind of shady.”
“Well, I’ve been keeping something from you both,” Chen Shi admitted. He intended to practice revealing his true identity to them here first, so that when he confessed to Lin Dongxue and Lin Qiupu later, he wouldn’t be so nervous.
Both of them looked surprised. They waited for him to speak, but he hesitated. Sun Zhen said, “Chen Ge, if you don’t want to say, it’s okay. Everyone’s got secrets!”
“Chen Ge!” KK ran back to the car and returned with an envelope. “I know that Zhou Xiao is having a great time bouncing around right now. I can’t be of much help, but here’s some intel on people I know in the underworld that might assist you.”
Sun Zhen added, “Oh yeah, I checked Zhou Xiao’s boyfriend. They exchanged messages on a gay social networking forum. Zhou Xiao’s account logged in five times, using three different IP addresses. There might be clues to his hiding place in there.”
“Thank you both. Take care of yourselves. Let the police handle the risky stuff,” Chen Shi said.
“You can count on us!” KK promised loudly, noticing Sun Zhen’s disdainful look.
Once they got into the car, the three of them took one last look at the place where their worries were buried—the intelligent, elegant, wise, and decisive Miss Gu, now lying silently beneath the ground. The thought weighed heavily on their hearts.
“Is disappearance really better?” Sun Zhen asked.
“The impact of seeing a loved one’s fragmented body is unimaginable. It’s a lifetime of trauma!” Chen Shi said somberly. “Although being missing is also distressing, at least there’s still a glimmer of hope… If I were to die later, if conditions permit, please, don’t let me be found.”
The two men looked at each other, unsure of how to respond.
Chen Shi’s thoughts were interrupted by footsteps. He looked up and saw Lin Dongxue walking towards them. She asked why he was alone there. Chen Shi forced a smile, “Just feeling tired.”
“There probably won’t be any trouble tonight. Why don’t you go home and rest?” Lin Dongxue suggested.
“It’s okay. I’ll stay with you guys,” Chen Shi replied.
Suddenly, cries of alarm came from Xu Xiaodong, “My mom’s been kidnapped! My mom’s been kidnapped!”
The two hurried out to ask what happened. Xu Xiaodong had just called his mother. Although she answered, her tone seemed unnatural.
After hanging up, Xu Xiaodong felt something was wrong. He checked with the tracking software installed on his mother’s phone and found that she was moving rapidly along a road. Then the signal suddenly disappeared.
“I’ll go get everyone,” Lin Dongxue said.
All the people who remained at the bureau gathered in a meeting room. Xu Xiaodong carefully described the situation. He said that his mother’s tracking signal disappeared on the Fourth Ring Road while she was heading north, just after passing Reservoir Road.
The conversation between the two was just some everyday stuff. Xu Xiaodong found it strange that his mother seemed a bit agitated. Everyone knew Xu Xiaodong’s mother was very gentle. They speculated she might have been threatened and forced to appear normal while reporting back to her son.
“They’re planning their fourth case. If Xu Xiaodong hadn’t noticed, we would have been in the dark,” Lin Qiupu said.
Knowing Zhou Xiao and Ling Shuang’s movements early this time, we can’t afford to delay. Lin Qiupu instructed everyone to search for clues separately. Everyone moved with weary bodies. Xu Xiaodong was eager to go home and check.
Originally, Lin Dongxue and Chen Shi were going to accompany him, but Lin Dongxue found that Chen Shi was missing. Finally, she found him at the end of the corridor at the stairwell.
“Let’s go!” Lin Dongxue said decisively.
“I… I have to go back,” Chen Shi looked a bit unusual.
“Yueyue?” Chen Shi nodded, “I’ve been trying to call, but my signal is not good. It shows that the signal is located here. I know this time off work, a great speed, do not remember what to do.”
