Part 1 the jester chapter 44 destiny
Leonard’s chanting was like a restful song, echoing softly between the right and left doors, and down the winding wooden staircase.
Klein’s mind was in a trance, and he seemed to see the quiet moonlight and the peaceful, slightly turbulent surface of a lake.
His eyelids grew rapidly heavy, as if he could fall asleep standing up.
In such a perceptual blur, he again felt an invisible, eerie, indifferent gaze from behind, as if he were himself traveling in the spirit world.
An inexplicable flavor of déjà vu arose, and Klein suddenly found his way back to his thoughts, relying on his own powerful inspiration and familiar meditation to the point of barely escaping the influence of the “Midnight Psalm”.
However, he was still physically and mentally serene, and it was difficult for him to feel any other emotions.
Soon, Leonard stopped chanting and smiled sideways:
”I’m considering applying for a Fennebot organ, how can a chant not have an accompaniment?”
”Oh, just kidding, I heard them all fall asleep.”
The dark-haired, green-pupiled, poetically inclined member of the Nightwatchman’s squad stepped away and walked to the door of the room where the kidnappers and hostages were.
He suddenly swung his shoulders and crumbled his fist, blasting it against the door lock.
Ka-ching!
The wooden boards around the door lock shattered with a very faint sound.
”This requires precise control.” Leonard joked as he turned back and reached his hand into the broken hole, opening the door to the room.
Klein, who had regained his senses, wasn’t as confident as he was and reached under his armpit, drawing his pistol and adjusting the revolver to ensure that it was immediately ready to fire.
As the door to the room receded, he saw a man asleep on the table with his pistol at his feet, and a man confusedly rubbing his eyes and trying to stand up.
Stomp!
Leonard approached with a sliding step, knocking out the robber who was about to wake up.
Klein was about to follow him in when suddenly, as if sensing something, he jerked his body around and turned squarely toward the stairs.
Da, da, da, the sound of footsteps from bottom to top became clear as a man in a brown jacket and no hat, carrying a paper bag of bread, rounded the corner of the stairs and headed for the third floor.
Suddenly, he paused to see the muzzle of a gun glowing with metal looking down at him.
His pupils reflected a young man in a half-height silk bowler hat, a black formal suit, and a bow tie of the same color, the other man’s cane leaning against the railing, the dangerous revolver.
”Stop all your movements and raise your hands in three, two ……” Klein’s tone was low and soothing.
He held the revolver in both hands, trying to use his opponent as a target for practice.
In the tense atmosphere, the man in the brown jacket dropped the bag of bread and slowly raised his hands.
”Sir, have you misunderstood something?” He stared dead at Klein’s finger on the trigger and squeezed out a small smile.
Klein couldn’t tell for the moment if he was a fellow kidnapper, or a next door neighbor, but on the surface he didn’t show a single abnormality, and said in a deep voice:
”Don’t try to struggle, someone will come later to identify if it’s a misunderstanding.”
At this time, Leonard, who had dealt with the kidnappers in the house, walked out, glanced at the man at the corner of the stairs, and said leisurely:
”So the kidnappers had a companion who was responsible for picking up and buying food?”
Hearing this, the pupils of the man in the brown jacket shrank, and he suddenly rose his foot and kicked up the bag of bread that had landed in front of him in an attempt to block Klein’s view.
As if unaffected, Klein calmly pulled the trigger as if he were practicing.
Bang!
A cloud of blood rose from the man’s left shoulder.
He rolled smoothly and was about to flee to the second floor, but Leonard had reached out and braced himself against the railing and jumped.
With a muffled poof, Leonard fell from the sky and landed on top of the man.
The man passed out, and Leonard patted the slight blood that stained him, looked up at Klein, and grinned:
”Not a bad shot.”
What I want is to hit his legs …… Klein’s mouth twitched unnoticeably, and his nose smelled the faint flavor of blood.
He realized that after taking the “Diviner” magic potion, although his eyesight, hearing and sense of touch have not been improved, but still can “see” the things that are blocked, still can “hear” the faint sound of footsteps, so as to make a decision in advance. The sound of footsteps, so as to make a judgment in advance.
This belongs to the category of “inspiration”? Klein nodded thoughtfully and watched as Leonard retrieved a sharp dagger from the body of the kidnapper’s companion, and watched as he “dragged” him into the room.
With a gun in one hand and a cane in the other, Klein stepped into the room where the kidnappers were, and saw Elliot Vickroll awakened by the sound of gunshots, his body going from curled up to straightened and slowly sitting up.
The original three kidnappers had been tied solidly with the same rope Leonard had used on Elliot, strung together and tossed into a corner – not enough to tear their clothes instead.
The one who’d been shot in the shoulder was unconscious and receiving a bandage, but Leonard was too filthy to help him remove the bullet.
”You guys, you guys are?” Elliot stammered in hidden surprise at the sight before him.
”Yes, you guessed correctly, very accurately.” The half-crouching Leonard replied casually.
I can t imagine that this guy really has some humor cells …… Klein dropped his revolver and looked at Elliot:
”We are mercenaries hired by your father, you can also call us security personnel.”
”Whew, really? I’m rescued?” Elliot asked, full of joy but not daring to move carelessly.
It was obvious that he had suffered a lot in the few short hours since he had been kidnapped, and was actually devoid of the impulsiveness he should have at his own age.
Leonard stood up and said to Klein:
”You go down there and find the police on patrol and tell them to notify that tobacconist, I don’t want to go out like a kidnapper with a small child and these four guys.”
Crane, who was thinking of how to handle the follow-up, nodded, put away his revolver, lifted his cane, and walked to the stairs.
As he went down one step, he had a vague feeling that he had forgotten something and heard Leonard say to Elliot:
”There’s no need to be nervous, you’ll soon meet your father, mother and old butler Carvery, why don’t we have a game of Quintessence?”
……
Klein stifled a laugh and stepped outside into the street, following the directions of a passerby and finding two police officers on patrol.
He did not use the “special operations department” badge and documents, but in the name of professional security personnel, the original story.
As for the issue of weapons, he was not worried at all, because the day before yesterday, he had just received a “full class of weapons use license” – through the internal channels of application, approval will be very fast.
The two policemen looked at each other, and one of them went to notify the Vickroll family, while the other one followed Klein back to the room where the kidnappers were.
After waiting for more than forty minutes, and taking the opportunity when the policemen weren’t looking, Leonard gave Klein a color and asked him to follow him as he slipped out of the room.
”Believe me, it’s a terrible waste of time to go to the police station, so let’s leave.” The poetical night watchman explained with a relaxed face.
With the mentality that the sky was falling and there was a tall man to take the top, Klein didn’t retort and followed behind.
After nearly five minutes more, several speeding carriages rushed up to the building where the kidnappers were, and the old butler, Carvery, accompanied his obese master, Vickirol, down the steps.
Up to this time he had been in a daze, unable to believe that the good news had come so quickly, so quickly that it seemed like a dream.
Suddenly he heard a crunching sound and subconsciously turned his head to look over:
A two-wheeled carriage drove by, windows open, and the dark-haired, green-pupiled Leonard snapped his fingers again.
After crossing the carriage of the Vickroll family, Leonard closed the window and turned his body to look at Klein.
He smiled and raised his right hand and said:
”Good cooperation!”
We don’t seem to be familiar …… Klein politely high fived the other party.
He also didn’t expect the kidnapping case to be solved so quickly, and could only secretly sigh with emotion that Extraordinary People are indeed Extraordinary People, and even with his own half-assed Sequence 9, he could still do a lot of unbelievable things.
”This is the action that nobles use to express their celebration after fencing.” Leonard explained with a smile.
”I know.” Klein had quite a few noble classmates.
He looked out the window and frowned slightly:
”Aren’t we going to check with Mr. Carvingley? If he thinks it was the police who rescued Elliot, our honorarium will be halved.”
A full hundred pounds!
As for the matter of providing the kidnapper’s whereabouts, because of the “meeting” just now, there won’t be any doubt.
”Don’t worry about it, money isn’t that important to our lives.” Leonard spread his hands and laughed.
…… To me, it’s very important! Klein squeezed out a polite smile and said:
”Quite a few poets have died early because of poverty.”
Leonard gave a laugh:
”I’m sure Elliot wouldn’t lie about this, I can see there’s still a remnant of innocence left in him, but even if you get a £200 honorarium, you won’t get much of a share.”
”How much can I share?” Klein asked instantly.
”According to the long-standing, unwritten rule, half of the remuneration has to be handed over to Mrs. Oleanna as extra funds for the squad, and the rest will be divided equally among the participating team members, but unfortunately, you’re not a full member, so you’ll probably only get ten percent.”
Ten pounds? It’s not bad la …… Klein pretended he wasn’t heartbroken and turned to ask:
”Aren’t you worried that the kidnappers will wake up and understand that they’ve been affected by extraordinary powers?”
”They won’t suspect it, they’ll just think that the weather was too good for sleep to resist collapsing, they’ll even believe that chanting only exists in the dream world, it’s something we’ve verified.” Leonard replied very confidently, “It’s that Demon Hunter bullet of yours that will make people wonder, of course, a weirdo who likes the occult is a very logical explanation.”
”Hmm.” Klein let go of his worry, only to feel that he had forgotten, or overlooked, something.
……
Back on Zoltan Street, Klein didn’t wait for Carvedley to come, took a walk to the Welch residence, took a different route home, and stopped to pick up beef, kale, and other ingredients for dinner.
It was the usual pleasant dinner, the usual leisurely chat between brother and sister accompanied by study, except that there was one more visitor who knocked at the door.
He was a member of the staff who had come to remove all the 1p copper coins from the gas meter.
As the night wore on, the three siblings exchanged goodnights and went to their separate rooms.
Crane was sound asleep when he was suddenly awakened by the sound of OO@@@ outside, and, puzzled, he opened the door and went outside the unoccupied part of the bedroom.
Pushing open the door to the dappled room, Klein saw a gray table.
On the table lay a notebook with a cover made of stiff paper, completely stained black.
An inexplicable sense of déjà vu surfaced, and Klein walked over and opened the notebook.
On the open page, there was a drawing of a “Fool” wearing gorgeous clothes and a brilliant headdress!
Below the “Fool” was a line in Hermetic script:
”Everyone dies, including me.”
Klein was startled when he suddenly realized that the corners of the Fool’s mouth were hooked!
Whew!
He sat up, saw the scarlet moonlight through the curtains, saw the bookshelves and the desk, saw the outline of his bedroom, and realized that he had had a nightmare.
As a “soothsayer”, he understood that dreams always reveal something, so he carefully recalled it.
In the midst of his recollection, Klein froze, for he knew what he had overlooked today!
While immersed in Leonard’s chanting, he had been subjected to an invisible, indifferent gaze from behind.
This gaze was different from both normal meditation and the experience of using psychic vision, giving himself a sense of déjà vu!
And according to Captain Dunn, once a similar feeling occurs, it often means ……
Klein sat bolt upright, confirming the feeling:
Yes, that was it, that notebook! That note from the Antigonus family!
