Part 2 The Faceless Man Chapter 49 The Dream
Inside the cold, chilly hall, Klein suddenly shivered, withdrew his eyes, and addressed the bodyguard lady:
”Go back.”
Judging from the performance of Aztec Copper Whistle just now, there was probably a terrifying evil spirit in the innermost room, and the level of danger was probably higher than that of “Master of Secret Puppets” Rossago and “Hurricane Lieutenant General” Tsilingus… …It has been wandering for hundreds or thousands of years, and may already be equal to a high sequence powerhouse. If it wasn’t for the difficulty of its power penetrating the room, I’d be a dead man by now. …… Even if Ms. Bodyguard is one of the best in Sequence 5, there’s almost no hope of me turning the tables when I add her to the mix… …One must be self-aware and not be seduced by “treasures” that are suspected to be the legacy of extraordinary traits and magical items …… Greed often leads to death …… Klein silently found reasons to convince himself.
The bodyguard lady gave him a sideways glance, her gaze showing little emotion as she asked:
”And after that?”
After that? Klein bared his teeth quietly, weighing his words:
”Let Miller Carter call the police, who knows when that evil spirit can get out of its trap, solve it as soon as you can, no, no, Mr. Carter doesn’t know much, call the police in such a way, the police department will not take it seriously enough, the first batch of people who come to explore and inspect will be killed or injured, and may even indirectly help the evil spirit to get out of its bondage, and also, after seeing a statue like this, I, a detective might be silenced …… er …… Have you seen the white bones and spiritual luster in the room?”
The bouncer lady redirected her gaze to the dark tunnel behind the half-open stone door and nodded her head with a small amplitude.
Klein’s thoughts turned electrically:
”I’m guessing those are the bodies of previous explorers who were killed in that room by evil spirits, the extraordinary among them left behind magical items that may be related to the Viscount family that originally inhabited the houses outside, I’m going to ask for their last names, rummage through the library and hunt for their descendants to see if I can get any useful clues. ”
”Once the initial situation has been established, I will make my choices depending on the severity of the situation, possibly getting some explosives and destroying the door to keep anyone else out, or possibly dropping an anonymous letter to the police department detailing the presence of the evil spirits, but that will have to be worked out beforehand to hedge my bets.”
”None of this is too urgent, it can be done slowly.”
Ms. Bodyguard listened quietly, staring ahead, her tone wavering:
”Aren’t you considering organizing manpower to purify that evil spirit?”
”Even if there are no magical items left behind, just the parts that remain after the evil spirit dissipates are precious enough.”
It’s the first time I’ve seen you talk so much …… probably …… Klein replied without hesitation, “The risk is too high, I think my life and health are more important.”
He organized his words and added:
”The most powerful and strong person I know is you, and from the performance just now, you don’t seem to be a match for that evil spirit, I can’t imagine any way to solve it outside of calling the police.”
Miss Bodyguard turned her body, her pale face slightly transparent.
”You still have your sanity.” She commented calmly and indifferently, then floated towards the exit of the ancient hall.
Aside from being under the influence of the “Real Creator”, what part of me looks like a madman? Kraven made a sarcastic comment and followed closely behind the bodyguard, carrying his lantern and cane, feeling that he was being watched by icy eyes in the dark tunnel the entire time.
It wasn’t until he stepped out of the stone door that had the air of antiquity about it that the feeling dissipated with a vengeance.
Klein turned his body, closed the door, and closed the inverted candlestick, the knife-like brand and the evil statue of the six gods inside, letting them continue to “sleep” in the darkness and silence that had remained unchanged for thousands of years.
Patting down the dust on his clothes, he changed the lamp into a different hand and returned to Miller-Carter’s basement at a brisk pace, while the bodyguard lady had habitually disappeared into thin air.
Miller-Carter was pacing inside the basement, and when he saw Klein come out, he spoke up and asked:
”Well? What’s the situation inside?”
Klein had already thought of what to say and said with an afterthought expression:
”It’s very bad, there are a lot of snakes, and quite a few places have collapsed, I intend to gather some information, find all the manpower, and make preparations for a second exploration, during this period of time, it’s best if you don’t send anyone in, believe me, there are more poisonous snakes than you can imagine.”
The old gentleman Miller took a light breath and asked with slight trepidation:
”Do they swim?”
”Do you know any professionals who deal with snakes?”
Klein nodded instantly, “I’ll get someone to work with me and try to take care of this, it’s already a cold fall day and the snakes are reluctant to move, so as long as you don’t send anyone in to startle them, nothing will happen.”
”Yes, as soon as possible please, in the meantime I will keep this door closed and not let anyone in.” Miller sniffed and relaxed a little.
Seeing that the true but not all words bluffed his employer, Klein was busy putting down his marquee and pushed up his gold-rimmed glasses:
”Next, I’ll gather some information and get an initial idea of the layout of that underground structure before exploring.”
”This requires you to tell me which Viscount was the original owner of this house.”
Miller had bought this building precisely because of the name of the former noble estate, and immediately replied:
”Viscount Bond.”
”What do you know about him and his family?” Klein posed a professional follow-up question.
Miller mused:
”I don’t know much, I only know that they were given the title in the ‘Battle of the Back Oath’, and once had a prominent time, but for some reason they were suddenly defeated a few decades ago, and lost successive heirs, so they could only look for relatives from the side branches to retain the title, and the new Viscount Pound was a, heh, in short, he squandered exhausted most of his family’s fortune and was demoted by the king to a subordinate baron, he should still be in Berkland at the moment but could go bankrupt at any time.”
The Battle of the Back Oath? The War of the Back Oaths that began in 738 of the Fifth Age? Klein, a history college student who had successfully graduated, reflexively recalled the corresponding knowledge.
That war, more than six hundred years ago, was a war involving religion. The southern Kingdom of Feneport originally believed in both the Mother God of the Earth and the God of Knowledge and Wisdom, but under the influence of certain factors, the two churches were in serious opposition, and the believers clashed from time to time.
Its two neighbors to the north, the Kingdom of Rune and the Kingdom of Pheonix, seized this opportunity and opened a war under the pretext of protecting the freedom of faith, and the Forsak Empire joined in at a later stage in an attempt to sabotage the designs of Rune and Pheonix, but still failed to reverse the situation and suffered a defeat.
The result of the war was that the countries of Lemberg, Marthy, and Segal, which were located at the border of Rune and Feneport, respectively, and the border of Intis and Feneport, became independent, with the belief in the God of Knowledge and Wisdom as the main focus, and only the Church of the Earth Mother Goddess was left within the Kingdom of Feneport.
Because both sides of the war accused their opponents of reneging on the Sacred Oath at the end of the Fourth Age, the conflict that lasted for five years was called the “War of the Broken Oath”.
After that, the North Continent was at peace for more than 300 years, not that there was no conflict between nations, but there were no more large-scale wars, and this lasted until Roselle invented the steam engine and improved sailing ships and artillery.
This is what is recorded in history textbooks …… Now that I think about it, since faith was involved, there must have been extraordinary people from the church involved, and secretly a fierce transcendental war must have erupted …… However, at that time, it was said that it was already the era when transcendence was scarce, and extraordinary people’s numbers weren’t much …… Squad Style Battles? Could the sudden defeat of the Pound family decades ago and the successive loss of heirs have anything to do with the discovery of that ancient building in the ground? Klein asked thoughtfully:
”Then do you know where Pound from Baron currently resides?”
”Sorry, I’m not sure.” Miller shook his head slightly.
Klein inquired a few more times, and seeing that he could not get any more information, he excused himself and left, returning to 15 Minsk Street.
At this time, it was nearly half past five, the sky was cloudy and dim like night, Klein thought that the various public libraries should have already closed, so he temporarily put down the matter of the underground buildings and prepared dinner for himself.
He originally wanted to learn how to make Fernbot noodles according to the recipe in the newspaper, but he ended up making noodles with meat and sauce and vegetables, which tasted unexpectedly good.
With a full stomach, Klein casually flipped the coin to divine whether or not he should call the police at the moment, and got an answer of no.
……
At night Bakerland was as peaceful as any other city, at least the Jorwood district was.
Klein was sleeping soundly, wandering vaguely through different dreams, when suddenly, with a start, he became acutely aware that he was dreaming.
Someone has invaded my dreams? Klein resisted the urge to frown and examined his surroundings in feigned confusion.
He found himself in a rolling, yellow desert.
There was a sudden hiss from the sky, and a huge monster, gold in black, soared and flew in.
The creature had a thick lizard-like body with a pair of broad skin-covered wings on its back, and it drew lower and lower, blotting out the sun in the sky.
A dragon! A mighty dragon! Klein saw scales the size of disk saucers, a huge mouth bubbling with pure light, and two dark golden vertical pupils.
Roar!
The dragon spat out light, a boundless light that covered everything, and a large part of the desert was obliterated.
Within the light, a silhouette jumped into midair.
He was three or four meters tall, but did not have the unique vertical single eye of a giant, he had a handsome, young face, and wore black full body armor that was splashed with blood.
This giant-like knight swung out his broadsword from the bottom upwards, countless green, white and purple flames then condensed into lances, densely shooting towards that giant dragon, he seemed to have an entire legion of illusory extraordinarys fighting in conjunction with him!
In the rain of shooting stars and flames, the giant knight leaped to the top of the dragon’s head and made a slashing motion downwards.
The streaks of shadows he had dragged out earlier instantly overlapped, and his sword light turned into intersecting lightning.
Snap!
The earth shook crazily, and the giant dragon fell down, its blood dark gold.
At this time, the image changed abruptly, presenting a bloody gate, the very same blood-colored gate that Klein had seen in the innermost part of that ancient building that afternoon.
With a creak, the bloody door opened a crack, allowing one to vaguely catch a glimpse of a black, high-backed chair.
In the high back chair sat a normal sized man, his head bowed, quiet and dead.
As the angle of view got closer, Klein saw clearly what the man was wearing, he seemed to be the same knight who had killed the dragon just now, and he was still wearing his blood-stained black armor!
The only difference was that he was no longer three or four meters tall.
Just then, the man suddenly raised his head, his handsome young face was covered with horrific marks of rotting bone after bone, while his eyes were cold and unfeeling.
Startled, Klein awoke from his dream with a start and opened his eyes to see the scarlet moonlight piercing through the curtains.
