Part 3 The Traveler Chapter 140 Temporary Contracts
Upon hearing Emilius Levitt’s words that were more of a statement than a question, a dense layer of cold sweat instantly seeped out of Bilt’s forehead.
He opened his mouth as if he wanted to argue for something, but in the end, he snapped to one knee and trembled under that unspeakable pressure:
”Admiral, Your Excellency the Admiral, the vagabond from before died of a sudden illness, so I had to find a new adventurer who could change his appearance.”
At this moment, Klein wasn’t too nervous, as Admiral Emilius Levitt had noticed himself in the banquet hall, it didn’t make sense that he would only recognize the Extraordinary now. The fact that he was still willing to meet instead of outright avoiding the risk meant that he wasn’t too concerned about who exactly it was that Bildt was looking for.
Surprisingly, he wasn’t worried at all? This is the confidence of a demigod, or his extraordinary pathway can eliminate hidden dangers in advance …… Klein lifted his head with difficulty and turned his gaze to that admiral who had already turned his body.
”Good strength.” Emilius Levitt commented without expression.
He still looked at Bildt, who had fallen to one knee, and said:
”Don’t try to play tricks in front of me that won’t make it to the poker table.
”Ordinary people and extraordinary people are in a different place in this world, and I, as a practitioner of order, can clearly confirm that.”
Sure enough, as described in the information, this Lord Admiral has a tendency to be didactic, and I have to keep that in mind, it’s a very different style from myself, and Gelman Sparrow …… Klein withdrew his gaze thoughtfully and cast it to the ground as if he couldn’t withstand that kind of intimidating pressure.
Emilius Levitt took a step forward:
”Deception was the first mistake you made; indiscretion was the second.
”The sudden death of a vagabond who spent great effort, followed by the appearance of an adventurer who can change his appearance, don’t you think it’s too much of a coincidence?”
Yeah, it’s a bit of a coincidence …… Klein was close to repeating the other party’s rhetorical question.
If he hadn’t confirmed it on Gray Mist, he would have wondered if he had been set up by some mythical creature or “0” level seal again.
For his part, Bildt’s pupils shrank as he listened, and he came to his senses.
He realized that out of fear and trepidation, he had only wanted to grab that last life preserver, and had completely lost the caution that comes with experience, not even thinking about whether the appearance of Germaine Sparrow was too much of a coincidence or not!
The first time he had been in the “Sweet Lemon” bar, the tramp had died of a sudden illness! The more Bildt thought about it, the more he realized that he had fallen into a well-planned trap.
Emilius Levitt saw Bildt’s face change, both in realization and remorse, so he gently nodded and said:
”My father, the old Count Levitt who has passed away, once taught me a saying.
”Forgive your men for their first mistake, he said.
”Bildt, you must thank him for his mercy.”
Bildt’s tense spirit eased for a moment, and was inexplicably and intensely moved.
He had thought that Admiral Emilius Levitt, who was closer to a god than a man, would execute himself on the spot as a warning to all the adventurers who secretly served him, who knew that the other party would choose to forgive.
”His Excellency the Admiral, I, I ……” Bilt failed to form words for a moment.
Emilius kept his serious attitude and said in a deep voice:
”There is a second half of the words just now, that is ‘punish them severely for their second mistake’, Bilt, do you know what to do in the future?”
Bilt, who was kneeling on one knee, immediately straightened his back, clenched his right fist against his left chest and said:
”Only allegiance to His Excellency the Admiral!”
Emilius nodded and turned to look at Klein:
”What is your name?”
It depends on which of my identities you’re asking …… Klein inwardly spat and calmly replied:
”Germaine Sparrow.”
Emilius Levitt was suddenly quiet for two seconds, and the atmosphere in the utility room seemed to freeze.
Just as Klein couldn’t help but feel some uneasiness welling up in the bottom of his heart, Emilius finally spoke:
”So it’s you.”
Your Excellency Admiral, speaking as if you know me, I’m just an ordinary military informant who has only collected the bounty through you, and hasn’t even had time to reimburse anything …… Klein secretly mumbled a couple of sentences, and the more he thought about it, the more his heart didn’t feel weak.
Emilius nodded and addressed Bilt and Klein:
”The plan is to proceed as usual.
”But a deed needs to be signed.”
A contract? Klein fought hard against that majesty and looked up at Emilius.
Without explaining anything, Admiral Emilius picked up the pen and paper he had prepared long ago and placed on the windowsill, and brushed and wrote.
Every time he put pen to paper, there seemed to be golden light bursting out, and the scene was solemn and sacred as if he was drafting some law.
Klein gradually squinted his eyes, his vision began to blur, and he couldn’t help but lower his head again.
After an unknown amount of time, Emilius stopped the pen, picked up the page, and said to Klein:
”Sign your name at the end.
”If the terms are not satisfactory, you may not sign.”
Do you think I dare, or don’t you? Klein belly-laughed and watched as Bilt got up, took the pen and paper, and handed it to himself.
The terms on that piece of paper were simple, just a few, roughly constraining Germaine Sparrow’s behavior while playing Emilius Levitt, including but not limited to not actively exposing the problem, not using the Admiral’s identity to do things that were detrimental to Emilius himself, not getting too close to Miss Cynthia, and so on and so forth.
I thought that this kind of big person would not care too much about the chastity of his mistress …… This admiral is really a curmudgeonly man …… However, I am not that kind of person …… Klein hid his curiosity and just asked as if exploring an academic question:
”What if Ms. Cynthia wants to have intimate contact with me?”
His subtext was that acting too detached and resistant would easily be seen as a problem by Cynthia, asking how to grasp a degree.
”Never mind.” Emilius said without expression, “For the duration of the contract, you will either have no desire or lack the necessary physical ability to face her.”
That’s still possible? This contract is a bit powerful ah …… It’s the first time I’ve seen a contract other than the one with a spirit world creature, and while the former had to borrow the power of the Underworld, this one only has two parties in the transaction …… Is this Admiral Emilius’s extraordinary demigod-level ability? The “Arbiter” way? Klein glanced at the expiration date and realized that it was five days.
Is he confident that he will definitely return within five days, or is his current status only able to keep the contract in effect for five days? Klein read the terms again, picked up the pen, and wrote down Germaine Sparrow’s name.
As the last letter ended, he saw the words on the paper emerge one by one with golden auras that converged into a brilliant glow.
Wrapped in the brilliant light, the paper quickly faded and disappeared, as if it had become one with the rules of the world.
The invisible thin gray mist around his body gently swirled, and Klein clearly felt that he had added layers of restrictions that could not be described in words.
These restrictions rapidly internalized and temporarily became part of his spiritual and physical body.
The gray mist can resist external bad luck and fortune within a certain degree, but there is no way to shield the contract I have already signed …… Also, if it can be shielded, none of the messenger s contract will take effect …… Klein looked at Emilius Levitt again with some dawning realization.
This admiral has already restrained his majesty, and flipped his palm to reveal a dark golden talisman.
On it were symbols such as the “Sword of Judgment” and densely-packed magical markings, and the entire body of the talisman was restrained and deep, giving the impression that it was a codex.
”This is a high-level talisman that I made using my own blood, the ancient codex of the Fourth Age, and the royal family’s ‘0’ level seals.” Emilius said flatly, “It’s called the ‘Ninth Law’, and it can present a similar feeling of majesty as mine when given a small amount of spirituality, which is something even an ordinary person can do. Without it, it would be difficult for you to truly disguise me.”
Indeed, the sense of majesty that I change to simulate is only limited to the surface, it’s fine to fool around in normal times, but it’s useless once I need to deter any of my subordinates……. Klein quietly sighed in relief.
Emilius continued:
”With your current strength, you should be able to withstand its use.
”By using it, you can assign the necessary limitations to the target so that he will have to endure an extremely unfavorable situation.
”In this way, even if a demigod does try, you can scare him away.
”If nothing ends up happening, there is no need to use it, and it will belong to you afterward.
”It is valid for one year.”
? Klein was stunned at first, then felt a strong surprise.
Since he used up the high-level spell created through the “Mutated Sun Holy Emblem”, he finally had another one.
Although there was a limit to how long it could last and it could only be used once, it had no negative effects, but of course, the harsh conditions for making it made it very rare.
Worthy of being a demigod, Bilt is much more generous …… Well, the cost of buying a vagabond and a pirate general level adventurer is not the same …… Klein thought happily while silently reaching out with his palm and catching the high-level talisman called the Ninth Rhythm. Ninth Law”.
Then, he saw Emilius unbuckle his belt.
After a short silence, Klein controlled his embarrassment and took off his clothes without any expression.
Soon, he and Emilius exchanged clothes and put on the dark blue, straight uniforms.
Watching Emilius and Bildt leave along the isolated path within the garden, Klein meticulously worked on the buttons and turned his head to look out the glass window.
Against the deep black of the night and the scarlet moonlight, the glass window seemed like a mirror, blurring out Klein’s current appearance:
Neatly back-combed black hair, deep azure eyes, slightly downturned corners of his mouth, a beardless face, an old-fashioned, serious demeanor, and dark blue clothing with ribbons, medals, and epaulettes.
Klein moved the corners of his mouth and muttered silently to himself:
”From now on, I am the Admiral.”
