Part 4 The Undead Chapter 29 Good People Doing Good Things
What had gone wrong? Crane’s spirits instantly tightened.
He had experienced too many accidents and was aware that he was prone to extraordinary events around him, and as soon as he encountered a similar situation, he was inevitably subconsciously on high alert, very much with the feeling of having PTSD.
Watching attentively as Hazel Macht’s back disappeared into the stairway, Klein noticed that the other party was only in a hurry and not panicked.
This seems to mean that the situation is within her grasp …… Moreover, Macht is a member of the House of Commons, an upper class person within the kingdom second only to the aristocracy, and there is a high probability that there is an extraordinary person around to protect her, well, Earl Hall’s eldest son is here as well, and his bodyguard must be an extraordinary person …… In addition, St. Samuel’s Church is only ten minutes away from Birklund Street by carriage, so if there is really any problem, the night watchmen and the priests and bishops can come at any time …… Unless one has already held the determination of certain death, no one will create accidents at this ball …… Klein grew calm and had another guess about Hazel’s condition:
She rushed to the third floor in order to resolve the negative effects of the magical item!
When Klein asked Aroldus where he could get a magical item that could steal someone’s extraordinary ability, one of the answers given by the “Magic Mirror” was Hazel Macht!
Thinking back to the previous scene during the dance, Hazel’s image was quickly reconstructed within Klein’s mind, and was dominated by the different accessories she wore.
Hair jewelry, earrings, necklace, brooch, tulle gloves …… Which one could it be? Klein withdrew his gaze and felt thirsty, so he grabbed a glass of fresh water and gulped it down.
He had just set the glass down when he saw Vahana Hazen, the etiquette teacher, leaning in with her dinner tray.
This lady, wearing a long red dress but not at all vulgar, smiled lightly and said to Dawn Dantes:
”I notice that you are not too fond of drinking.”
”I have delayed very important things because of drinking.” Klein casually plumped up the image of Dawn Dantes with experience and depth.
Of course, he knew how to restrain himself and did not use his “Faceless Man” ability to lose a finger, thus proving how determined he was.
Vahana smiled thoughtfully at his words:
”Your past is full of mysteries, which has a fatal attraction to many young girls.”
Without continuing the topic, she turned to say:
”I forgot to tell you that my husband’s troubles are solved.”
Klein picked up a glass of champagne and raised it forward with a smile:
”That’s a delightful thing to hear, congratulations.”
He didn’t mention at all that he had secretly had help.
Vahana gave him a deep look and similarly raised the red wine in her hand and said:
”Cheers.”
After clinking lightly and taking a sip from each, Klein said a polite apology, set down his glass, and turned toward the lavatory location.
This was not because he wanted to go above the gray mist, but simply because of the negative effects of the “Deathstroke” revolver, he drank too much water and planned to go to the bathroom.
When he walked out of the washroom, Klein looked up at the stairway leading from the second floor to the third floor, and found that Hazel Macht was descending step by step, her footsteps were no longer hurried, and her expression was calm and unperturbed.
Sure enough, nothing serious …… should be the negative effect of the magical item on her body …… also don’t know what the effect is …… Klein sighed with relief and casually scanned the dance floor, in the between changes in the music and made his way over to one of the ladies, inviting the other to dance.
And with the appearance and temperament of Dawn Dantes, there was no doubt that it was not refused.
In this way of dancing and eating and chatting and eating, the dance slowly came to an end, and one guest after another took their leave.
Klein, who had already completed his business card exchange, did likewise, but was not the first nor the last to leave.
The hall quickly grew cold, and Lady Liana beckoned her daughter, Hazel Macht, over as she oversaw the servants cleaning up.
”Mr. Dawn Dantes is doing much better than I expected, and a number of ladies have already been asking me about him in private just now.” Lady Lilliana said imploringly, “Hazel, you have just danced and chatted with Mr. Dantes, what do you think of him as a person? You are more mature than any young girl your age, and I trust your vision and judgment.”
She knew her daughter well, so she deliberately added the latter half of the sentence, otherwise Hazel might not be interested in answering in detail.
When facing her mother, Hazel was not so condescending and thoughtfully said:
”He’s not too familiar with this circle and is prone to bring up topics that offend people, but is very insightful.”
”Very insightful ……” Mrs. Liana repeated her daughter’s words in slight surprise.
From what she knew of Hazel, that was quite a high praise.
She couldn’t help but be a little worried, fearing that her daughter had taken a liking to Dawn Dantes.
Did Hazel think less of all the marriageable gentlemen around her because they were too young, too shallow, not capable enough? Dawn Dantes was just the type that precocious young girls liked …… Liana suddenly regretted a little bit inviting that gentleman to the ball.
She knew that with Hazel’s character, if she fell in love but was opposed, it was entirely possible that she would do something like elope.
Hazel seemed to have sensed her own mother’s thoughts and said with little emotional fluctuation:
”I only like men who are strong enough.”
Phew …… Liana secretly sighed in relief, no longer worrying about the question she had just asked, as Hazel was a young girl who didn’t care to lie.
……
Late at night, Hazel got up from her bed and, with the help of her night vision, changed into clothes that made it easier to move around.
She climbed down from her bedroom balcony, carefully avoiding the family’s bodyguards, and snuck out of the garden all the way to the middle of Birklund Street – not all sewer entrances were free for humans to pass through and had vertical metal steps.
Hazel skillfully moved the manhole cover, climbed down, and closed it again from the inside.
It was nearly three quarters of an hour before she moved the manhole cover and returned to the shadows of the street.
Just then, Hazel saw a dark shadow tumble lightly into the garden not far away.
”No. 160 ……,” she read out the corresponding door number.
It was none other than the home of Dawn Dantes.
On the third floor of the building, Klein woke up once again from his dreams with a psychic intuition that made him want to feed his creeping hunger to the intruder who had interrupted his sleep.
This time, he opens the iron cigarette case and releases the “Grieving Souls” secret doll.
The figure of Seniol in a dark red coat first walks into a full-length mirror, then jumps to the bulbous window of the valet’s room.
”He watched Richardson and saw the valet roll over and sit up, looking fearfully and nervously at the door.
The door of the room opened noiselessly, and a figure flashed in.
Under the scarlet moonlight the infiltrator revealed a brownish complexion, a soft silhouette, and short curly dark hair, evidently of the Byronic race of the Southern Continent.
With a slightly grim air, he stood in the doorway, looked at Richardson who looked at him, and said in a deep voice:
”Have you considered it well?
”Don’t think that you can get the peaceful life you want by breaking away from us, you have the blood of the people of the God of Death flowing in your body, and are destined to give all you have for the restoration of God’s glory.
”Think about your dead mother, think about the bullying you were once subjected to, do you want your children to continue to grow up in the eyes of others’ discrimination in the future, and to be others’ servants forever?”
”…… But what can I do ……” Richardson buried his head and said with difficulty.
”Wait for the assignment given to you.” The infiltrator’s voice softened a bit.
Richardson didn’t answer good or bad, and seemed to be struggling in his mind.
And the infiltrator didn’t care about his hesitation, and when he had agreed, he simply turned his body around and exited the room the way he came.
”The people of the death god’s children …… spiritual order, or other people of the Byron restoration organization?” Klein, who had witnessed everything just now, leaned back on his bed and muttered silently to himself, “What kind of task would they have Richardson do? Stealing my money to fund the organization? Or create a terrorist incident at some upper-circle party?”
By now, the infiltrator had climbed down from the large balcony, through the garden, over the outer wall with its vertical iron fence, and back into the street.
Suddenly he saw a figure lunging to his left, and, busily dodging, he clenched his fist and fired a blast.
Bang!
The fist struck the dark shadow, but it went straight through, as if the hit was a shadow created by the glow of a gas street lamp.
At the same time, the back of his head was suddenly struck hard, and his entire body fainted to the ground at once.
Hazel’s silhouette swirled to the back of the infiltrator’s side, her expression slightly excited, as if she had accomplished a successful fraud.
She quickly collected herself, maintained her lofty posture, and glanced sideways at the black iron-barred gate of 160 Birklund Street.
The young girl bent her back, tugged at the infiltrator’s arm, and dragged him, step by step, to the door of Dawn Dantes.
Immediately afterward, Hazel released her left hand, disposed of the marks, took two steps forward with her chin slightly raised, and pulled the doorbell.
Then, with her back straight, she left quickly, returning along the shadows of the street toward her home.
And on a gas streetlight outside No. 160, on the glass surface encased in a black metal grating, the figure in the dark red coat and the outdated tricorn hat was silently reflected, watching the whole process from the sidelines.
……
What to do with it …… The room was filled with Klein’s difficult thoughts.
He knew that Hazel had been kind enough to help her neighbor with the infiltrator and to keep her name anonymous, but then, after the housekeeper called the police, the matter would be investigated in depth and would surely be turned over to the night watchmen, and at that time, the question of who had knocked out the infiltrator would be an important one.
If Klein was really just an ordinary person, that was nothing, feel free for the night watchmen to investigate, but not only was he a Sequence 5 powerhouse, but he was also plotting to steal the items behind Charnis’s door, and didn’t want the process to be interrupted by an accident, and had to change his identity again.
Frankly, his earliest idea of dealing with the situation was to find an excuse to fire Richardson.
However, the conversation he had just heard had shaken him a little.
If this time to dismiss Richardson, the desire for a peaceful life he is the same as I personally pushed into the abyss, can only be involved with the group of people …… Unfortunately, Dawn Dantes this identity is a “mission”, or else casually help him is not a big problem! …… Klein thought with a sigh.
Ten seconds later, the unconscious infiltrator in the doorway suddenly stood up, moved his neck, and hid in the nearby shadows, and at this time, Walter, the butler who heard the doorbell, had just put on his clothes and walked out of the front door of the building.
