6-21 The Tzu said, “Above the middleman, one can speak of the top; below the middleman, one cannot speak of the top.”

[Translation

Confucius said, “A person with talents above the middle level may be given a lecture on high learning; a person below the middle level may not be given a lecture on high learning.”

[Commentary

Confucius has always believed that there are differences in human intelligence from birth between the wise and the foolish, i.e., the upper wise, the lower foolish and the middle. Since there are so many gaps in human beings, Confucius put forward the principle of “teaching according to one’s ability” in the process of teaching, which is an important content of his educational thought, i.e., to decide the teaching content and teaching method according to the level of students’ intelligence, which makes a positive contribution to the formation and development of China’s pedagogy.
