Chapter 107: Internal affairs over diplomacy
This is normal, people are a country’s head of state, naturally, do not have to worry about the mood of the small shrimp, talk and laugh in the end of the matter, the bright line is the negotiating team of the Eiffel, the dark line is the dark operation of Allen Wilson.
But the most important channel, in fact, is still the communication between Prime Minister Aidley and Stalin himself.
Direct communication between the Führer is more important than any bright or dark line, and the real decision is made over there. His own side was busy just for the fun of it.
“We’ve basically finished talking about our problems with the Soviets, and all that’s left is the encounter between the Americans and the Soviets. I wonder where we’ll be working after this meeting.” Ivor was in a soothing mood, already fantasizing about a flatulent future.
“Me? I want to go back to India now.” Alan Wilson gave a very serious answer after thinking about it for a while. He had had enough of the environment in Europe, far less cozy than the life in British India.
One can’t blame Allen Wilson for being unaware, he was such a low-end person with no high-end thoughts in his head. At any moment, he was ready to return to British India and use his last two years to make a killing.
Once the Potsdam Conference was over, Allen Wilson was ready to operationalize the return to work in British India. In fact it was now that he was getting tired of these so-called important international meetings.
“Just now Advisor Churchill made a toast to Marshal Zhukov, and it seemed very amicable.” Ivor hadn’t thought about it so much, still in the atmosphere of a smooth negotiation.
“Oh?” Alan Wilson twitched as he thought about Churchill’s consistent stance on the Soviet Union, “Our advisor is stirring up relations between Marshal Zhukov and Stalin himself.”
It was no surprise that Zhukov, now the Soviet military chief in Germany, had also come here for a couple of audiences with Stalin at the time of the Potsdam Conference. The opportunity was seized by an anti-Soviet veteran like Churchill to lay a mine! One can only say that the British Empire still has a unique talent for stirring this up.
“By the way, it seems that Marshal Zhukov has proposed inviting Eisenhower to visit the Soviet Union.” Avril said one more thing, indicating that there was actually a lot going on in Potsdam today.
The decision to invite Eisenhower to visit the Soviet Union was made by Stalin himself after consulting with Zhukov. Although Truman was not like Churchill’s love of dissembling, it was entirely because Churchill himself loved to dissemble for reasons of his own character, and it did not mean that Truman was not hostile to the Soviet Union.
Stalin was convinced of the need to strengthen Soviet-American relations, and when he discussed with Zhukov about inviting Eisenhower to visit the USSR, Zhukov suggested that it would be appropriate for him to invite him to a sports festival during this sensitive period.
In Stalin’s view, a personal invitation by Zhukov would not be a political event, but a visit in the capacity of a military activist, and an embarrassing situation would be avoided due to conflicts between the countries. At the same time, through the two great powers commander-in-chief in the international influence, but also expressed a friendly, willing to improve the relationship between the two countries signal, can be said to be two birds with one stone.
Eisenhower has already agreed to Marshal Zhukov’s invitation and is expected to travel to the Soviet Union in August for a visit and exchange.
Allen Wilson in the backroom operation, and blackmail, and reasoning, and a Soviet woman as in the food market parents, the top of the countries from here its happy, make a have a good atmosphere. Alan Wilson cursed hypocrisy!
But this only proved that the countries still needed time to steer public opinion at home and delay the coming full-scale confrontation.
But then again, what event officially started the Cold War, Churchill’s Iron Curtain speech, the formation of NATO or McCarthy’s screwing around in America? That’s not really a question that’s easy to pin down.
Anyway, according to history as a reference, in the past two years several countries involved in the war did not have that energy to find trouble with each other, adjusting domestic production and policies, and felt ready to go into battle with bare arms only when the time came.
“Allen, back from Berlin.” Alexander Cadogan saw Allen Wilson come back and asked in a know-nothing tone, “How are things being handled in Berlin.”
“Executive Undersecretary, it’s fine.” Allen Wilson nodded with a smile, indicating that everything was fine. It was as if he had really gone out to do something else and missed the Potsdam meeting.
Acknowledging Allen Wilson’s friend in the middle of nothing, Alexander Cadogan nodded and said, “Go to Sir’s room and take a look.”
“Yes!” Alan Wilson nodded politely and bid farewell to the hall to go upstairs.
Edward Bridges stayed alone in his room, as if the bustle outside had nothing to do with himself, but belonged to the young man’s business, and was not the least bit surprised by Alan Wilson’s arrival, stretching out his finger to point to the seat in front of him, and waited for the arrival to sit down before he opened his mouth to say, “Wasn’t it a great surprise at everything that has happened today.”
“Yes there are some!” Alan Wilson sat down in a formal manner and waited for Edward Bridges to ask.
“Our Prime Minister feels that the objective has been achieved and that the most important thing in front of us is the return of normalcy on the mainland as soon as possible, which is of course a good thing, but perhaps for some people there are two sides to this story.” Edward Bridges spoke slowly, “If British India were to become independent the civilization and rule of law of the British Empire would be hit hard and that’s something no one wants to see, I’ve done my best to maintain order but it looks like the Prime Minister has made up his mind.”
“Wow vomit! This is a tragedy.” Alan Wilson was sweating a little, the contrast between these two Prime Ministers really tested the hearts and minds of civil servants, the former Churchill running around, busy laying mines and picking fights. The current Prime Minister, Adderley, on the other hand, is focusing on the country and is ready to turn both ears to what’s going on outside the window.
“The people of British India need to be ready.” Edward Bridges said with intent, “I believe that the civil servants of British India are examples of the hard work and loyalty of the British Empire. But we have to look at the worst possible scenario, there are not so many national jobs on the mainland to take them on, what would you do if it were you?”
“I would find a way to go to another colony.” Alan Wilson paused to give his answer, “Without adding to the tight employment situation on the mainland.”
“Good, if only most people thought like you do.” Edward Bridges sighed, “I’ll take a steady, moderated approach to buy as much time as I can. But those liberals of the Prime Minister believe that British India has more invested than it has gained, and that it should be withdrawn at the earliest opportunity. You are the only man in Potsdam who has had any experience in India, and perhaps the Prime Minister will think of asking you about India, and you should understand how to answer.”
