Chapter 1260 Future Challenges
While the United States was certainly unhappy with France’s behavior, to take any categorical steps, Washington was not sure what would happen. The American ambassador to a point really had an idea, but not for France.
“Sir Wilson, in fact, Washington desperately needs, Britain to take a common position with the United States on a matter.” Donald’s face was solemn and his tone unheard of.
“With the special relationship between Britain and America, there is nothing that cannot be said.” Alan Wilson’s heart sank, thinking that the United States must be holding back bad blood somewhere.
“If, and I mean if, the Shah of Pahlavi expels the unconscionably large diplomatic staff in Iran. We hope that Britain will side with the United States when the time comes.” Donald spoke rather solemnly.
“Just be afraid it might inflame the situation, northern Iran has been infiltrated by the Soviet Union for years. I mean, there could be a risk of civil war.” Alan Wilson replied with a grave expression on his face.
To be honest, no one understands Iran better than he does, after all, this is one of the countries …… he personally betrayed, and knows that today Allen Wilson has no regrets. A country exists in the United States and the Soviet Union two forces are afraid of each other, this is not good?
The United States and the Soviet Union, wide-eyed, better than two countries distance produces beauty, put the excess attention elsewhere.
Using Iran as a chessboard for the US and the USSR to spend time on is not a bad thing for Britain, but it is clear that the US does not want to continue in this way, but rather find a way to drive the USSR out.
This is not impossible, as Iran is a united country and the Shah Pahlavi is the rightful ruler, and it makes perfect sense that he would expel Soviet infiltration in the north in order to ensure the sovereign integrity of Iran.
In fact, there was little the Soviet Union could do in the face of such anti-Soviet behavior. They couldn’t even keep them out, and Allen Wilson recalls the example of Egypt’s transformation from a pro-Soviet state to a neutral U.S.-favored state during the Sadat era, knowing that at that time there were 4,000 Soviet advisers in the Egyptian army at the same time, and that the Soviet advisers had been decentralized to battalion and company level, and that it could be argued that the whole of the Egyptian army was under Soviet influence.
But when Sadat ordered the expulsion of the Soviet advisors and the end of the relationship between the Egyptian army and the Soviet Union, the Soviet Union had no choice but to withdraw the thousands of military advisors in the Egyptian army.
Actually, to be honest, was control of the Suez Canal important? No less important than the Persian Gulf in the Middle East, the USSR would not fail to recognize that, control of the Suez Canal is a pinch on the throats of European countries. It was a huge increase in manufacturing costs for the industrialized nations of Western Europe, but the Soviet Union still evacuated thousands of military advisors who were in the Egyptian army.
It can only be said that in the case of the United States and the Soviet Union, both countries are still really quite a bottom line, but instead, the Cold War is over, one more than the other to refresh the bottom line. The victor is more and more shameless, the loser is more and more rogue. That’s why the US expulsion of Soviet influence in Iran might have worked.
If the U.S. has already greeted the Pahlavi king to protect Iran, and the Pahlavi dares to think and act, the Soviet Union’s, if not withdrawn, may start a wave of anti-Soviet wave in Iran, and furthermore can even create a proxy war against the Soviet Union to bleed the Soviet Union, like an actor’s country.
For a moment, Alan Wilson was confused by the situation he had created with his own hands. Could there be two proxy wars at the same time, one in the Middle East and the other in Southeast Asia?
If this happens, the cabinet secretary-general also feels that his brain cells are not enough, if there are two large-scale proxy wars at the same time. The world would be a completely strange place!
Alan Wilson had never wanted the world to become too unfamiliar, he wanted to be able to profit Britain in the midst of a roughly unchanged historical pattern, too unfamiliar a historical direction, and he was afraid of it.
“Secretary General, what does the Prime Minister mean?” Donald asked again when he saw that Alan Wilson had been silent for a long time.
“It’s a matter I’ll inquire about when I get a chance. Certainly patience on Washington’s part is required.” Allen Wilson came back to his senses and assured with a mouthful of words, “It’s just that the Middle East is after all different from the others, and as the UK definitely wants to have enough certainty in advancing, intelligence work becomes extremely important. The existing conditions may still not be enough.”
Alan Wilson promised to help, and waited until the U.S. ambassador had gone before looking putty, the familiar history appeared strange, this feeling is very bad.
Now there are a couple possibilities, the Soviets put up with it in Iran and the US continues the Vietnam War.
Or the United States will still fight the Vietnam War, but the Soviet Union is also conducting military operations in Iran, once this consequence occurs, world peace is really threatened.
The third possibility is that the USSR can’t bear to go to war in Iran in the first place, and the US terminates the war in Vietnam instead, an outcome that would be most untenable for Britain.
In fact the prospects for the second possibility are also poor, with the Soviet Union fighting Iran and the United States fighting Vietnam, with each of the two wars being fought on its own, and the risk of a world war increasing dramatically.
Only the first, or a combination of the first and the second, with the Soviet Union either unresponsive or slow to respond, would the situation be relatively less bad, at least until after the Vietnam War had begun while the United States was busy threatening Pahlavi, which, in short, should have defused the immediate crisis.
It must be admitted that Alan Wilson was in a muddle, he was thinking about Britain’s current national strength, once the United States was left to its own devices, would Britain be able to compete with the Soviet Union, at least in one direction? And if Britain couldn’t do it on its own, could it do it with the addition of France?
It is early 1964, and because the Algerian War has been over for less than two years, and is in a high-pressure plateau, France’s military looks quite large, and the size of the French army, though not as large as it was during the Algerian War, is still eight hundred and fifty thousand active soldiers.
Britain’s visionary disarmament plan is to cut the size of the British army by five hundred and ninety-five thousand, a figure that refers to the size of soldiers on British soil and doesn’t actually count soldiers raised in Nepal, Malaya, and the South Pacific.
Even if it is disarmed to less than 600,000 scale, plus these colonial troops, Britain can pull out 700,000 or 800,000 armed forces, Britain and France together, equivalent to two-thirds of the size of the U.S. Army, it seems to pass, if placed in Iran, can play to let the Soviet Union don’t act rashly effect?
Funny enough, before the US ambassador was talking about Iran, he was there suggesting that the US should go heavy on France, now it occurs to me that the military strength of France’s allies and the UK combined could have made the USSR look high and mighty.
If it weren’t for Germany’s status as a defeated nation, he’d want to add the Germans to the list, and there are still the Heilmanns’ interests in Iran.
“What are you afraid of? A nuclear war is still on the table?” A head of pulp Allen Wilson did not want to, not just smash the pot, anyway, he is a naked official, fight is not afraid. The most is to notify the ladies of equal status with his wife, hiding to Australia.
With his ordinary brain can not deduce a foolproof plan, want to calculate the percentage of the risk of war, without a supercomputer is certainly not.
Alan Wilson was so upset that he took the playing cards straight out of his pocket, closed his eyes and drew one, and after work he was ready to have a good chat with his sister-in-law to relieve the bitterness in his heart.
“I’m pregnant.” Princess Margaret’s first words made Alan Wilson even more bitter, “Does Turing know?”
“What’s the use of him knowing, what’s the difference between him and me except that he can stand conveniently?” Princess Margaret gave the man a blank look, as if mocking the fact that such a question was even asked.
“That’s not what I meant, the point is that he is your husband after all, and it’s natural to assume that if you’re pregnant it must be his child.” Alan Wilson looked at his sister-in-law’s face and hastened to find a way to make up for it, “I actually want this child to be born, Margaret, I’m just afraid that there are pressures that shouldn’t be carried by a child that are coming on to our child.”
This way was still like human speech! Princess Margaret calmed down a little and said bitterly, “But you know that Turing and I have nothing at all to do with each other, and it won’t be easy to get him to recognize this child.”
“It can’t be that hard, everyone’s an adult.” Alan Wilson opened his mouth and said, “But only if you have a verbal commitment with her, it’s not appropriate for me to step in with my status.”
Although the Cabinet Secretary General thought that he had recreated Turing, but this kind of thing who knew what Turing thought, it would not be good for him to step in in case the negotiation fell apart. It was still appropriate to give his sister-in-law some pointers behind the scenes, so that Her Highness and Turing could have a good talk.
Princess Margaret muttered with dissatisfaction, “Looking ahead when it comes to this time, there was no hesitation at all when undressing someone.”
This belongs to the defilement of the cabinet secretary general, even now, Elu Wilson as well will not hesitate, but Her Highness pregnancy temper tantrums, he this time will not and Princess Margaret general understanding.
Princess Margaret also felt that her brother-in-law was not in the right state, and inquired what had happened, “You just look annoyed, where did something happen?”
“The U.S. wants to expel the Soviet forces in northern Iran, which could cause a conflict.” Alan Wilson a boneless look a paralyzed, holding his forehead helplessly, “and you explain to you also do not understand, now in a major event at the juncture, the future may be very favorable to the United Kingdom, but out of this matter may turn to unfavorable. There is still care to be taken to deal with it.”
It seemed sensible to keep Philby now, there were some inconvenient times when some exchange of information could take place, and since it was about to make trouble in Iran, it was perfectly normal to send out MI6 to clarify Iranian intelligence information, wasn’t it? The loyalty of foreign agents has always been a top priority, and the head of MI5 to emphasize it is also normal.
“The United States is now very worried about the collapse of the dominoes, and it seems to have tolerated the situation in South Vietnam rotten to the limit.” Alan Wilson, with his hands in his pockets looking worried about the country, said to several intelligence heads, “How to respond is very important for the future of the UK.”
