Chapter 1271 Galileo
U.S. President Lyndon Johnson made a public televised speech ordering retaliatory strikes against the North Vietnamese regime. Immediately thereafter, sixty-four U.S. bombers entered North Vietnamese airspace and bombed Nghi An, Hung Ky and Thanh Hoa indiscriminately.
The day after the U.S. bombing of North Vietnam, U.S. President Johnson submitted a message to the U.S. Congress asking for permission to use U.S. armed forces to counter the North Vietnamese attacks, to protect “freedom and peace” in Southeast Asia, and to protect South Vietnam and Laos.
Three days after the Gulf of Tonkin incident, Congress passes the Gulf of Tonkin Accord, which authorizes Lyndon Johnson to take command of the U.S. military and to take all necessary measures to crush the North Vietnamese armed attack.
At Monroe’s home, Alan Wilson, in the manner of a successful man, cradled in Marilyn Monroe’s arms, watched President Lyndon Johnson’s speech in defense of America and the free world on television. The Cabinet Secretary was all smiles, listening with rapt attention.
It was a restrained smile on his part; Monroe was an American, and it was not good for him to write his delight on his face too much, in case the beautiful woman in his arms saw it.
“Another war.” Monroe muttered unhappily, Marilyn Monroe had been to Korea to labor in the army and at this point deeply resented the outbreak of another war.
“That’s the way the world is.” Allen Wilson ran his hand down Monroe’s neck and grasped the haunting peaks and spoke with a sense of accomplishment, “It reminds me of the Boer War, oh, I’m not saying America would have lost, just a boring metaphor. Maybe that’s life, some times it just happens.”
Alan Wilson would never have answered like that if he had been confronted with Aidan, but he had now to take care of his American guest’s feelings, and must not take it for granted that, because Monroe was in his own shape, he could do what he pleased.
Each was an individual, and with ladies of equal status with their wives, it was Allen Wilson, not them, who would change, if the truth were told.
“You’re just an officer, talking like you know what you’re doing.” Marilyn Monroe, who was being kneaded, gave the man an unflattering look, “It seems Vivian is just drowning in your lust.”
“Is that a compliment? And I won’t deny that I think I know the world.” Alan Wilson gave a double entendre of self-praise while answering both of Monroe’s questions, “If it weren’t for you, maybe my life wouldn’t be so exhausting, but I’d rather be exhausting. It’s all worth it just to lead you to blossom more perfectly.”
The same face one thing, in different occasions will express different views, things have two sides, in 10 Downing Street, facing the Prime Minister Aidan, and and closely related to the international situation of the Foreign Secretary Rabo Butler, Defense Secretary Profumo, Alan Wilson’s answer is completely different.
“We’ve expressed our concern about the current situation, through our ambassador to the United States, but apparently the Americans haven’t recognized it. London did not succeed in stopping the Korean War over a decade ago. Nor will it stop the Americans from entering the next war now.” Alan Wilson, with a grave expression on his face, reported the latest on the current situation.
“Washington’s idea is very rash.” Aiden asserted straight away, “We can’t understand why there is such a drastic reaction from the US.”
“Unlike Britain, where we lead the world through checks and balances, the United States, like the Soviet Union, wants to lead the world itself. Whether it’s the US or the USSR, both of them think they have the ability to do this and don’t need the cooperation of their allies. Of course if the war goes on for years and years, I’m sure at some point the US will express a desire for Britain to enter the war.”
Alan Wilson wouldn’t dare say that not a single person from the whole of the UK had fought in the Vietnam War, and may have helped in some of the smaller operations, but definitely no formed armed forces had been sent into the war. This is undoubtedly, the United Kingdom heel did not find any point from South Vietnam to participate in the war directly value.
“Alan, do you think the United States will run into trouble this time?” Profumo inquired with a serious look on his face, “You know the Orient well, do you think the Chinese will support North Vietnam’s recalcitrance to the end.”
“Honorable Minister, that is obvious. It was proven in the middle of the Korean War.” Alan Wilson shook his head and smiled bitterly, “Although they are currently experiencing some problems, they are definitely not affected to the extent that they are unable to provide support for North Vietnam. Of course, we hope that the Americans will be able to contain the dire situation in Southeast Asia without any problems, and that everything will go well.”
For the time being, Lyndon Johnson is afraid to send troops directly to South Vietnam for a major fight, not out of fear of the North Vietnamese, but because the U.S. election has not yet come to fruition. Once Lyndon Johnson is officially confirmed for re-election, I believe that the American soldiers will be instrumental in setting off. The U.S. will have at least a few more months to prepare.
Unsurprisingly, the US will try one more time with the UK to persuade the UK to send in troops, but the UK will certainly not agree, and the UK will have to join forces with Australia to adopt a policy of isolation against Indonesia.
If some other assistance is desired, the UK could open up Singapore for some logistical support. A brief stopover by the US Navy is fine, setting up a military base is not.
These proposals, also recognized by Aidan and the two cabinet ministers, after all, the Conservative Party’s position is not stable, once the ambiguous attitude towards this war, the Labour Party will not just watch from the sidelines.
The leader of the Labor Party in the original history, are supposed to have completed the transition from the opposition party to the ruling party. Because Allen Wilson is there, the other Wilson is not sitting in the position of prime minister now, think about it, the cabinet secretary-general feels guilty in his heart.
Until the American GIs officially arrived in South Vietnam, there was still no big change in South Vietnam; the South Vietnamese generals were continuing to implode and persecute the Buddhists; the politicians still had no real power; the religious insisted on demonstrating and protesting in the streets, and without the North Vietnamese presence, the clans all over South Vietnam themselves would probably have fought first.
On the British side, there was a project underway with France for a model of European unity; that’s the way the relationship between Britain and France was, tripping over each other, but limited by the general circumstances when it was time to cooperate.
This project was proposed to France through the Diamond Ambassador, George Black. It can be considered George Black’s biggest achievement so far in the position of ambassador to France.
The main purpose of the project is to establish Europe’s own global positioning system (GPS), modeled after the U.S. For Britain and France, which have not declined to the end, the role of GPS is still very significant.
France’s traditional sphere of influence in Africa and Britain’s concern in the direction of Asia all require such a system, and the two countries have a basis for cooperation.
The global positioning system now operating in space is not the famous gps of later generations, but the United States of America’s meridian satellite positioning system.
Meridian satellite positioning system, that is, “Meridian” satellite, is the U.S. Navy developed the Doppler frequency measurement system satellite navigation system of the space part, also known as the Navy Satellite Navigation System, is the world’s first satellite navigation system, through the broadcast of radio navigation signals for the U.S. various types of submarines and surface ships to provide non-continuous 2D navigation positioning It is also used for offshore oil exploration and marine survey positioning, land user positioning and geodesy.
Currently this system serves the U.S. Navy, set in the United Kingdom, Mountbatten can not look at his favorite Navy nothing, if you borrow the U.S. system, but there may also be hidden problems. Naturally, the matter was referred to the Cabinet Secretary in Whitehall for assessment, and in this way the cooperation of France was offered.
Alan Wilson trusted France more than he trusted Britain in terms of independence, and after six months of negotiations, including a series of disputes and naming rights, Britain and France each took a step back, with Alan Wilson suggesting that the system be named after the Italian astronomer Galileo, to which the French agreed.
In July, with the U.S. election heating up while concern over the situation in South Vietnam reached its zenith, British Foreign Secretary Rab Butler signed a cooperation agreement in Paris on behalf of Britain. Britain and France were to cooperate fully and intensively on the Global Positioning System (GPS) to secure space sovereignty for Europe.
The name Galileo, a renaming of the ill-fated system of the European Union in later times, has favorable aspects; not counting the Soviet Union, the only European countries with satellite launch capabilities are Britain and France. In fact, this system relies on the UK and France for launching.
At this point in time, the European Community, unlike the European Union in later years, to make any one thing requires dozens of countries to argue first. It is more efficient for two countries to say what they want than for twenty-seven countries to discuss it.
Britain entered the space club a few years earlier than France, naturally a few more years of reserves, hand pinch some well-positioned orbits, the value of such orbits, is part of the reason why the past few months Britain and France constantly tug of war.
Britain wants France to recognize the value of these orbits, and frankly, to benefit Britain. The French are clearly less inclined to favor Britain.
But with the Meridian Satellite Positioning System having been gradually completed, the French eventually made concessions to demonstrate Anglo-French solidarity and purchased the orbits Britain occupied during its brief period as the second space power.
“My friend, there is no one better suited to lead Europe in space than you, the President of the Royal Interplanetary Society.” Alan Wilson hadn’t seen Turing for a long time, and this time he reappeared, immediately mingling with his old friend again, “We want this system to do two things, be civilian, be free of charge, and be primarily for the benefit of society. Bringing the fruits of technological advancement to thousands of households, rather than limiting it to the military field.”
As a veteran white john, Alan Wilson had a penchant for gimmicks like free, and he was certain that most people did. And the only way to promote it faster is to make it free.
“I’m sure I’ll do my best.” Turing had little to say in favor of the idea, “Seeing technology come into millions of homes will make my work more motivating.”
