Chapter 1583 – The Landing
The defeat of the air force, which was capable of posing a threat to Britain and was Argentina’s most combat effective, cleared the way for the landing operation, as did the huge logistical challenge of supplying at least 100,000 troops and their equipment and supplies over a period of several days.
It was a very difficult task. If Galtieri had been informed of the plan, he would not have believed it could be accomplished.
So the bombing had to continue, to blow up what little war potential Argentina had left, and with the Argentine Air Force no longer an obstacle, the RAF and Naval Air Force shifted the focus of their attacks to civilian installations, power stations, broadcasting stations, and other important livelihood facilities.
Although the Argentine capital was a coastal city and was unlikely to become a quagmire, it was also necessary to prevent the emergence of a so-called people’s war, and the removal of civilian installations would prevent the Argentine government from mobilizing its potential popular forces.
Typhoon fighters from the Falklands and Tierra del Fuego covered the Vulcan bombers, while Rafale fighters from the Queen Victoria class carriers continued to maintain a high intensity of bombing, and the British Foreign Office repeated its own terms of the armistice while hitting back at the barbs of a number of hostile countries.
A Land Rover came to a stop in front of the church, Elisabeth Hurley pushed open the door and glanced at the church before waiting for Arnold to come down, “Is this the place?”
“If this is the nearest church, this is it. I can’t talk to you about my father’s habits. Serious, and not so serious.” Arnold searched carefully for words and finally gave up on the explanation pulling the hand of Elisabeth Hurley towards the church.
“Seriously? And not so serious?” Yin Lisa Bai Hurley muttered in a small voice, she was tempted to say that she knew that wording very well, Arnold gave her that feeling, claiming to like herself without showing how much he cared, a doubt she didn’t dare to ask, changing the subject, “It’s hard to imagine that the cabinet secretary-general would be in an economic predicament.”
“Because this predicament is fake, father is most concerned about this kind of superficial work, nothing to donate to nursing homes and orphanages.”
Arnold couldn’t help but burst out laughing, “Just like this visit to the church, he hasn’t been to the church at all as far as I can remember, with the possible exception of himself and when he attended the wedding.”
Not to say that it is still a son, Alan Wilson came to the church is purely temporary, landing operations are about to begin, may not be like the confrontation between the Navy and Air Force so one-sided, in the United Kingdom this acreage, God his old man is not he this Cabinet Secretary General tube, but the battlefield is far away from Latin America, believe once is no harm.
When Arnold walked in with the lady of the moment who was his wife’s equal, Alan Wilson was praying, or bargaining, devoutly to the cross directly above him, “You see I saved 200,000 Slavic lives in 1945, averted a million dollar massacre in Southeast Asia in 1965, and four Middle East wars turned into two. Saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda, that’s how many people I’ve saved, and I donate to orphanages and nursing homes every month.”
“There’s no denying that it may not have been done as well as it could have been in some places, but all in all you’ve earned it, and I only have one small wish, that this current one-sided war continues to go well the rest of the way.”
Arnold two people are far away, do not know that the supreme authority is Bibi chao and God bargaining, and by the way, also divided the territory, reiterated the principle of Britain I say, the rest of the place your old man said. Isn’t there a saying, what’s God’s is God’s.
Only when the prayers were finished did Arnold come over and listen to his old father complain, “Before Albert came back, it looked like I was doomed to be homeless, who would have thought your mother would be so serious this time.”
“It’s okay, I’ll keep a close eye on my mother, there’s no way any male creature is going to be in the house, even a dog would have to be cut up before going in.” Arnold acted loyal and reliable in front of his father, then lowered his voice, “Besides, it’s not like you don’t have anywhere to go, father, right.”
“I’m your father, how do you talk?” Alan Wilson slanted a glance at his son, then sighed, “Actually, I know that God, his old man, can’t help much, it’s not even as good as trying to work hard on my own, but people get sentimental in their old age, and once Galileo confirms that Argentina’s chain of command is completely paralyzed, and that they can’t organize a decent line of defense, the landings will begin.”
Arnold stood in awe, with that attitude, God his old man really didn’t have to help, “I’m sure it’ll all work out fine, it’s not like my brother has to go charging in.”
Britain’s two hundred ocean-going merchant ships, held up this supply line across the Atlantic Ocean, keeping the scout planes in cruise status every hour, and Galileo navigation in space, sending the latest intelligence to the base camp.
In the midst of thirty-three days of air raids, the Royal Air Force and Naval Air Service made sure to confirm the destruction of every strategic target that could be found.
Since many targets, such as communications centers and airfields, were fixed, the latest revised air campaign plans were more concise and predictable than the ground campaign plans.
The Tornado GR4 fighter-bomber had an important role to play in this round of bombing. While the Vulcan strategic bombers could not be deployed as often as they should be, the Tornado GR4 fighter-bomber was much more versatile, and like a brush to find hidden dirt, the Tornado GR4 fighter-bomber was suited to ultra-low altitude bombing.
The presence of such fighters in large numbers in the skies over Argentina was in itself an indication that Argentina’s air defenses had been destroyed.
The Argentine leader, President General Galtieri, was due to make a radio speech. He harshly condemned the British attack, “Hypocritical and criminal Britain has committed inhuman massacres against the Argentines and owes a great debt of blood to the Argentine people… Now the bloody war has begun. We, the Argentine people, shall return the enemy’s blows twice as hard, and make brave sacrifices in defense of our country and our just cause!”
The speech was very stern, but Galtieri now could not guarantee that his speech was known to all Argentines, in the succession of air raids, Argentine radio stations were also the focus of air raids, even if the Argentines who could hear General Galtieri, the high morale of the earlier occupation of the Falkland Islands, but also by the air defense sirens that sounded from time to time, was washed away.
Argentine society as a whole was frustrated, disoriented, bewildered, like rats hiding in a sewer, praying that the British precision strikes would be justified.
Of course it was, but with tens of thousands of tons of bombs a day, even a maritime power like Britain really couldn’t afford it, and enlisting its own ocean-going fleet to support such a long front was something only Britain was capable of at the moment, and Japan might have been able to do it as well, but Japan didn’t have the offensive capability.
With a triumphant smile on his face, the RAF spokesman said, “Now, there is good news for you all. As you all know, finding fixed defensive positions is easy easy easy, but finding mobile units is like finding a needle in a haystack. You can well imagine this. This morning, during the same time that the RAF was sending out, we found at least eight other air defense positions in the same area. We are attacking these targets. It has now been confirmed that these targets have been destroyed. We are continuing to attack the remaining targets. Therefore, I assure you that unless the attacks cannot be carried out due to climatic reasons, we will carry out the attacks relentlessly until they are all completely destroyed.”
Meanwhile, the weather in Argentine waters was shown by meteorological satellites to be in the midst of a steady state for the next few days, and as soon as this information had been conveyed to the command at the front, the Expeditionary Force Command decided to initiate the landing operations, almost two months having elapsed since the Argentine seizure of the Falkland Islands.
Convoys of heavy tanks, armored vehicles, and trucks transporting supplies stretching for miles were being loaded on board the various units in Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands in order to wait for the start of a large-scale ground operation once the air raids had been decisively won.
The British, in the final phase of bombing, concentrated on targets such as roads, bridges, oil depots and reservoirs.
The purpose was to cut off transportation lines such as railroads and roads, to destroy fuel supply and storage facilities, to attack their rear support facilities, and to cut off their supply lines so that the Argentine army could not gather and replenish oil, water, ammunition, and troop strength.
This was also to prevent the Argentines from causing trouble to the British landing operations, and although the Argentine coastline was long and landing sites abounded where Britain could find them, it was clear that this was not the time to conserve ammunition in the interest of prudence.
On July 10, while the high intensity of bombing continued, landing forces from Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands began landing operations aboard naval landing craft as scheduled, and later in the day Belfast strategic transports flew through Argentine airspace to conduct airborne operations north of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires.
The Argentine defense system, which had been served by graphite bombs and anti-radiation missiles in turn, had collapsed a long time ago, and still relied on the intelligence of some extraterritorial powers to learn that the British were about to invade Argentine soil.
“No, absolutely not, Nancy, would I lie to my friends, Britain just wanted to prove the determination to defend the territory, but Caltieri has not responded, what can we do? We can only change our previous combat objectives, what I can guarantee is that the war will be over soon.”
Alan Wilson made a solemn promise to Reagan’s wife on the other side of the phone, a promise he made to his good friend Reagan that did not in any way conflict with the fleets already approaching the landing sites.
The harbors of La Plata and Mar del Plata, were the ones that had suffered the brunt of the British cruise missile attacks, and off the harbor of La Plata, the fifteen-inch main guns of the USS Mountbatten’s Marshal, finally showing their usefulness for the first time since their construction had been completed, the landing forces sprinted toward the shoreline under the cover of the battleship’s main guns, which felt safe and secure.
