Chapter 27: Bombay
There was nothing to be happy about, nothing to be unhappy about! Alan Wilson simply felt that these times held great promise, that was all.
Although it was rather unlucky to catch the British Empire in the process of decline, the collapse of order inevitably brought opportunities that were once rare, and if he wanted to go into business, he could easily make a good living, but he just didn’t want to do so, and preferred to be a humble social utility in the service of this country.
And then again, what capitalist by name has not risen to power through political favors? The whole world to can’t say that the man who crushes all difficulties by himself doesn’t exist.
This is not in accordance with the objective laws of development. Even in a tight and big filter, there are always some fish that slip through the net.
But who says that the two are incompatible? Alan Wilson tugged on Pamela Mountbatten’s coat, pondering for a moment.
“By the way, you once said that you were a student of the Oriental College and didn’t graduate because of the outbreak of the war. Hey, how old were you then?” Pamela Mountbatten remembered at once, Allen Wilson had once said his resume.
“That’s not a big deal, geniuses are also born from ordinary people.” Allen Wilson brushed off his resume, the corners of his mouth curling up but putting on a smug look.
“You look just like my father.” Pamela Mountbatten bristled with disgust, “Can’t you be like me and keep a level head with anyone?”
“Maybe I really can’t appreciate the easy-goingness embodied by your father who was born into a prince’s family and your mother who was born into the richest family in England, and even more so, I can’t understand how much my father, who was the Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Forces in Southeast Asia, and my mother, who was commanding 60,000 medics in support of the front line, had to work hard.” Alan Wilson cocked his head with a face full of knowledge, “But I’m ready to return to London, and in the meantime, I’d like to have Pamela’s help here.”
Reaching out and patting Allen Wilson’s shoulder, Pamela Mountbatten said with a look of being wrapped up in me, “Just leave it all to me.”
Allen Wilson blankly glanced at the other party, stretching out his fingers to clip the girl’s small hand, placing it in front of himself, the other hand obediently took it out from the inside of his pocket, placing it on Pamela Mountbatten’s hand, “The size is still appropriate!”
A sapphire ring appeared on Pamela Mountbatten’s finger, and the latter was embarrassed, “What’s this for, why do you always give me gems.”
“A souvenir only, I have some things to carry with me when I return to London this time, and my father has some personal effects to ship which may be a nuisance.” Alan Wilson made the request with a somewhat saddened brow.
“Is it a large quantity?” Ignoring her thumping heart for the moment, Pamela Mountbatten softly inquired.
“Really is not small, the old man has the habit of collecting local ancient books, transportation is quite troublesome, it is just that I go back this time to follow along with the transportation back, that are all his lifetime collection, I have the obligation to keep these ancient books.” Alan Wilson appeared to recall, in fact, it is less than twenty tons of things.
Because of the continuation of the war, the sea route is not safe, India’s Golden Temple proceeds have been placed in India, in fact, there is no good way, after all, it is the wealth of unknown origin, can not exist in the bank inside, and the father and son of British India’s bank is not very trustworthy, has been placed in New Delhi’s residence.
Allen Wilson directly took Pamela Mountbatten to the residence, of course, there are really some books, obviously Pamela Mountbatten is not very interested, said he was willing to help.
The daughter of the Commander-in-Chief of the Southeast Asia Theater of Operations is domineering, Allen Wilson gave the other party a silent nod in his heart.
To Hyderabad’s assistant, Allen Wilson telegram did not say that he was transferred, but only indicated that he was temporarily seconded to the mainland, which is also the meaning of the well-known appraiser Sir Barron, which is, after all, also a fact.
He might disappear for a while, but the Commissioner of Hyderabad was temporarily vacant, and before that the Commissioner of Hyderabad had been a position of high status, with generous but not very important benefits.
“How can you go to a man’s house alone?” Mountbatten looked his daughter up and down and said with a face full of helplessness, “I can understand that you are friends, but at your age it is slightly inappropriate.”
“Father, look at you, Alan is the Hyderabad Commissioner, an introverted civil servant who treats me with great respect.” Pamela Mountbatten had a sapphire ring on her hand and I wanted to make a trip to Bombay to watch him board the ship.
“Me?” Mountbatten was about to open his mouth when his face changed his mind and said, “I’ll send someone to take you there.”
“Alan’s father has a collection of items to be shipped back home with him, and I would like to have them transported back in my father’s name. Because there are a lot of ancient books.” Pamela Mountbatten pleaded further, and having received the go-ahead got up and went upstairs, “I am going to write a letter to my sister, and will give it to him to take back to London when the time comes, and to-morrow I am going with him to the country, and that is all for the present.”
For the present! Mountbatten thought for a moment that it would be just for the present, after which the other returned to Europe and would not be a bother.
“We’re better than these Indian children to give them charity like this.” Alan Wilson took Pamela Mountbatten’s hands and crossed them, the blue light flickering from his fingertips as he looked at the Indian children not far away.
Today the two came to the northern outskirts of the countryside, the so-called North Indian climate, it is not that winter does not exist, winter is as difficult, nothing more than a short winter, summer is long, from the last Hyderabad commissioner of three months, Delhi’s temperature has been step by step in the direction of intolerable.
“I’ve taken leave of my father to see you to Bombay when you leave.” Pamela Mountbatten looked back, ignoring the embellishments around her, and said softly, “Any difficulty with your assistant in Hyderabad, just contact me when the time comes.”
“Sweaty hands.” Taking out a handkerchief to wipe the sweat stains from Pamela Mountbatten’s hands, Alan Wilson said softly, “I’ll send you a telegram when I get back to London.”
“Telegraph me what.” Pamela Mountbatten pretends to be serious and refuses, “It’s as if you don’t have a job, this is my letter to my sister, you deliver it for me, and my mother has been in London for six months, take my regards.”
“Don’t worry.” Slapping his chest with a thud, Allen Wilson promised in a single breath.
To the day of departure, wasted nine oxen and two tigers, Allen Wilson on the train to Bombay, sitting next to Pamela Mountbatten asked suspiciously, “how the boxes are so heavy, the soldiers tired.”
“The boxes are iron. And paper, piled together is very heavy. It’s like whether a knife is sharp or not, you have to judge it from cutting the paper.” Allen Wilson glossed over the extraordinary weight with bullshit comparisons.
By the time they got to Mumbai, the freighter was already scheduled to leave the next day, Pamela Mountbatten looked at the busy harbor with interest, like she was tirelessly trying to walk along the beach, and Allen Wilson didn’t miss a beat by speaking up, “Actually, it’s the coastline of Junagadh Tupang that’s beautiful, I’ll take you to see it when I have a chance.”
