Chapter 29 India is a good place to live
“I was worried that Pamela was all unaccustomed to living in British India.” Patricia Mountbatten walked over to the sofa and sat down, followed by a crisp springing sound, which could only come from being compressed.
In his previous life when he was very small, Alan Wilson did see this kind of spring sofa, just did not expect to see it again has been in London.
“At present, the war in Asia is still uncertain, General Mountbatten is still in the middle of a busy time, as for Pamela is very comfortable.” Ellen Wilson organized the language, said a little bit of life in British India then said, “Pamela and I are friends, this time from British India back to London, she knows that she asked me to bring a letter, I believe that this letter is loaded with her thoughts about the two ladies.”
“As a mother, I should actually be there to look after her. But ambulance duty prevents me from going to India now.” Edwina Ashley read the letter as she held it and narrated helplessly.
Edwina Ashley was responsible for training the British ambulance force to mount battlefield rescues. It was the middle of the World War, and this force of medics numbered 60,000 people! That’s what Alan Wilson said, and he certainly couldn’t understand the Mountbattens’ even-handedness.
“Ma’am, when I disembarked I heard that a decisive battle had been won in the European theater, and I believe that in a short time the citizens of the British Empire will be greeted with the news of the final victory, and then you may not be so busy.” Alan Wilson bowed his head slightly and said politely.
“I hope so!” Edwina Ashley smiled and nodded her head, because of her daughter’s letter, she was in quite a good mood, and chatted with Alan Wilson a little more, inquiring about the situation in British India, “You’ve been working in British India for not a short time now, and what a place it is.”
The fact that Edwina Ashley didn’t know anything about British India was a surprise to Alan Wilson, in other words, the other person might not have known Nehru?
Ahem! How could one think of Nehru? But so what if he thought of it? He had returned to Europe because of Nehru, in that case?
Clearing his throat Allen Wilson’s brow wrinkled slightly, as if he had something difficult to say, his face ugly, “In fact, the environment in British India is not as calm as the telegram said. Certainly not in New Delhi, and as I was previously working in Hyderabad, South India, I can give a little insight into Indian society outside of New Delhi.”
“Are things bad in British India?” Patricia Mountbatten asked with some concern as soon as she saw the expression.
“The British settlement in New Delhi is fine, the upper class of India itself is fine, but in terms of India as a whole, it’s really an extremely cutthroat society, people with no clothes and not enough to eat are everywhere. There would be frequent vendettas because of religion, and the upper class of Indian people seemed mild-mannered but oblivious to the misery of a wide range of people.”
As soon as Alan Wilson opened his mouth to speak, his mouth had a tendency to close, and he buried British India up and down, especially doing so deliberately in front of Edwina Ashley, literally comparing British India to a big thatched pit, which was not a metaphor, it was meant to be.
Who let him do a good job as commissioner of Hyderabad’s native state, but Nehru had nothing to do but return to London with a pile of iron crates in his dust? This hatred is not shared, even without himself, the wealth of the Indian people will be squandered, Alan Wilson felt that it would be better to give to others than to himself.
“Even the areas in Delhi where the Indians live are in no order, and if we go by the words of the Administrator of Bengal, the Indians multiply like cockroaches no matter what time of day it is, even if they don’t even know where their next meal is.”
Allen Wilson, who had the idea that this enmity was not to be shared, told Pamela Mountbatten’s sister and mother directly the truest aspect of British India.
“So it’s such a place, father is still working a little hard there.” Patricia Mountbatten looked at her mother with some surprise, “It is fortunate that father and sister live in the British settlement, otherwise it is really unimaginable.”
“It was all on the good side of the telegraph.” Edwina Ashley was also a little taken aback, “I didn’t realize British India was such a place, I thought it was nice.”
“Respectfully ma’am, what is nice is simply the importance of British India to the British Empire due to the presence of a massive population, the use of cheap labor to produce agricultural products for the mainland as well as being a sales place for mainland industries. But this nice was held up by an unimaginable population, imagine British India with ten times the population of the mainland and only half the tax figures of the mainland to get an idea of what kind of life the natives lived, out of having worked in British India I am not inclined to speak of the life of the lowest class of people.”
After counting British India out, Alan Wilson said it wasn’t his intention to pass the buck.
“I’m really worried about my husband and daughter now.” Edwina Ashley guffawed and thanked Alan Wilson, “Pamela mentioned you in the middle of her letter, you’re friends, aren’t you? It’s amazing that you’re already a district commissioner.”
“It’s just work.” Alan Wilson wasn’t being modest, he had nothing to swell compared to a Great British Dragon Pride like Mountbatten.
As long as the first impression was created in front of the other party before Edwina Ashley had gone to India, stigmatizing British India, with this kind of mentality, even if Edwina Ashley arrived in India afterward, she would still go to seek confirmation of the real situation in British India.
Even so Allen Wilson still felt insufficient, almost forgetting the most important thing, seriously, “According to our statistics, the social environment in British India is particularly unfriendly to women, Indian men will stare at light-skinned women, ordinary Indian men are extremely narcissistic, self-conscious, and women talk with exaggerated expressions, speech and behavior is very frivolous, against the females is too common a crime, Pamela living in an English settlement doesn’t feel this, and similar things I’ve said to her before.”
“Surprise!” Edwina Ashley frowned tightly, already having a very bad opinion of British India. Along with Patricia Mountbatten, both of whom were women, were extremely offended by the environment.
In Alan Wilson mouth, British India is a poor and smelly, treat women like hell …… hell.
Directly before the two men even went to British India and joined up with Mountbatten, who was about to become the Viceroy of India, they stigmatized India.
After doing this Alan Wilson was so cool that he even wanted to give the middle finger in the direction of India, especially to Nehru.
