Chapter 32: A Friend Out of Nothing
Finding a way to send this civil servant, whom Mountbatten valued, to the soon-to-be-defeated Germany, to follow the Foreign Office’s foreign service, and the Americans’ allocation of Germany’s post-war work, which would surely fill Alan Wilson’s curriculum vitae, with a strong and colorful picture.
The wartime Cabinet was amazingly unanimous in its perception of Mountbatten, the noble-born commander of the Southeast Asian theater. Both the Prime Minister and the Foreign Office agreed that Mountbatten was irreplaceable in coordinating the joint operations of the multinational forces.
Mountbatten’s popularity, both among ministers and civil servants, was only the difference between good and better, and Anthony Aidan was happy to do a favor and arrange for the young civil servant to be put to work in a job suitable for gilding the lily.
Alan Wilson was a busy man, having just returned to London from his home in Mountbatten and reporting to the Indian Ministry, he became the liaison between the Indian Ministry and the Viceroyalty of British India.
But this was just what he needed, he just needed to liaise with British India so often, and accepted the job gladly. Snatching out his free time, he went straight to the Oriental College at Oxford University and retrieved his academic record, and although he had not yet determined when he would be able to graduate, with the impending calm on the battlefields of Europe, he was sure that day was not far off.
After taking care of his academic problems, Alan Wilson found an opportunity to go to the Royal Bank of Scotland to exchange some pounds, and then went to Mountbatten’s home and introduced himself as the current liaison officer for British India, so that if the mother and daughter wanted to contact their relatives in New Delhi, he could help.
Having received the gratitude of Mountbatten’s wife and daughter, Alan Wilson remained his usual polite and calm self and made a good impression on the mother and daughter.
A week after his return to London, Philby, who was still MI6, informed Alan Wilson that the Ministry of Indian Affairs had decided to second him to the Foreign Office, where he was still the Ministry’s liaison officer to British India, and that he was temporarily un-Foreign Office because the Foreign Office was now in a busy state.
“This is a surprise.” Alan Wilson asked, feigning ignorance, “Is the Foreign Office busy?”
“I heard that the Soviet Red Army is attacking very violently, so maybe Germany will surrender at some point. I have heard that there are indeed Germans privately contacting the Allies to surrender as well.” Philby mused for a moment and continued, “Once Germany surrenders, it will probably be even busier, the order of the occupied areas, communication with the local Germans and so on, and many other things.”
Pounds to less! Alan Wilson heard, the war has been fought to this point, Germany has run out of oil, what national economy is more has long been a total collapse, if you do not rely on external food, perhaps now eating is a problem.
Although the major participants in the World War, in addition to the United States there is no one day red-hot, but also to be divided into what degree of misery, London’s depression, compared to the devastated continent of Europe but too much stronger.
“This is a great tragedy.” Alan Wilson face solemn, tone solemn said, “Europe, the center of the world’s civilization, has been ravaged by two wars. I can even imagine the great difficulties the Germans are facing right now, and if I had the chance to help them, I would certainly be willing to set out immediately.”
While the two men were talking, the Battle of Berlin had actually begun for several days, and the Soviet Army had concentrated two hundred and seventy infantry and cavalry divisions, twenty tank and mechanized armies, fourteen air force groups, and a total of two and a half million troops in three front armies, including the Belarusian First and Second Front Armies and the Ukrainian First Front Army, and another two thousand and forty-four hundred aircraft, fourteen thousand artillery guns, and fifteen hundred tanks and self-propelled artillery guns were also assigned launched the Battle of Berlin.
The battle opened with an artillery barrage in which thousands of artillery pieces and Katyusha rockets began shelling German positions for days. Allied forces on the Western Front, including the United States, Britain, and France, were already acquiescing in the Soviet Red Army’s occupation of Berlin.
Having heard Philby’s words, Allen Wilson, for his part, knew that once Germany officially surrendered, he was pretty much on his way to Germany.
“In fact, this is a very good opportunity, I have to admit that I am even a little envious of you, among your appointments, there is the role of General Mountbatten, no matter whether it is the ministers of the wartime cabinet, or the civil servants of the various departments of General Mountbatten, are very recognized.” Seeing that Alan Wilson didn’t say anything, Philby spoke up, “But I have one thing to remind.”
“Reminder?” Allen Wilson froze, some can’t figure out the counter question, what needs special attention?
Philby laughed bitterly shaking his head slightly, “Alan, although the war will end soon, but it does not mean that the danger will disappear because of the end of the war, there may still be a lot of German soldiers in Germany who are not willing to surrender, these soldiers are equally dangerous, and the relationship between the Allied Forces and the Soviet Army on the Eastern Front is also somewhat delicate, you know for being the commissioner of the MI6, I do not want my friends to that fall into the eyes of some unidentified country.”
Oh? Alan Wilson nodded in understanding, don’t fall into the eyes of some unidentified countries? This unidentified country refers to the Soviet Union, right? He said in a long drawn out voice, “No way?”
He was a small Hyderabad commissioner, really admired Philby, in front of the man in the end how to do, in the allegiance of the British Empire at the same time, for the Soviets?
“Why not, our enemies are capable of anything.” Philby’s face was solemn and righteous, “I am the commissioner of MI6, I have to strengthen my vigilance, and at the same time, I don’t want you to be targeted, after all, you are my friend.”
Alan Wilson really wanted to ask, is that friend of yours talking about yourself? As for the MI6 commissioner, if you weren’t the MI6 commissioner, you wouldn’t have been able to cause that much damage to Britain.
But then again, Alan Wilson to go to Germany is not averse to, Germany is, after all, the old power, to go to the dung to pan for gold a bit, to find a little something, to the Indian soil state is also enough. Can also change a little extra money!
Let Allen Wilson upset is that a Soviet spy in front of their own eloquent what, allegiance to the British Empire.
It is intolerable! Allen Wilson lowered his head for a moment, as if he suddenly understood Philby’s words in general, “Yes, Germany’s war machine must have many technologies and talents that the allies need, I must snatch these talents as much as possible when I arrive in Germany.”
Philby’s eyes were stunned, he seemed to be very surprised by Allenwell’s words, and said in a peculiar tone, “You’re right, the allies will definitely search for these German military and industrial talents, I still have something to do, I’ll go back first.”
“Find a place to have a drink in the evening, I’ll also find some Foreign Ministry counterparts.” Looking at Philby’s hurried back, Alan Wilson called out and saw Philby, who hadn’t looked back, waving his hand. Instead, he looked up and blinked, he should be reporting to the Soviet Union, right?
