Chapter 37 Anglo-French Friendship
Arriving in Paris, Allen Wilson and his representatives abroad were faced with the problem of dividing the occupation zones as their first job. In the Yalta Conference, the future occupation of Germany was divided into three zones of occupation by the United States, Britain and the Soviet Union. However, in the ensuing discussions, the Soviets did not insist too much on the French zone of occupation in view of the fact that France still had a large number of colonies to support it.
Allen Wilson, the first thing to do is to talk to the United States and France to discuss the details of the establishment of the French Occupation Zone, and when, exactly, the occupation forces formally entered the issue of time.
Although it is believed that the negotiations between the Allies and the remnants of the German armed forces will soon show results, Germany’s surrender is close at hand is the matter of these days, but at present the German territory is still a big problem, not to mention that some diehard armed resistance is still in place. The severely damaged country alone cannot sustain the expenses of the occupation forces.
Through the front soldiers feedback statistics can be seen, Allen Wilson and other foreign representatives to see the cold data also can not help but inhale a breath of cold air.
Sixty-six percent of the homes in Cologne were destroyed; ninety-three percent of the homes in Düsseldorf were uninhabitable; eighty thousand out of one hundred and eighty thousand homes in Frankfurt were destroyed.
Of the five and a half million dwellings in the British-occupied areas, three and a half million were either completely destroyed or seriously damaged. Within German territory, of the original sixteen million dwellings, two million three hundred and forty-four million were destroyed, and more than four million were damaged by at least twenty-five percent.
Some of the Allied personnel who had been briefed on the destruction of the houses were at first surprised to see how many buildings were still standing when they first entered Germany. In fact, most of them were only a shell. Very few buildings in the big cities were unscarred, and in Hanover, less than one percent of the buildings were undamaged.
“According to the Expeditionary Commander’s statistics, ninety-three percent of the railroads in the British-occupied areas given to us at the Yalta Conference have been damaged, with less than a thousand kilometers of railroads in service and not connected to each other, which amounts to almost total inoperability.” Avril raised the document in his hand, and then placed it in front of Alan Wilson.
“I can’t believe it’s been destroyed like this, knowing that the Ruhr region is the heart of German industry.” Another foreign representative glanced at the statistics and sighed, “It’s good that this doesn’t become a huge burden.”
“The Germans had it coming.” Alan Wilson’s face didn’t change, he didn’t have much sympathy for the Germans. People themselves had to support the great Führer to fight for their country, they should be mentally prepared for the current outcome.
In the middle-second period he might have been influenced by Germany’s handsome uniforms and radical slogans. Now? Save your breath.
Even from the basic perspective of taking a beating and standing firm, the Germans had nothing to complain about. All mature industrial powers now, responsible for their own choices.
“It is undeniable that even for the convenience of the occupying forces, we need to get the railroads, bridges, and infrastructure in the occupied territories repaired.” Alan Wilson put the statistical data file aside, “Our British occupied zone is part of the essence of the German industrial zone, the good thing about it is that there are a lot of residual crafts and machines that might help the home front, the bad thing about it is that the British occupied zone is supposed to be the worst hit by the Allied air raids, i.e., it’s an asset and a nuisance.”
“Eh, Alan, I think the most important reason why the British Occupied Territories are so badly damaged is still the deep destruction ordered by Hitler as well as the German Commander-in-Chief, which really has very little to do with our Allied air raids.” Ivor corrected Alan Wilson without panicking, “We have reorganized evidence that the Germans are the source of all the difficulties now.”
“That’s right, that’s right. It was the Germans themselves who did this, and it had nothing to do with the Allies in the civilized world.” Reaching out and slapping his head, Allen Wilson instantly changed his attitude, regretting with a direct apology for the wrong viewpoint, which was of course the result of the Germans’ own scorched earth policy.
The great Allied forces in the midst of the war are strictly enforced iron discipline, regardless of the circumstances of the ordinary citizens of the fall without offense, even if there is a very small number of scum, but also does not detract from the Allied forces of the image of greatness.
Knock, knock! Accompanied by a knock on the door, a soldier pushed in and reported, “Mr. Allen, Mr. Avril, the French liaison has arrived to talk to the foreign representative who just arrived in Paris.”
“We’ll be right there!” Aifor responded, waiting for the soldier to leave his face is a change, “It must be about communicating about the French occupation, these French are always looking for trouble with us, we haven’t even rested yet. All the same as de Gaulle, not strong enough but one-sidedly maintaining the dignity of the so-called French people, it’s really annoying.”
“But we have no choice but to talk to them. The current situation is rather bizarre, especially in the midst of such aftermath cake-splitting negotiations, our allies’ roles may not be so fixed.” Alan Wilson shrugged his shoulders, also feeling helpless about this, “Unless we are ready to leave De Gaulle aside and talk to someone else, it is estimated that Stalin will be happy about this.”
In the current situation in France, who else can we talk to besides de Gaulle? The current number one party in France, the French Communist Party, of course!
Now France in addition to de Gaulle, there is no one can suppress the French Communist Party a chip, so even if de Gaulle and his supporters and then show unruly, Allen Wilson also have to endure, not to mention that they came to France’s foreign representatives, even if Roosevelt, Churchill, but also have to pinch their noses to respect de Gaulle, unless they want to talk to Red France.
The face of de Gaulle and supporters of the time, Britain and the United States are not the same, compared to the Americans, the British are really want to pull the French a hand, treat the French when also more sincere.
In the final analysis, both Britain and France were still pinching huge colonies in their hands, nominally the British Empire still had 3,000 square kilometers of colonies around the world, and France also had more than 10 million square kilometers of area.
It is the two overweening overlords of the last generation that should be on the same side in the face of the Soviet Union, which is clearly trying to liberate the world, or the United States, which is flying the flag of national self-determination.
“Nine hundred years of multiple wars with France and now we’re sitting together again.” Leaving the office, Allen Wilson and Aifor walked side by side, and by the time they walked outside the building, smiles had piled up on their faces as they took the initiative to reach out and shake hands with the French representative who had come over to them, and opened their mouths, “It’s so very kind of you to come, we’ve only just arrived.”
“Great allies come to Paris, wouldn’t it upset the gentlemen if we weren’t quicker?” The visitor responded with the same warmth, and the two groups greeted each other before hooking up and heading back into the building.
