Chapter 448: Combined Efforts
No resolution was reached on the matter of sending a peacekeeping force to Kashmir over the fierce objections of the Indian representative.
“But this matter, it’s okay to use it on top of the Palestinian-Israeli war, right?” After the meeting was adjourned, the U.S. representatives communicated with each other as they retired, and just now the matter of organizing a peacekeeping force was approved by most of the countries except India, and even one of the parties, Pakistan, was in favor of this.
“The India thing is still more problematic, we can’t afford to offend the biggest new country at the moment. It may allow the Soviets to take advantage of the situation and establish their influence in India, we have already sought confirmation through the British that Nehru was indeed a socialist, and once the United States takes a stand against India, this may lead to India falling back to the Soviet Union, which would not be good for American interests.”
“There is also a problem on the Palestinian-Israeli war side, although we pressurized London through diplomatic channels to give up supporting the Arab coalition, but Britain has been operating in the Middle East for a long time, and through the power of public opinion has told the Arabs all about Israel’s bottom. Now the Arab countries in the Middle East are highly demoralized and must drive the Jews, who have a population of only eight hundred thousand, overboard.”
The American delegates were discussing this as they went along, and their mouths were not free from admiration; the stirring tactics of the British Empire were really famous, and the United States could not attack unseen public opinion.
Though it is widely proclaimed in the Arab world that the U.S. was the first country to recognize Israel. The problem is that again this is not false, the US was indeed the first country to recognize Israel.
Furthermore the proclamation that Israel has a population of only 800,000 people, while definitely ill-intentioned, makes it difficult to catch and pressure. Because this is also a fact, except that this fact, made known to the Arabs was used on to galvanize the Arabs.
Instead as the number of Arab mobilized armies grew, the two periods of truce that were fought out didn’t seem to change the dilemma the Israelis faced.
Britain, in fact Alan Wilson, this operation of throwing bombs inside a latrine live on air, has really left the Americans with little to do.
“Let’s talk to the Soviets!” The words came out, several American diplomats nodded frequently.
Although as early as nineteen forty-three, it was a period when the Second World War had passed the peak of the military struggle, and politics had taken a greater share.
During this period, the blueprint for the post-war world devised by the United States was: “The establishment of a system of free tradeism on a world scale. The obstacles to this major policy goal were the flooding wave of social revolutions in the postwar period and the expansion of the Soviet sphere of influence.
The plan was to treat the Soviet Union as an enemy, but enemies are not uncooperative; the United States was the first to declare its recognition of the State of Israel. The Soviet Union was the second to recognize Israel. The interests of the United States and the Soviet Union were the same with regard to the nascent state of Israel.
This is evidenced by the fact that during the ceasefire, Israel received from Czechoslovakia large quantities of light weapons, artillery and ammunition. Regular airlifts were even organized from Prague to Rehovot. The airplanes were purchased from the United States. The diplomacy of American-Soviet coexistence was clearly demonstrated in the war in Palestine.
From the establishment of the state of Israel to the outbreak of the war, Washington and Moscow were in constant communication, taking a joint position in favor of Israel, and now the United States simply needed the help of the Soviet Union again.
The communication technology of the modern world was long ago not comparable to that of ancient times, and having made up his mind, Washington immediately contacted Moscow to express the common position of the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
“Send peacekeeping troops into Palestine?” Stalin listened to Molotov’s words and then said, “Wouldn’t that put the Soviet Union on the opposite side of the Arab countries? Diplomatically we can give convenience, but we can’t let the figures of Red Army soldiers stand in front of Arab soldiers.”
“This matter is really very troublesome, although Britain withdrew its military forces under American pressure, but on its way out it deliberately used tactics to make Israel very passive in terms of diplomacy and public opinion.” Molotov mused for a moment and thought of an example, “As in the case of the withdrawal in British India, which has now led to a war between India and Pakistan.”
“This example is quite graphic!” Stalin gave a fatherly smile, “According to some reliable sources, Britain will adopt similar tactics in the future when it lets its colonies become independent, treating the wave of independence with partition.”
Molotov froze and let out a long sigh for a long time before saying, “In that case, the British are too shameless. Is the news reliable, according to our analysis of Britain’s colonial governance policy above, Britain will generally choose to merge colonies to rule, whether it is the white autonomous territories Canada, Australia, or India, Malaya, are many small colonies merged out of the current only British India re-partitioned.”
“Policies can be changed, perhaps the British have discovered the benefits.” Stalin narrowed his eyes and solemnly said, “As for the source of the intelligence, Comrade Molotov only needs to know that it is absolutely reliable.”
Intelligence from the Cambridge Five, Stalin still trusted completely, these idealistic foreign comrades could be more truthful than some moral vacuum.
“Then, since we cannot stand against the Arab states, we will reject the American proposal?” Molotov sought the opinion of the Supreme Leader; after all, the matter involved the general policy of the country, and although it had to do with diplomacy, it was not for him, the Foreign Minister, to say.
“No, we agree, the situation in the Middle East is now dominated by the United States and Britain and France on behalf of the old colonial power, and Israel is an opportunity, which still serves a purpose now. We all understand that in time Israel will inevitably fall to the US and are prepared for that. So be careful in your approach to support.” Stalin sighed, “We support the US peacekeeping force program, support is support, but absolutely no military force should be used, and even if we are willing, the Americans are unwilling, would they want Soviet Red Army soldiers to stand on the soil of the Middle East?”
If the Soviet Union takes control of the Middle East, the oil supply to Europe and the United States will be cut off, Europe will be trapped under siege, and the Soviet Union will have to impose neutrality on Europe without firing a single shot.
This problem Stalin can see, the United States as well as Britain and France can also see, this is the real situation in the Middle East now, who is not all the way with anyone, Britain and France still have to struggle and struggle, the Soviet Union wants to drive in a nail, it is best to tie the United States, Britain, and France together, standing on the opposite side of the Arabs.
But for the moment, the British are not a light, using the power of public opinion that is not damaged, so that the Arab countries, especially the existence of the royal family of the Arab countries, so that they think that the United States and the Soviet Union is the biggest supporter of Israel, and the United Kingdom is completely two-fisted.
The United States in this is by far the strongest among the countries involved, but Britain and France are, after all, old players in the Middle East.
The Soviet Union is close at hand again, and the United States is certainly the strongest, but it also has its own difficulties, the first is the domestic Jewish forces, and the second is that, like the Soviet Union, there is not too good an entry point.
As a new player, the United States because of the domestic Jewish forces, as well as the same as the Soviet Union is the identity of the new player, there is no choice but to support Israel, only through Israel in the Middle East to establish the influence of the success of the foundation in order to think about expanding the power of the beginning of everything is difficult, this is the United States faced with the situation.
As long as you keep Israel, there is always a chance to slowly expand your power in the Middle East in the future.
After the discussion between Stalin and Molotov, Moscow formally gave Washington a response, saying it would support the UN proposal to send peacekeeping troops. The prerequisite was Israel’s acceptance!
There are two main issues for the immediate future of the UN, and like Moscow, New Delhi is meeting to discuss them. But the opinion is strikingly unanimous, and that is the refusal to allow the armies of other countries to intervene in the case of Kashmir.
Both Nehru and Patel believe that this is a preparation for the British to try to make a comeback, knowing that there is a brigade-sized British army that has been stuck in Junagadh Tupang since the outbreak of the war in Kashmir, and that another brigade is in Portuguese Goa, apparently watching the war unfold.
Now the British are still watching from the sidelines, and if India can’t win the Kashmir war pretty well, or at least dominate it, maybe the British will feel they can make a comeback.
Of course more than Patel’s tough refusal, Nehru still spoke to the ministers present, “Of course we have to reject moves by foreign powers to intervene in Kashmir, but diplomacy is not all about showing toughness. We are trying to show, through the British left behind in India, that the special Anglo-Indian relationship still exists and that the relationship between the two countries will not fade because of India’s independence.”
Nehru’s words made many people nod involuntarily, in their eyes, the British Empire is certainly not in a league of its own anymore, but it is still one of the world’s numbered powers, no worse than the United States and the Soviet Union, and a complete lack of face is not an option.
“Have the ambassador in London gain the understanding of the British, but at the UN General Assembly, we maintain our previous attitude of sternly rejecting it.”
The official discussion on the peacekeeping force proposal was preceded by discussions among the various countries involved.
Israel, which is at the very core of the proposal, is of course very much in favor of it, and even took the initiative to approach the United States, saying that if India rejects the UN’s proposal to send a peacekeeping force, it doesn’t matter, Israel is in favor of it.
If this is a few decades later Israel, is absolutely not yet fought on the call for peace, but in 1948 this time, just born Israel is still reasonable, not yet the Middle East war all win accumulated out of the expansion.
As the country that had faced the Arab coalition forces directly, Israel was best able to feel what it was like to have countries increasingly armed and gradually piled on top of each other.
