Chapter 455 – Referendum Date
“I’ll do my best!” Alan Wilson understood this thought, and even repeated his previous words again.
Privately, though still not without a sense of discomfort; he had an instinct which led him to judge of the rights and wrongs of action not from principle but from success or failure; an instinct which was half natural, and half the result of years of dealing with things and observing them, as millions of men of his class had done.
Before he was about to leave, Alan Wilson took the representatives of Newfoundland to London to experience the paperwork of the heart of the Empire, and to celebrate the fact that they had all worked together.
In the streets of London, the street lights on Newpoint grew brighter and brighter, the intense light illuminating the faces of the crowds as gray; high overhead, large white clouds sailed swiftly, lightly, across the dark purple sky.
At the hotel where the Whitehall civil service party was meeting, people in evening dress had opened their coats and picked their way up the steps to the hotel door with brisk steps; men doing their work wandered down the street; women-women who were especially lonely at this time of night-women alone in bunches eastward-walking gently and slowly, with a hopeful demeanor, dreaming of good wine and a good dinner, or, occasionally, for a minute, of a kiss out of love.
Every one, without exception, shook off some of his own class, creed, and fashion, and either wore his hat crookedly, or walked with a brisk step, or laughed, or was silent, and showed by all this that they were all of the same kind in the heat of heaven.
After this night, the next day Alan Wilson, in a trance, had landed at the military base in Newfoundland.
To be honest, he was still part of a hangover, yawning until he was sobered up by the cold wind, “While I understand that Newfoundland isn’t warm because of its location, it’s also too cold up north.”
The south and north of Newfoundland are two worlds altogether, at the same time of year the south is like being in Paris and the north is like being in Siberia, it’s a bit of an exaggeration to say that, but that’s what it means.
The upside is that if we get lucky on the day of the referendum, we might be able to keep a lot of citizens of merged Canada from voting.
But as far as public opinion was concerned, it was likely that such a ploy would not be used, after all, he had been the Chief Executive for most of the year, so at least he had some role to play, and it couldn’t be any worse than it had been historically, and with such a historically bad result as a cushion, he felt that even any change could be chalked up to things moving in the right direction.
In fact, from the colonial empire’s point of view, if this matter came to fruition, it would give the other European colonial powers a great deal of confidence. More flexibility to deal with the windy waves of independence in the colonies.
Other countries Allen Wilson can not guarantee, but France and Portugal will certainly think of ways. Especially Portugal, to tell the truth de Gaulle came to power, received the full support of the French military.
The French military pushed de Gaulle to power for an important reason, is already tired of the political chaos in France, support de Gaulle in power, in fact, want to turn France into a state similar to the military government, many military generals hope that de Gaulle, play the role of Napoleon, continue to support the army’s Algerian War.
In the end, of course, de Gaulle did not continue to entangle himself in Algeria. Alan Wilson thought that if Portugal had the power of France, or vice versa, and France had a ruler like Salazar, it would almost have gathered the conditions for continued repression.
De Gaulle, while not ultimately the Napoleon of this era, would have been a luxury to expect Napoleon to re-emerge in the modern era, and while British, Allen Wilson similarly believed that De Gaulle had been considered the most capable politician Europe had seen in this era.
The citizens of Newfoundland would not have known how far-reaching the outcome of the Newfoundland referendum would be for the future.
Alan Wilson also paid too much, in order to save time, he is because of the Newfoundland thing to do a few times on the plane, so a love of the feet on the ground chief executive by plane? Is there any law of the land?
The next day, Allen Wilson and the Newfoundland representatives who accompanied him to London had returned to St. John’s.
After returning to the Governor’s mansion, Allen Wilson directly brought Savievich and Boris over to ask whether the situation in Newfoundland was stable during the time he was away.
“Governor, Mr. Smallwood has, of late, suffered many vicious attacks.” Although Boris was happy in his heart, he did not show it on his face.
“Wow!” Alan Wilson sighed meaningfully and inexplicably, and said in an unsavory manner, “Mr. Smallwood, shouldn’t have been treated like this, although this is all a spontaneous move by the citizens, but for an old man who is no longer magnificent, isn’t it a bit too much.”
In fact, it could be even more excessive, Allen Wilson was going to focus on not blaming Joseph Roberts Smallwood for his personal behavior in the next broadcast, although for Smallwood, letting this matter pass would be the greatest good, but Allen Wilson surely couldn’t let it pass, he believed that the more the truth was debated, the more it would be clear.
As for Savijevic, he says it’s business as usual in the logging area, “It’s actually quite surprising to me that tens of thousands of people are so obedient.”
“I’ll say this neutrally, without going overboard with the chasing, the Chinese are second to none in the world when it comes to respect for authority and discipline. What’s more, many of the Chinese workers, who were originally soldiers like you, are still able to do what they are told.” Alan Wilson breathed a sigh of relief, for any society that had taken shape, foreigners were a very sensitive place.
Always mentioning it as if it was a minor issue seemed insufficiently tolerant, but if it was tacitly acknowledged, it usually wasn’t a minor issue when the day came for it to be a real problem.
For Alan Wilson now, he hopes that everything will be smooth in Newfoundland, first get the results out, and when the dust settles, he can handle any further incidents with ease.
India and Pakistan are still fighting, each claiming to be okay, but in reality they are exhausted. And the ceasefire between Israel and the Arabs is almost over.
Although these two things are also considered a major event in the world, but and Alan Wilson has nothing to do with, he is now the eyes of the biggest thing is the Newfoundland referendum, all other things are trivial.
It’s not that he himself thinks so, the three wars have begun, Truman and Dewey have time to care?
He, a chief executive, was certainly not comparable to a candidate for the presidency of the United States, but the reasoning was the same.
In the evening, just returned to St. Johns Alan Wilson, voice once again appeared in the radio, expounded his this time to London’s gains, as well as the Prime Minister Aidley endorsed the three programs.
The three options do not have the option of self-governing territories, for which Allen Wilson had a long explanation, mainly explaining that there is no essential difference between the royal territory option and the self-governing territories option, still recognizing the self-governance of Newfoundland, but the consideration of Newfoundland’s problems is more comprehensive.
“In fact, with Newfoundland’s population, it was like sitting on a golden mountain, but without the ability to protect this mountain, London took into account Newfoundland’s demographic disadvantage and inability to protect its own fishing grounds. That’s why the Crown Dependency Program was proposed, so that the power of the Royal Navy could be borrowed to protect Newfoundland’s fishing grounds.”
While this is a complete lie, the majority of a society simply can’t comprehend anything too esoteric either. By taking the tactic of blurring the facts and saying this, Alan Wilson was actually looking out for the interests of the citizens of Newfoundland.
Simply put, self-government is the Crown Dependency, the Crown Dependency is self-government, and it is enough for the citizens of Newfoundland to realize that this is the optimal choice for Newfoundland.
Then lending to the option of merging Canada, Alan Wilson mentioned the recent flak that Smallwood had received. The sell-out rhetoric, which had gradually begun to die down, was once again made widely known over the airwaves.
Although in the middle of the broadcast, Allen Wilson repeatedly emphasized that Smallwood’s proposal should not be the reason for the flak he was receiving, the underlying purpose was actually to make sure that the citizens of Newfoundland didn’t forget the man.
“As for the final colonial proposal, I honestly can’t even fathom why this proposal was retained. It seems to me that the biggest thing that keeping the colonial option does is make the option that stays seem more democratic. To dilute some of the animosity and antagonism that the two referendum options might have created, there is no other explanation than that.” Allen Wilson’s voice, through this broadcast, reached thousands of homes, while he finally set the date for the referendum, “It is not advisable to delay too long, after all, the World War has been over for three years now, so let us set the first of next month for the holding of the referendum that will decide the future fate of Newfoundland.”
“Honorable citizens of Newfoundland, the future is in your own hands, be sure to seriously consider the precious power in your hands.”
The broadcast terminated, Alan Wilson turned off the radio, stood up and stretched, and made a decision in his mind to make a trip to the Anglican church tomorrow.
It was now half a month before the time of the referendum, and if God, his old man, was kind, Allen Wilson, as the administrator of Newfoundland, had a small request; he hoped that within half a month there would be a sufficiently plentiful snowfall.
This was in no way selfish, he was merely remembering the saying that snow is a good sign of prosperity and hoping for a better future for Newfoundland, although the more snow that fell was a relative disadvantage to the settlements outside of St. John’s.
The date of the referendum had been officially released, and supporters of independence and supporters of an amalgamated Canada were able to set up a ring for debate, something that simply couldn’t be stopped, and Alan Wilson simply ceded the airwaves to supporters of both factions to come on the air and make their case.
Of course, some of the supporters of the merger of Canada, eloquence has such a little problem, clumsy, and Allen Wilson has nothing to do with, may be the first time some nervous it.
People are just not the same, and how is it that supporters of becoming a Crown Dependency are articulate?
