Chapter 47 Southward to Vienna
This report, Alan Wilson, because he knew of the existence of the Cambridge Five, had long been prepared in his mind that it would leak out.
For the time being, he felt, on repeated reflection, that whatever the outcome, it had nothing to do with the British Empire. To the United States, Britain in 1945 was still qualified to say no.
In fact, from the division of the Yalta Conference’s zonal occupation of Germany can be seen, the Soviet Union occupies more than forty percent of the German land, the Soviet-occupied zone is the largest area. Whereas the British-occupied zone occupied the Ruhr, the most industrially powerful part of Germany, as well as the excellent coastline and ports in the northwest, the U.S.-occupied zone was the state of Bavaria in the south of Germany.
The U.S.-occupied zone was no larger than the Soviet Union, and was not an industrial zone, and was not as densely populated and industrially developed as the British-occupied zone. The USSR occupied the largest land, the UK occupied the best resources and population, and in contrast the US was an embarrassment. Now it also had to join Britain in dividing up some of the land to France.
The United States, of course, was at a disadvantage as a result of this partition, and it had a strong opinion of the program. On the one hand, it thought that the Soviet-occupied zone was too large; on the other hand, the Ruhr zone, in which it was interested, fell into the hands of Britain. So the United States worked out a new program of occupation.
The new program proposed by the Americans simply meant that the American-occupied zone and the British-occupied zone would be swapped, with the British occupying the southern part of Germany and the American-occupied zone becoming the present British-occupied zone, which, of course, included the Ruhr.
Diplomatic exchanges between Britain and the United States to exchange occupation areas, from the Cairo Conference has been noisy to the Yalta Conference, the United Kingdom has not conceded, with the momentum of the Soviet Union’s Red Army more and more fierce, the United States had to accept the reality of the honest acceptance of the division of the present.
As for the origin of the French-occupied zone, the United Kingdom put the United States on the front line of the confrontation with the Soviet Union, for the purpose of pulling France together, in the post-war Britain and France to the United States of America to hold back the initial intention of France to take the strategy of pulling France together.
Which the British Foreign Office and the Americans after how many times the war of words, but also in the Soviet Union Red Army assisted the United States ate a boring loss, not Alan Wilson can speculate, he is still in British India bathed in the light of the sacred cow.
But with this division of the occupation zone came the problem that the British-occupied zone had in fact become irrelevant to the Balkans. Tito’s opponents within Yugoslavia were actually out of reach of the British.
This is actually an illusion, because Austria was also zoned, and Austria’s zoning was similar to Germany’s, with the Soviet Union occupying the largest area and Britain occupying the best lots and population. British occupation is just right, in the face of these Tito opponents.
But at present nominally Austria is partitioned occupation, but in fact, the United States, Britain and France occupy the area of the army is less pathetic, and undefended area is almost the same, the nominal occupation area, is completely the Soviet Red Army’s restraint.
Because the death of the tiger does not fall Wei, these pre-war British for reasons of fighting Germany to support the anti-German faction of the countries in the eyes of the United Kingdom is still the world’s first colonial empire, and do not know that the United Kingdom has been exhausted internally, can no longer suppress the United States and the Soviet Union two countries, have to consider and France to unite together to self-preservation.
So the Yugoslav Fatherland Army, as well as other organizations opposed to Tito, still sought to surrender to Britain.
Two days after the German surrender ceremony, Allen Wilson was considering whether to find a German dragoon with a pack of cigarettes to clean his sponsored apartment, and in the meantime save the German lost women and help the other side with their immediate needs.
Telegrams came from the British representation in Vienna, or the border was clouded with Tito opponents, including the Yugoslav Fatherland Army, the Croatian Ustasha, the Slovenian Home Defense Army, a forest of people some of whom couldn’t even be named, and among whom were perhaps genuine refugees, fearful of being liquidated by Tito.
These organizations were very complex, and the Chetniks, made up of mainly Serbs who supported the government of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, were the anti-German forces active in Yugoslavia during World War II, officially known as the Yugoslav Fatherland Army. The name “Chetnik” is derived from a Serbian word, and like the King of Yugoslavia, it received early British support.
The Croatian Ustasha was formed in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia with the goal of giving Croatia independence from Yugoslavia, and was supported by Germany and Italy. As for the Slovenian Home Defense Army, it was another German-backed organization.
Now these anti-Tito forces, which belonged to different organizations, began to flee Yugoslavia, driven by survival instincts, to the borders of Austria and Germany, praying for asylum, because the Southern Communist Party, led by Tito, had taken control of Yugoslavia.
Smoking a cigarette to rest and relax in his room, Allen Wilson heard footsteps outside the door, and immediately picked up the telegram from Vienna again, making a sad face, looking very difficult.
“Allen, what’s the matter?” Ivor just entered the door to see Allen Wilson a constipated expression, simply himself to follow the difficult, can not help but open the mouth to ask.
“It’s something in the direction of the Balkans, the Yugoslavian Fatherland Army is clustered at the Austrian border. The number of people has already exceeded one hundred thousand, if it is not dealt with, something might happen.” Alan Wilson said worriedly, “Something might happen. Immediate persuasion should be considered to get these people back to Yugoslavia.”
“A hundred thousand people?” Aifor frowned, “That’s a lot of people, we have almost no troops in Austria, the nominal zonal occupation, in reality it’s only the Soviet Red Army occupying the eastern part of Austria, staying in the other three occupied parts of Austria besides the Soviet-occupied zone, there aren’t many troops, there’s no way to defend against it.”
“Yes, if these Yugoslavs break through the border, do we let the Austrian army intercept them?” Alan Wilson, movie star extraordinaire, also looked worried. A small oversight just after World War II could be a big problem.
Unlike Germany’s partitioned occupation, Austria’s only exists in name, and if these Yugoslav opponents, determined to cross the border at all costs, Britain, France and the U.S. don’t really have much in the way of troops to intercept them, which would be quite embarrassing.
All that’s needed now is someone to help these people make up their minds to cross the border in an organized, planned and premeditated way, rather than as a scattered group.
“The Austrian representative office, with the aim of avoiding Soviet hostility, has been persuading these people in good faith. But the numbers are growing, and we still need to raise our attention to the situation.” Alan Wilson spoke up, “Why don’t I make a trip to Vienna and observe it up close, it would be best if the Vienna side could persuade these people to return to Yugoslavia.”
“I hope so, even if it means cajoling them.” Avril nodded solemnly, very much recognizing Alan Wilson’s idea, as long as these Yugoslavs go back, it’s Tito’s business, and it has nothing to do with Britain.
“Good! I hope everything goes well.” Alan Wilson agreed, cajoling? How could a man as honest as him do something like that?
