Chapter 505: Breaking the Nuclear Monopoly
The most hotly debated matter among the citizens of Paris throughout August was the Cannes International Film Festival, which had already begun, and came to Paris with many Parisian Hollywood stars, whose arrival made the passionate and romantic French extremely excited, and the many glittering stars became the center of the newspapers.
On August 29, 1949, a loud jolt from within the Soviet Union was monitored by Britain and the United States. The nuclear monopoly that the United States had maintained for four years was broken.
As the Cannes International Film Festival came to a close, reconnaissance planes sent by the U.S. penetrated deep into the Soviet Union’s territory and monitored radioactive elements spreading in the air, thus proving the fact that the Soviet Union had successfully tested a nuclear bomb.
Citizens of all countries cared about the movie fest and talked about the flings of handsome men and women, while the British and American executives were silent.
“The Soviets are ahead of us, will the finished product of the alloy tube program be available or not?” At the cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Adderley snapped with a grave look on his face, “What now? The United States and the Soviet Union both have nuclear bombs, only we don’t have them in our hands! With what to maintain the position of the British Empire.”
“According to the report from the project leader, at the most we will be able to come up with a finished product by the end of the year, out of the blue is the Soviet Union, it’s hard to imagine that they have jumped ahead of us.” Defense Secretary Albert, Alexander was also shocked by the news of the successful test explosion of the Soviet nuclear explosion.
“We have to come up with something that is sufficient to defend the interests of the British Empire, that’s what we have to do.” Adderley said in a heavy tone, “Time is precious, I hope you gentlemen understand this.”
There were many things that put Prime Minister Aidley under pressure, the situation in the Far East was already worrying, and now there was such bad news.
After the meeting was adjourned, Cabinet Secretary Norman Brooke entered the Prime Minister’s office and took out a stack of information and said, “Prime Minister, this is the news that the American side has inquired about, how to reply?”
“Norman, you know it too.” Ignoring the documents laid out in front of him, Adderley sighed and said, “This is unfortunate news for the British Empire, the Soviets were already impregnable on land. Now it’s even more difficult to deal with, and we must say that Europe is becoming even more dangerous.”
“It may be!” Norman Brooke mused, “I’m sure Washington is in shock right now.”
“That’s for sure, Truman must be anxious now, and why shouldn’t I be.” Prime Minister Adderley smiled bitterly.
After half a day’s thought, Prime Minister Aidley began to flip through the documents sent by the United States about the significance of establishing an output control coordinating committee.
The U.S. proposal could be more than that, there was also a proposal about the merger of the three zones, and it stated that if London could fast track the merger of the three occupation zones, it could receive an exchange of benefits, and it also pointed out that Germany after the merger of the three zones to establish a centralized government could be used as a natural defense to block the Soviet Union’s attack on Western Europe.
“It seems we’ll have to agree!” Adderley looked at it for a few moments and thought for a moment, “I now feel that the entire British Empire is in crisis everywhere, there is a crisis overseas, there is a crisis in Europe, and even if we maintain a force of 800,000 now, it still feels a little inadequate.”
“Yes, Prime Minister, the Far East, the Middle East, Europe, everywhere needs army reinforcement. Currently the situation in the Far East is the most precarious, but if a crisis breaks out, it’s still the European side that’s the most deadly.” Norman Brooke laughed bitterly.
“Don’t we have a suitable talent in the Far East?” Prime Minister Adderley said this and suddenly said, “I remember that Allen is a talent in this area, right, can he stabilize the situation in Asia?”
“In fact, recently I have been thinking about where he would be more suitable. But lately he’s making friends with McCarthy!” Norman Brooke introduced up Alan Wilson’s work in the United States, and didn’t hide the fact that Alan Wilson didn’t even go back to the Boston consulate very much, and the only thing he paid attention to was to build a deep friendship with McCarthy.
“Let him go to Malaya to stabilize the situation there, if he really has that desire. Wait and move him back first.” Adderley didn’t dwell on it for too long, it was settled straight away.
On September 3, Allen Wilson also learned about the successful explosion of the Soviet nuclear bomb, not that the individual had any remarkable intelligence channels, McCarthy was on television to slam the Truman administration and testify to his own words with the fact that the successful explosion of the Soviet nuclear bomb, both the federal government is full of Soviet spies within the federal government, has been infiltrated by the Soviets a thousand holes.
“I remember countless statements that proved that the Soviets wouldn’t be in control of a nuclear bomb for ten years, that they were backward, that they were poor. Now I would like the gentlemen who were so optimistic about this before to come out and explain where the Soviet Union got its nuclear bomb technology.” McCarthy’s spittle seemed to be able to fly through the screen, and the whole thing was very impassioned.
Of course in the eyes of McCarthy’s supporters, this no one loves America more than me sentiment is the real America. The so-called well-dressed government officials, that’s not America at all.
“Your friend made a big splash!” Vivienne snuggled into the man’s shoulder, pretending to be interested in politics.
“Needless to say, the news of the successful explosion of the Soviet Union’s nuclear bomb is sure to keep the FBI busy.” Alan Wilson chuckled, “Hey, London has summoned me back.”
“Then go back!” Vivien Leigh looked at Alan Wilson understandingly, “I’ll come back to you when I give birth to the baby.”
“I’ll turn in my work, not for a few days.” Alan Wilson rubbed the belly of the Great British Treasure, “There’s always a handover, and it’s not too late to wait until the new Boston consul arrives in the United States.”
He wanted to delay going back until Vivienne was comfortable with the birth, reasoning that he wanted to have a farewell ceremony with his American friends, and McCarthy was specifically mentioned in the telegram.
“Actually, what’s the panic about Americans? Can’t people do their own research!” Allen Wilson listened to McCarthy’s loud shouts inside the TV and spoke in a nonchalant manner.
“What a terrible weapon a nuclear bomb is, people say it’s capable of destroying the earth.” Vivienne disagreed a little, she watched the rhetoric on the television and it wasn’t at all what this man was talking about.
“Gryphons always think highly of themselves, exterminating the human race doesn’t always do it, and they still want to destroy the Earth. Too funny.” Alan Wilson laughed out loud, “This kind of obsessive confidence and obsessive inferiority complex of the Americans is really interesting, one moment saying that it is impossible for the Soviets to make nuclear weapons, and the next moment saying that the earth is destroyed, can you harmonize your opinions before speaking?”
About the Soviet Union’s nuclear weapon explosion, it seems to have irritated the Americans a lot. But as far as Alan Wilson see, how simple this matter, the Soviet spies so-called got the United States information, even if all is true is only a small part of the do.
Similar to this kind of engineering appeared, it is impossible to be through the theft can be solved, itself or the Soviet Union has this strength.
Just as the USSR also helped a major country with its nuclear program, who can say that a major country’s nuclear weapons are all the credit of the USSR and that it did nothing? Anyone who dares to say that will be sprayed to death!
But that’s how most people are, theirs must have been meticulously researched, painstakingly started from scratch, and even if they got outside help, it must have been the result of their own efforts. But when the same thing happens to another country, it’s stealing.
Why don’t the Americans calculate how much help they got from Britain’s much earlier alloy tube program? And then backtracked after the fact?
In the name of handover Alan Wilson, and McCarthy opened up, “Joseph my friend, I may have to return to the mainland, the experience of working over here has been a time to remember, and the greatest reward has been getting to know you.”
“Oh Alan, you’re going back?” McCarthy spoke with some surprise, “This time it’s to say goodbye to me.”
“If there’s a chance for you to go to London, or take a vacation somewhere else, if it’s a British Overseas Territory, I can arrange it for you.” Allen Wilson made a sort of sideways admission that his Boston consulship was over, “Not much has been determined about where to go next. But wherever I am, your friendship with me won’t change, it won’t be alienated by age.”
Alan Wilson was all sincerity, he had even decided to help the other side to kill Chaplin off, though odds are there might be some conspiracy theories that Chaplin’s death might have something to do with the United States.
It just so happened that Chaplin had just been deported from the United States, wouldn’t that be very appropriate?
Although it’s a little hard to justify on a moral level to lay a hand on a world-renowned comedian. But in order to add a fire to the American movie industry and even the entire domestic environment, he believed that paying a small price was worth it.
Besides, he was no longer ready to do it right away, Allen Wilson happened to remember that after Chaplin was deported he would make a movie bashing the United States, which seemed to be called King of New York, connoting a handful of his own deportation from the United States. It would be more appropriate to wait until after this movie came out.
McCarthy doesn’t realize that his oblivious friend is having a bad day and is ready to make the death of a master comedian attributable to the American factor.
But Alan Wilson also showed a sincere side, sort of advice to McCarthy before leaving, “My friend Joseph, I’ve met a lot of members of Congress, it may be different from the United States, but I believe that in the same perspective to do things are also similar, like you, a member of Congress, very real, although the embodiment of the support of the American citizenry, but may also be used by the bad guys on, and I’m very concerned about that.”
McCarthy was also surprised by Alan Wilson so sincere performance, understand this young foreign friend, is the true feelings to make reminders, quite touched, “Alan, don’t be so sad, after returning to the country you may be more valued by London.”
“I hope so, but now talking about you, Joseph.” Alan Wilson wasn’t diverted, “Those of us who are civil servants in Whitehall spend most of our time studying elected members of parliament and know how to deal with them, if I was an American I’d probably be trying to find a way to deal with you every day for the members of parliament I serve.”
“Don’t bash overly powerful forces, like the arts and culture sector is a good target to start with as they have little energy and do a lot of harm. But a lot of sectors can’t be touched, these sectors have a lot of real power once they unite against you, the consequences are unimaginable, the most powerful sector is undoubtedly the military, don’t offend the military at any time.”
McCarthy listened to the heartfelt words of his forgotten friend, from which he heard an unheard of sincerity, and finally agreed, “My friend, I’ve taken note of your advice, and when the day comes for you to return to the country, I’ll definitely come over to say goodbye.”
