Chapter 52: A Secret Meeting
“On the surface, it’s fairly contained. We’ve mobilized all the staff here, persuaded the Yugoslavs, and concentrated all the armed men defending the border.” George, the diplomat from the state of Carinthia, replied busily, following in the footsteps of Alan Wilson, who had just gotten out of his car.
“Ostensibly? Concentrated all armed personnel? Ah!” Allen Wilson’s body paused slightly, his mouth open to the northwest, as if trying to let the northwest calm the brain that was making him a bit disorganized, before saying after a while, “Just state the actual situation directly.”
The use of such qualifying wording basically concluded that the situation was more serious than it appeared. As for concentrating all armed personnel to defend the border? That would depend on how many British troops were in the British-occupied areas. According to what Alan Wilson knew, and the actual situation in Austria, there were currently only two battalions of British troops in the Austrian British-occupied zone.
Otherwise, how could he say that the three occupation armies together are as good as nothing in front of the Soviet occupation forces in Austria.
“Because the southern part of Carinthia itself is inhabited by a number of Slovenes, the Austrian government has been paralyzed, we simply do not know how many of these Slovenes, probably quite a number of Yugoslavia over the refugees, lurking in the local area we do not know, and now that Austria is in a state of occupation, we can not organize the army of the former Austrian government to do things, the good thing is that there has not yet been a signs of large numbers of refugees crossing the border.” George explained the actual situation, carefully looking at Alan Wilson.
Hearing has the order of the arts, don’t look at Alan Wilson’s unexpected age, but he is the current British liaison officer in Europe, if he wants to, he can completely put George’s work in dealing with the refugee problem in the middle of the report, said a mess.
But apparently Alan Wilson is in a good mood, now there is no large number of refugees crossing the border, does not mean that it will not be in the future, do not mince words of praise, “in the face of such a large number of refugees, the work of the Carinthia Special Operations Division is satisfactory, it seems to have stabilized the situation, we work together to see how to solve the problem, by the way, prepare a map for me. ”
With that said he entered the British quarters of Klagenfurt Prime, Klagenfurt was a large city in the south of Austria, but a large city by European standards was not the same concept as a large city in the east, this place actually only had a few tens of thousands of inhabitants.
This place is thirty kilometers away from the Yugoslavian border and sixty kilometers away from Italy, a standard border town.
Taking the map of Carinthia was not so much a matter of preparing what to do about Yugoslavia or Italy as it was a matter of planning whether or not these refugees could avoid the attention of the Soviet Red Army and get to the south of Germany, where General Patton was the administrator.
Ostensibly it could be done; north of the British-occupied zone in Austria was the American-occupied zone, and the Austrian American-occupied zone was connected to the German American-occupied zone. For reasons of success, however, it was best to stay off that route; to the west of Austria was French-occupied Austria, and success would be greatest from there, except that it might be a bit farther on the road.
After a bit of catching up on geography, Alan Wilson reappeared at dinner time and spoke to the local British diplomats, “We must talk to the leaders of these Yugoslavs, not just to these Fatherland Army people but to Tito’s people as well, and ideally we should be able to remove the hostility between all of us, which I don’t think will be a problem, after all, we’ve had contact before. ”
The relationship between Britain and Tito was not bad, Britain had previously supported Tito in place of the Yugoslav Fatherland Army as the force representing Yugoslavia, and few people knew that the liaison officer who had previously been at Tito’s side was called Randolph Churchill, the son of Churchill, the Prime Minister of the British Empire.
Alan Wilson, who inherited the British Empire’s tradition of stepping on two boats, could not be prepared to talk only to these opponents of Tito, and if these opponents of Tito, could not cooperate according to the future he had planned. He could not rule out the possibility of selling the Yugoslav Fatherland Army once more.
After discussing with George, Alan Wilson asked George to liaise with the Tito side, while he himself prepared to meet with the leaders of the Yugoslav Fatherland Army and the various organizations mixed up in it.
The leader of the Yugoslav Fatherland Army, Draca Mihajlovic, was the deputy chief of staff of the Second Army Group at the time of the German invasion, and formed the Yugoslav Fatherland Army in the Lavnagora Mountains after his troops were routed, and Mihajlovic carried out the struggle against the Germans. Mihailović’s struggle against the Germans was supported by Britain and King Peter II in London.
Of course, Britain later turned to support Tito, the evolution of which is more complex, and now Germany has been defeated, forced by Tito has been desperate Mihailovic, and thought of the British Empire, led the remnants of the Yugoslav Fatherland Army, as well as other Tito’s opponents to the Austrian border, in the hope that a certain way out.
A glimmer of hope rose in Mihailovic’s heart when he learned that the newly arrived liaison officer was to meet with him under secret conditions. In his current situation, even the outbreak of World War III would be a good thing.
Mikhailovich came and crossed the border to the meeting place prepared by Alan Wilson, which was an ordinary hut, not only did it not have a bit of grandiose scenery, it could even be said that it was a bit simple.
Allen Wilson did not even prepare an interpreter, he heard that Mihailovich knows some English. The door was pushed open, the same lone as far as Mikhailovich came in, four eyes relative, both are surprised color.
Mihailovich was shocked at Alan Wilson’s age, but immediately relieved, when he was at his side of the liaison officer Randolph Churchill is actually less than thirty years old.
Allen Wilson, on the other hand, was surprised by Mikhailovich’s costume, the other party’s costume was exactly like an Imperial Russian Cossack veteran well, a face of beard, even more so.
“Mr. Mikhailovich, please sit down.” Alan Wilson stood up and gestured, “Today, I’m looking for you, it’s about the future of the more than 100,000 people in the current border area, please forgive the humble conditions here. For a number of reasons we can only meet under these conditions.”
Mikhailovich pulled out a chair, sat down and said in half-baked English, “Since when does a liaison officer of the British Empire, already have to talk to being in such a setting, but there is one thing I agree with, it involves the lives of over a hundred thousand people. In fact, it was my intention to save the lives of these men that I came here to surrender to the British Empire, those of us who were left behind just wanted to live.”
“Yes, that is our common purpose.” Alan Wilson lowered his voice, “But the difficulty of this matter is still there, it needs our joint efforts, Mr. Mihajlovic, I believe that you are also aware of the current situation, the entire territory of Yugoslavia is almost under the control of Tito, and this situation makes it very difficult for London.”
