Chapter 531 Traveling with Hepburn
After sending telegrams to Bonn, Paris and Los Angeles respectively, Alan Wilson, taking into account the fact that the year was 1950, composed a report on the situation in the Far East as the last written report before going to his post that did not concern Malaya.
In fact, it is not entirely correct to say so, there are still some contents related to Malaya.
If the Korean War broke out, Britain would certainly side with the United States, and there was nothing anyone could do to stop it.
At most, it will be like in history, send a million people to perfunctory, completely shrug off the United States does not cooperate is unrealistic.
In the report on the situation in the Far East, Allen Wilson analyzed the possibility of the outbreak of war in the Far East from the current Chinese national strength and historical habits. As well as the possible emergence of various situations of countermeasures.
In the opening content, Allen Wilson showed that “Vietnam and Korea, is the history of the Chinese dynasty interference in the important areas, involving these two places, whether a thousand years ago or now, China is bound to interfere, even if the Manchurian royal family has been the end of the road in the late stage, they are ultimately at great risk of turmoil out. ”
“So once something happens in those two places, don’t expect no and China won’t react, fortunately, the current headaches over this are the French and Americans.”
“As for the Far East, which is currently transforming into a Soviet regime, one can extrapolate on the Soviet Union’s performance during the early stages of the Russian Civil War. What is certain is that the military power far exceeds that of the remnants of the artillery party trapped on an isolated island. British and American interests differed when it came to Far Eastern interests. The United States was likely to react with stress in the event of a change of heart. Because the U.S. desperately needs to show leadership after having just moved to the center of the world stage.”
“In the event of a great power confrontation, I can conclude that the U.S. will win extremely hard, if not at all. Being in Britain’s point of view, it is of course important to avoid getting involved, and if it is really unavoidable, one must take into account whether the scale of the war will radicalize the situation in Europe.”
“The reason why the British Empire, which ran the world, made little progress in the Far East lies in the fact that the Qing dynasty was a very powerful dynasty. With a strong grip, even far more difficult to deal with than the equally centralized France in Europe, we waited for decades and never found the opportunity to strike. And when the opportunity finally came, a world war broke out.”
“Europe’s longstanding fear that the East, with its huge population, would be an unimaginably difficult adversary once it was fully armed has been partially realized, and now, once North Korea or Vietnam draws the two countries into confrontation, an enemy with virtually unlimited manpower, backed by the Soviet Union, is something the United States can’t handle, either. ”
The analysis on the outbreak of war in Korea or Vietnam, as well as the prediction of the possible response of the opponent, is the last report Allen Wilson gave to Norman Brooke, because this report is very important, he is directly handed over to Norman Brooke’s hands, and to take just arrived at the post of High Commissioner of Malaya to guarantee that, as long as the war in the two places breaks out, his own prediction is absolutely with a huge possibility.
“Allen, you are still so cautious, if you think the situation in the Far East is dangerous, why in the first place has been the director of the introduction of Chinese, that is not to put the threat into the middle of the territory of the British Empire?”
Norman Brooke looked at the report submitted by Alan Wilson, which could be described as very alarmist, and asked directly in return.
“Honorable Sir, can we look for the answer among the history of the founding of the Soviet Union.” Alan Wilson said without panic, “It is a known fact that Imperial Russia was larger than the Soviet Union. The country founded by revolutionaries wasn’t just a bunch of hotheads who didn’t care about anything, or else the Soviet Union shouldn’t have been led by Stalin, but by Trotsky, who was going to push for a world revolution. Malaya is still far away from the continent, outside its radiation.”
“So what are the chances of this report of yours becoming a reality?” Norman Brooke frowned.
“Fifty percent, any question has both right and wrong answers.” Alan Wilson said with a twist of words, “But as soon as war breaks out in Korea or Vietnam, you can be sure it’s one hundred percent. I presume that the United States will not take kindly to that, and of course the same goes for America’s opponents. What happens to them I don’t care, but I hope Britain doesn’t get caught in the crossfire. And once war breaks out, I’m going to do my best to prove to the people of Malaya that Britain is not the United States, and that the two countries are ultimately different.”
“Well, this one report will stay with me for now.” Norman Brooke nodded his head, he actually didn’t quite believe in the authenticity of this report, but sitting in front of him was another expert on the Orient, so he decided to put the report away for now, he might be able to use it later.
“If the Korean War breaks out, I guess the entire Whitehall will think by then that no one knows more about the Orient than me.” Alan Wilson walked out of the Cabinet Office muttering to himself, for a certain country this is the battle to establish a country, for him it is the battle to establish a persona.
About to go to Malaya, the current two major ethnic groups, one of the pacifist community, Allen Wilson is not considered to understand, but this is not a big problem, do not understand can slowly understand, pacifists and Chinese in his eyes there is no essential difference, to really have a difference, if the pacifists were hammered by the European hammer some more miserable.
The move to bring in the Chinese in recent years was just as much at the expense of the Pacifists, so what? Just do it!
After setting a time for his appointment, Allen Wilson notified a number of his colleagues who had been in British India, and began to prepare for the completion of his next job, to try and make a breakthrough with Hepburn.
Needless to say, he wanted to get this East and West countless men in the eyes of the dream girl, now Audrey Hepburn has not been famous, he has this possibility as a purpose.
Ready to borrow the last bit of his time in London to plot what to do, Alan Wilson then returned home, Pamela Mountbatten of course, and a problem child of the British Empire royal family, Princess Margaret.
“You’re back!” Princess Margaret was sitting in the living room and instead greeted the owner of this residence first.
“Oh, honorable princess, very surprising.” Alan Wilson’s face slightly changed color, then looked around and shouted, and got a response from Pamela Mountbatten, who was upstairs, before relaxing a lot, and said in a friendly manner, “Since you’re here, don’t be courteous, please have a seat.”
“I heard Pamela say that you were going to Malaya to take up an appointment as commissioner; conditions must be very bad so far away.” Princess Margaret sat down very nicely and asked, “Actually what’s wrong with staying in London.”
“There is certainly nothing wrong with London if you just consider the ease of living.” Alan Wilson snorted and said, “Honorable Princess, do you want to be a respected princess of a powerful country? Or do you want to be a member of the royal family like Prince Philip? In fact, with the power of Britain’s mainland, it is not much stronger than Greece, even from the historical and cultural point of view, Britain is not as good as Greece, can you imagine the consequences of Britain losing all its overseas territories?”
“You can’t, and likewise I don’t want to, and it doesn’t fit in with Whitehall’s ideas. And presumably not what Pamela and the noblemen had in mind.” Alan Wilson asked himself, “That’s why we have to create a system that is self-running enough to keep it free from interference, and to that end Whitehall colleagues have made a huge effort and have the support of the Prime Minister.”
“Are you doing this for the Crown?” Princess Margaret muttered in a small voice, “No wonder Pamela is so defensive of you.”
“It’s just that the general direction is aligned with the interests of the royal family, so I can’t talk about doing it for the sake of the royal family, but I will always embrace this kingdom because I understand that without this royal family, the development of the UK is far from being even a match for Canada or Australia.”
“Honey’s back?” Pamela Mountbatten came down the stairs with a smile on her face, saying as she walked, “The Princess is here as a guest today, and I hope I don’t make you angry because of it; I know you like quiet.”
“I dare not!” Ellen Wilson said with her head held high, “If you wear a skirt you’ll be naked, come down.”
It was about to rain. The sky was black with grayish-purple clouds covering the sky, making it almost impossible to tell the sky or the ground apart. There was a pungent odor in the air and the chilly wind seemed to seep into Audrey Hepburn’s marrow. The branches of the trees rustled in the wind, a sad sound that struck at her heart.
Too busy to stare at the clouds, she kept sensing them approaching. Driven by some sense of urgency, she checked the engine, made sure there was enough fuel, and carried firewood to the house and the back porch of the kitchen.
Maybe her instincts were wrong. Maybe, as the weather forecast said, it would rain heavily all day.
But she trusted her instincts. This was the third year she’d spent in England, and before each downpour, she always felt the same sweat stand up, as if the air was full of energy and nature was poised to strike. Whether that was caused by static electricity in the air or some old magical sixth sense, there was always some sort of uneasiness running up her spine.
She didn’t mind being alone. But closing all the vacation cabins by herself wasn’t easy. Eight vacation cabins were scattered along the shores of the scenic, fish-rich lake, some of which had more than one bedroom.
She had to make sure the doors and windows were all closed tightly against the cold winds; the water valves had to be turned off and the pipes emptied to avoid freezing and bursting when the power went out. She could be sure the power was bound to go out; it was just a matter of time.
