Chapter 954 – The Last Man in France
“The way things are going, this is a military coup.” Alan Wilson, who had returned to the headquarters of the film company again, came to the same conclusion as Sir Ismay, who had in his hands the very same joint open letter from the French generals of Algiers, asking General de Gaulle to form a cabinet.
Seeing Hedy Lamarr and Ingrid Bergman appearing alarmed, he immediately added, “But don’t worry, it’s unlikely that there will be a military government in France.”
A coup d’état by the military, unless there was major fraud in the parliamentary elections, a coup d’état for any reason would be tantamount to betrayal of the country.
“Scares me.” A flash of reproach flashed in Ingrid Bergman’s eyes and she gently pushed the man, “Can’t you England exert some influence? Always claiming to have a leadership responsibility for Europe.”
“Uh, even though we say that, the French never admit it.” Alan Wilson cried, “This is France, the strongest country in Europe for centuries.”
Don’t think that just because France was on its knees in World War II that the country couldn’t do it, given the situation that the French army was facing at the time as well as the depth of France’s territory, after the mobilized armies were wiped out by Manstein’s plan, France’s potential soldiers simply couldn’t sustain frontal combat anymore.
Even so, the mobilized military forces of the French colonies still achieved considerable results under de Gaulle’s command, a question that depends on whether the Italian army counts as a human being or not; by the time Free France killed its way back to its homeland, it already had a million troops, hundreds of thousands of tons of warships, and thousands of combat aircraft.
In terms of the number of enemy troops destroyed, Free France is definitely above the gun party, not comparable to the WWII triumvirate, but a fourth is still no problem.
Unsurprisingly, the French army in Algeria is now going to look for Charles de Gaulle, the hero of WWII who led Free France, immediately after issuing a public statement.
With France’s sky-scraper about to come out and clean up the mess, Allen Wilson has started another round of brainstorming, projecting the possible implications, the most immediate of which is, of course, that NATO’s presence in France is about to have its handful of days.
France, regardless of which party, in fact, the presence of U.S. troops in France are quite critical, but the French government change speed are faster than Allen Wilson buy underwear faster, can always adhere to the Algerian war are considered a miracle, naturally, there is no time to drive the U.S. troops away, but de Gaulle can be different.
The reason for calling the Algerian French army’s stance a coup d’état is, of course, a coup d’état in every sense of the word. De Gaulle’s significance to the late existence of the French Fourth Republic was to overthrow it.
Once de Gaulle had established a stable French political system, it was almost impossible for NATO to continue to exist within France.
Alan Wilson considered whether the US would take the opportunity to get Britain to open up its military bases again. It was no good saving France but taking Britain on, should we give the Foreign Secretary a heads up?
“What are you thinking about? Something for tomorrow.” Hedy Lamarr unbuttoned her blouse and whispered with a teasing hint, “I’ll give you a taste of the movie leading man treatment today.”
“I’m naturally begging for it.” Alan Wilson had a mushy look on his face, like it was a small matter of a threat to the democracy of the free world, and thinking about it a day sooner or later wouldn’t make much of a difference.
If the security of the free world was important, wasn’t manned spaceflight important? It’s high-tech at the cutting edge of humanity.
At this very moment, seven generals, represented by Henri, the commander of the Algerian French army, carrying the collective will of the 800,000 French troops in Algeria, have arrived in Paris, the center of the old revolutionary zone.
From the Bourbon dynasty after the collapse of the old revolutionary region of Paris is keen to the rest of France, practicing a variety of political ideas, dictatorship, democracy, monarch restoration, as long as it can be thought of, the glorious citizens of Paris have to come once again.
During the Third and Fourth Republics, Napoleon was a pejorative term, and after the war many people compared Charles de Gaulle to Napoleon, suggesting that many people were not very embracing of de Gaulle’s political ideas.
But Napoleon, while representing the imperial system, was the peak era of French military power.
Although this peak was compared to the Sun King as the Third Reich was compared to the Second Reich, and militarily it seemed that the Führer had achieved more, in terms of national power, Wilhelm II’s Germany was far stronger than the Germany under the Führer.
After thirteen years and two dozen governments the French, finally picking up the traditional program of the old revolutionary areas, called for the emergence of a strong figure to clean up the mess, and in Algiers the French army announced its support for the formation of a cabinet by Charles de Gaulle, and a large number of people in favor of continuing the war in Algeria embraced the emergence of a political strongman with open hands.
France is an extremely liberal country, which has a lot to do with its heritage, and during the Sun King era France was bled dry by a centralized system.
The French rose up and fought back, and the French Revolution broke out, and since then, the French have been number one in the world in their desire for freedom.
But the French revolution was not necessarily about the pursuit of freedom. The French revolution was essentially a revolution for the sake of revolution, which could embrace the republic with open arms or express its support for the rise to power of Napoleon III. Whether it was ultimately an empire or a republic was actually unimportant, and the outcome after the revolution was actually unimportant, the process of the revolution was important.
“Those so-called parliamentarians in the National Assembly are not only incompetent but shameless.” One of the generals following General Henry around, who had seen firsthand the Cabinet’s inability to do anything about this rise of the Phi Beta Kappa protests, commented disdainfully.
“All right, Jones.” General Henry spoke, “The purpose of our visit is not well these protesting people a purpose, go directly to the office on the Rue Solferino, we want to meet General de Gaulle.”
There is no doubt that General Henri, in his capacity as Commander of the French Army in Algeria, has come back this time, not to do anything to the present Cabinet, but, as in the old story of Napoleon III being supported by the Algerian Army, to find someone to lead France who can support the war until the resistance is eliminated.
On the left bank of the Seine, in the Rue Solferino, was De Gaulle’s office in Paris, where De Gaulle met with some important guests when he was in Paris, except in his old country.
This time seven generals of the French army in Algeria returned to Paris, on behalf of is the collective will of the eight hundred thousand Algerian French army, if anything happens to them, eight hundred thousand French army will be killed in General Salan back to the mainland, which is not something unlikely to happen.
The seven generals arrived at the Rue Solferino and went straight into De Gaulle’s office to meet with the leader of Free France, in fact a steady stream of political figures had been arriving in recent times, but this was different, the visitor was representing the collective will of the eight hundred thousand French troops in Algeria.
“Henri, you still have quite a lot of nerve coming here in person.” De Gaulle immediately recognized the visitor when he saw him, calling Henri Lorillot by name, “Do you know, what your actions mean?”
“General de Gaulle, we really can’t tolerate domestic chaos, which could put France into the point of no return.” Henri Lorillo made his intentions clear straight away, “The only one who can save France now is you, just as you led Free France and reclaimed the glory of France in 1945, those bumbling politicians, who took away your power to lead this country, have left the country in the state it is in now.”
“Henri, it’s all in the past.” General de Gaulle mused, “But I agree that the chaos and weakness of the parliamentary system has weakened France.”
The period of De Gaulle’s downfall, as Henri Lorillot described it, was indeed very unjust in retrospect.
During this period, de Gaulle was forbidden to speak on radio and television. He was forced to travel between Brunaval and Strasbourg to publicize his ideas.
But the Rassemblement du peuple français did not get enough seats in the parliamentary elections to influence social policy and the state system. De Gaulle therefore decided to phase out the activities of the Rassemblement des peuples françaises. But this experience nurtured and mobilized many of de Gaulle’s followers.
“General, you alone now have the prestige to remake a united France and to continue the war to the end.”
“We are not far from total victory, the number of French immigrants and pro-France groups is two million, the number of migrating Algerians that we have set up no-man’s-land to centralize. Millions of rioters have been killed in a few years of combat, and we all agree that in another one to two years there will be no more living rebels.”
“The problem now is that the chaotic political situation at home is undoing the efforts of the soldiers, and once we give up on our Algerian brothers, France’s position will be in tatters and the whole of French Africa will fall apart. This is something France cannot afford.”
These generals from Algiers spoke up, each articulating their own reasons for De Gaulle to come out and bring France together, “The political instability has weakened France’s national power, and the soldiers are very sore about it.”
“Is that so?” General de Gaulle was deep in thought, seemingly considering whether the time was right.
In the evening, several generals left De Gaulle’s office, and it was clear from their expressions that the results of the talks were satisfactory.
The sun rises, the protests that lasted for three months, the evolving left and right blaming each other still continues, the French capital is almost in the midst of paralysis, the anti-war activists believe that the huge casualties caused by the war in Algeria has made France’s prestige hit rock bottom, while the supporters are calling for the state should take immediate and forceful measures to take these anti-war activists, who are paid to do this, to jail.
In some newspapers, reports calling for General de Gaulle to rectify the situation also appeared on the front page, and the image of General de Gaulle, who led Free France, appeared again in the public’s view.
