Chapter 995 – The Conservative Party comes to power
Looking back on the nearly fourteen years between 1945 and the present, when Adderley became British Prime Minister, Britain lost British India, British Burma, diminished influence over Egypt, the independence of Sudan, and Nigeria in the process of becoming independent.
But it had also succeeded in setting up a Malayan colony, returning economically to Burma, retaining a military base in Ceylon, and joining Portugal in importing goods into the Indian market through Goa. The Middle Eastern garrisons were still having an impact, and the African colonies were still fairly well established, which sort of put an end to the trend of constant backwardness.
Britain was free of the huge debt to the United States, which had been acquired in exchange for the independence of the colonies, including British India.
But it was also true that paying off the debt and getting out of the quagmire brought about by the war resulted in a boost in income and welfare.
Militarily, Britain maintained an army of 800,000 troops and successfully developed the atomic and hydrogen bombs.
The Air Force’s strategic bombers, the Navy’s new aircraft carriers, and the Army’s helicopter gunships were reintroduced into service with government support after the economy improved, and now Britain can still maintain the framework of the post-war triumvirate, although a gap with the U.S.S.R. has indeed emerged.
Compared with the memory of Britain in 1959, this difference is not insignificant, which is also the reason why Adderley led the Labor Party to an unprecedented succession of power.
Alan Wilson is not being modest either, and there is a bit of credit to be given to him for this in any case. Adhering to the principle of neutrality of civil servants, he naturally can not show distrust of the Conservative Party, but in the treatment of the Labor Party is far more sincere than the Conservative Party is also a fact.
Just look at what happened to several Conservative prime ministers during their terms of office, it is indeed difficult for him to have any trust in this party; the Suez Canal War broke out during Aidan’s term of office, and the British Empire lost face.
Macmillan’s signing of the Nassau Accord ceded the independent nuclear weapons system that Britain had spent so much money on.
Holm’s tenure announced global contraction, abandoning Malaya, the Middle East, and Africa altogether. PM Heath’s tenure saw the US completely smash the sterling area and Margaret Thatcher let Britain’s industry collapse.
So what’s a little welfare from a Labor Prime Minister? He could hardly fail to have a soft spot for Labor Prime Ministers like Aiden and Harold Wilson.
Dissolving Parliament, the Conservative Party under Aidan and the Labor Party under its new leader, Gaitschke, immediately went into a general election.
Rarely, the British government fell into the hands of the true cornerstone of the nation, and in the Cabinet Office conference room, Norman Brooke, full of bemusement, listened to the talk of senior Whitehall officials.
Which was more likely to become the new owner of 10 Downing Street, the respected Conservative Party leader, Aidan, or the widely supported Labor Party leader, Gaitschke?
“It’s hard to say, the situation is too treacherous to make hasty judgments.” Frank shook his head slightly, “Our money, oh no, the taxpayers’ legitimate taxes, can’t be wasted on useless things anyway.”
“Over at the Ministry of Defense, the services are grabbing for their money, if the new government can stop taking a harsh stance on military spending. I think we’d welcome a new minister.” Lawrence smiled slightly and said, “Of course, we all recognize that the necessary military inputs are a no-brainer to safeguard Britain’s interests, and I feel sure that Allen will support me.”
“Support? Oh yes, that’s right.” Alan Wilson froze then dripped, “Of course we have to take into account the interests of all parties and carefully think of a foolproof plan. There is an explanation for all parties, and although this has nothing to do with secrecy, ultimately it’s better not to let the ministers interfere with the normal running of the country, then again, if we have to face new ministers, I wonder if the honorable gentlemen are prepared for that?”
“I think Alan’s words make sense, one should think about how and the initiative to face a different minister.” Norman Brooke spoke up with great satisfaction, “Alan, do you have any proposals of great significance that would give the minister a sense of accomplishment?”
“There are 400,000 to 500,000 Indian immigrants in British Kenya with significant local influence. But according to our observation, the local blacks have a bad view of the Indians, thinking that they are outsiders, and this view is a fact. I’ve looked carefully at the immigration policy and found a loophole in it, and once something happens to Kenya or if it has to become independent, the position of these ethnic Indians will be awkward.” Alan Wilson smiled and pontificated, “If the new Foreign Secretary doesn’t mind, the resolution of this matter could give him a great sense of accomplishment.”
“Very good!” Norman Brooke nodded appreciatively and looked to the others, “We need to give the ministers a sense of accomplishment or they may exert excess energy that has nowhere to go.”
“Like translucent nurse’s uniforms and scattered toilet paper.” Alan Wilson couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
“Haha!” The Cabinet Office conference room was instantly filled with vibrant air, and happiness was contagious.
“Taking a general overview, looking back at the past and present, considering the average level of the ministers, analyzing and summarizing, perhaps it can be considered like this.” Norman Brooke let out a long breath, “To sum up and summarize, it is a fact that is more than obvious.”
“And yet they still claim to represent public opinion as the attitude of the electorate.” Frank concluded in a tone full of contempt.
“The level of the ministers and the level of the electorate are perfectly matched by a brain of ignorance, and the functioning of the government lies in the fact that the ministers look for solutions from the programs we offer, and make the most professional self-determination through our guidance.”
Norman Brooke gave a noncommittal account, “You all need to do your jobs and don’t let me worry about your ministers, now that it looks like Alan has an idea, you all need to think about how you’re going to face the ministers as well.”
“Yes Sir.” A group of senior Whitehall officials nodded their heads neatly, it was time to prove their reliability.
“It’s a test of sorts, to put a stranglehold on the selfish and anachronistic ideas of the ministers.” Norman Brooke lifted his wrist to glance at the time, “Care to stay for a drink?”
“Sir, we’re off.” The crowd agreed and rose to take their leave, everyone was busy, all the time no longer laboring for this country, in the case of the Ministry of the Interior, but also for the activities of the cultural industry.
Ender hadn’t officially taken office yet, and happened to be dragged into this gathering by Alan Wilson to talk about the evils of colonialism in a relaxed setting.
This party had Vivien Leigh, and Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor, who were at the peak of their acting powers, and the gold content was not too high, and the exoticism was also there, such as Ms. Charmaine.
But as far as Alan Wilson was concerned, there were only ladies who had rocketed before, were rocketing now and would rocket in the future.
“Vivian, you look great.” Gloria Garson complimented Vivienne without mincing words, “Your career has also developed enviably, I really didn’t expect you to come to this reception.”
“Gloria, you’re very attractive as well.” Fei Wenli’s eyes darted around, sweeping away from the man who was blabbering in the distance, and she said with two minds, “Even if we maintain it well, it can’t be compared to Hepburn and Taylor. Oh yeah, this is Summer Dream, I’m going to bring her into the European and American markets, Ingrid’s film company and United American Pictures, are going to make an outtake on the James Bond series, with the Pacific battlefield as the backdrop, about the plot of getting the information about Pearl Harbor.”
This prototype of historical facts in this time and space, of course, is to instill in Ender, rather than wrongly kill three thousand never let one of Alan Wilson, “In fact, the local environment is much easier than Malaya, before there are Chinese who want to move their industries to where they can’t go, you warned correctly, involving confrontation of the frontiers, and the United Kingdom has nothing to do with the colonial government if you have to colonize the government against it, then bankruptcy and liquidation is close at hand.”
It’s normal for the great buyers of Malaya to want to go to a place with a Chinese majority and run their own sweatshops. As an outsider Alan Wilson could understand that, but not to risk his own industry.
Especially fraudulent island is to be strictly prohibited, regardless of any reason, any excuse, dare to ask for money in this matter, then Allen Wilson will really let disobedient people no life.
“British East Africa is understrength, and after enlisting the natives of the colonies of Oceania in the army, they will be thrown into Africa. And a portion of the British army in Africa was withdrawn to replenish the Middle East and the British army in Germany respectively.”
Alan Wilson pondered as he took stock of the situation, “Africa is less developed and won’t make the islanders think much about it. As for contacting Australia more after arriving, the Mountbatten Group still has strong connections in Australia and can help when necessary.”
“Executive Undersecretary, when will I take office?” Ender expressed his understanding and then asked when he would depart.
“Preferably before the election results come out.” Ellen Wilson smiled, “None of us want a nasty change, do we?”
Ms. Summer Dream had come from a long distance and was unfamiliar with the area, the Executive Undersecretary in charge of diplomacy, adhering to the idea of the visitor being a guest and letting Ms. Summer Dream get to know her better, personally conducted the reception.
Summer dream of seasickness and seasickness needle, but try to cooperate with Alan Wilson’s diplomatic work, the guests and masters of harmony, talk about it.
Alan Wilson also took the time to cope with the American side of the common position on the French move, said that now the United Kingdom is in the middle of the election, it is really not the time, all the problems wait until the results of the election, will be responded to by the new government.
This reason is justified, now let the UK to respond to the UK can not do, if it is what the Soviet Union, perhaps the candidates of the two parties will still wrestle with, on the French position on the general election will not help.
In June, legal voters came out in droves, ready to cast their sacred votes in the fourth general election since the war. Polling places were overcrowded and, as in the last election, the situation was quite tense for most of the time, with the Conservatives and the Labor Party in a neck-and-neck race.
Labor had an overwhelming advantage in Scotland, but was at a disadvantage in England. The burning situation lasted until the end, when the Conservative Party led by Aidan defeated the Labor Party by thirty-three votes, and the Labor Party’s consecutive rule came to an end.
