On the way back, Chen Shi and Wang Daji agreed that Wang Daji wouldn’t interfere in his affairs, and Wang Daji readily agreed.

When they pulled up to the apartment complex, Chen Shi saw Lin Dongxue waiting for him. Wang Daji’s eyes lit up. “Whoa, is that your chick? She’s a real stunner! From head to toe!”

“Behave yourself.”

“Mimicking Chen Shi’s tone, Wang Daji said, “Wang Daji, stay in the car and don’t interfere with my business!” Then he jumped out and ran toward Lin Dongxue.

Chen Shi felt a wave of despair and gritted his teeth in frustration.

Seeing “Chen Shi” approach, Lin Dongxue said, “No need to go upstairs. I don’t want Yueyue to hear this.”

“What’s wrong?” Wang Daji asked.

Wang Daji said earnestly, “Do you know why I went to that woman?”

Chen Shi couldn’t take it anymore. He quietly got out of the car, walked to a convenience store, and bought a can of spray paint.

Returning, Wang Daji was still “explaining,” and Lin Dongxue’s eyes were filled with disgust.

Just then, Lin Dongxue’s phone rang. She answered, “Captain Peng? You need me for something… What’s so important…” She walked away.

Chen Shi approached Wang Daji from behind, tapped his shoulder, and when Wang Daji turned around, sprayed his face with paint. Wang Daji growled, “What are you doing?”

“Shut up and stay put!”

Chen Shi dragged him to a nearby flowerbed and warned, “Say one more word, and you’ll regret it. Stay here and don’t move!”

“That girl likes you,” Wang Daji smirked.

Chen Shi glared at him threateningly, then tossed the spray can aside and went back to where he had been talking with Lin Dongxue.

Lin Dongxue returned after her call. “I’m leaving. We’re no longer friends. I won’t work with you on cases anymore. Ask Xiaodong for help.”

Chen Shi felt a surge of frustration. What a mess. He said sincerely, “I was wrong. I’m sorry.”

“Weren’t you just arguing a moment ago? Why the sudden change of heart?” Lin Dongxue’s eyes welled with tears. “Why are you apologizing to me? We have no relationship!”

“I… I don’t want to lose you as a friend. It would make me very sad.”

“Why should I care if you’re sad? I’m leaving!” Lin Dongxue turned and walked away. Chen Shi followed silently until they reached the edge of the complex.

“Don’t follow me. Seeing you makes me sick!”

“I know you’re angry. Yell at me if it helps.”

Lin Dongxue couldn’t hold back anymore. “The thought of you going to a place like that and doing those things with those women makes me sick! How can you have no principles? You’re a consultant for the team! And you expect me to believe it was just once? Who knows how many times you’ve been there? “What can I do to make it up to you?”

“Disappear from my sight!” Lin Dongxue turned, her face wet with tears, and headed toward a taxi.

Chen Shi felt a sharp pain in his chest and a surge of anger.

Returning to the complex, Wang Daji emerged from the flowerbed. “Bro, you’re terrible at dealing with women. You never admit fault in these situations. I just salvaged your chances, and now they’re gone.”

Chen Shi wanted to punch his face. “Get out of Long’an!”

“Who are you talking to? I’m the real Chen Shi. You’re the impostor. If anyone should leave, it’s you! And don’t try to fight me. You might not win.”

Chen Shi sat down, clutching his head, his thoughts in turmoil.

“I need to wash my face. How can I be seen with it like this? Is your place nearby?”

“Don’t even think about it.”

“Hey,” Wang Daji nudged him, “I can tell you like that girl. There’s another way. You’re good at solving cases, right?”

Chen Shi looked at him.

“The other day, I wasn’t just out for fun. I was looking for someone. This guy killed my brother. I didn’t find him, but the girls there were too tempting, so I indulged.”

“Your brother?”

“Can I wash my face first? The paint’s drying.”

“Come upstairs!”

Chen Shi led Wang Daji inside. Tao Yueyue looked wary when she saw the stranger. “Don’t worry, Yueyue. He’s a friend.”

Wang Daji said, “I’m as close to your dad as can be.”

“He’s not my dad!”

“Whoa, so you have a… Hey!” Wang Daji’s comment was cut off by the towel Chen Shi threw over his face.

After Wang Daji cleaned his face, Tao Yueyue’s eyes widened. “Two Uncle Chens?”

“Here’s what’s going on…” Chen Shi explained the situation. Tao Yueyue understood and asked, “What should I call him?”

“Just call him Wang Daji.”

“Call him Uncle Wang!”

“Wang Daji.”

“You’re so clueless. Clearly, you haven’t been teaching her well.” Wang Daji grumbled.

“Get to the point!” Chen Shi snapped.

“Alright, alright,” Wang Daji lit a cigarette. “Four years ago, my brother and I worked at a company. Don’t look at me like that. I might be a mess, but I had a job. We were security guards. At the end of the year, the company didn’t pay us. A bunch of workers went to protest. I thought the boss was an asshole for withholding their pay, so my brother and I broke into the office safe at night and distributed the money. But the safe had more than just cash. There was a USB drive. I took it. We got caught on camera. Surprisingly, the company didn’t call the cops. Instead, the boss came to us, offering a large sum for the USB. I figured it had something incriminating. I kept raising the price, knowing they couldn’t pay. Secretly, I never intended to give it back!”

“What was on the USB? Where is it now?”

“No idea. Some documents. I couldn’t make sense of them, so I formatted it and used it to store porn… and then lost it.”
