Leaving Wei Yi’s house, KK was still worried about whether he could afford the fee. Chen Shi said, “Don’t worry about it. Just finish the investigations I assigned. You and Xiao Chong won’t be shortchanged.”

“Chen, what about you?” KK asked.

Chen Shi glanced at Tao Yueyue, “Yueyue has school tomorrow, so we’re not running around today. I’ll take her home. Let’s continue our game when we get back, okay?”

Tao Yueyue replied, “I don’t mind.”

“See you tomorrow!” Chen Shi said to KK.

The past few days of running around with a lot of people had been exhausting. Back home, they could finally relax.

That evening, they ordered grilled meat rice for delivery. Thinking there might not be much else happening today, Chen Shi planned to have a drink. After quitting smoking, the occasional glass of whiskey was his only pleasure.

Just then, Sun Zhen sent a message, “Chen, I checked the fire victim’s information again. She owned a car, a Bluebird.”

Chen Shi immediately called back, “Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“What about KK?”

“After dinner, he said he would finish checking the remaining apartments while it was quiet. He hasn’t returned yet.”

Chen Shi hung up and called KK, but there was no answer. Fearing something might have happened, he quickly told Yueyue to get dressed and prepared to leave.

Half an hour earlier, KK had returned to the community. Using his usual methods, he knocked on doors to ensure no one was home before picking the locks. When he entered the fire-damaged apartment, he saw the walls were still blackened and not repainted. Entering the bedroom, he was shocked by what he saw.

On a double bed lay a beautifully dressed zombie. Its dry, dark brown skin clung to its bones like parchment. It wore a dress and a wig, looking like a doll.

Against the wall was a table with two chairs, each occupied by another dressed-up zombie. One was dressed as a French lady, and the other, smaller one wore Gothic Lolita clothes.

The room was very cold, with the air conditioning on full blast. A smell of disinfectant permeated the air. On the shelf at the back, jars containing various human organs were lined up, eerily lifelike.

Terrified, KK turned to leave, but a man was standing behind him, staring with dead eyes. The man swung a wrench, hitting KK’s head, knocking him out cold.

After knocking KK out, the man went into the bedroom and lovingly caressed the zombie on the bed, saying, “Peipei, did he scare you?”

“Dear, you came back just in time. I was so scared! I didn’t know what he would do to me!” He mimicked a woman’s voice, talking to himself.

“It seems we’ve been discovered. I’ll take you somewhere safe. Don’t worry, I’m here.”

“You’re so kind!”

The man kissed the zombie’s lips tenderly, then carefully carried her down to the underground garage. He ran back up to retrieve the other two zombies the same way.

Finally, he returned, looked at the groaning KK on the floor, and took his phone from his pocket. There were several missed calls, but he neither called back nor answered. After some hesitation, he took a needleless syringe filled with a yellowish liquid and forced it down KK’s throat before leaving.

As he left, he broke the key in the lock.

In the car, the two zombies “spoke,” “I told you to be wary of the cops that came this morning. Now we’re exposed!”

“You only care about Peipei, no security measures at all. What will you do now?”

The man shouted, “Shut up! Do you want to be discovered?”

The zombie dressed as a French lady “asked,” “Have you found a place to hide?”

“I have a plan, Qiqi. Just sit tight and don’t talk.”

“Hmph, I hope we don’t get caught this time. Living with you is nerve-wracking. My skin will suffer.”

Li Xiang started the car and drove towards the west gate. The security guard was on the phone, glancing outside. Seeing the car, he rushed out with a rubber baton, shouting, “Stop! Stop!”

The electric gate wasn’t open, so Li Xiang had to stop. The guard glanced into the car, then shouted, “Get out, you freak!”

Sweating, Li Xiang reached for the corpse in the passenger seat, pretending to escape through the other door. The guard circled around to block him, but Li Xiang kicked open the driver’s door and ran with the corpse.

“Stop!”

The overweight guard gave chase but soon fell behind. Panting, he returned and looked inside the car, muttering, “Freak.”

He remembered to call Chen Shi, “Officer, I saw the freak you mentioned.”

“Great, hold him there. I’m on my way!” Chen Shi sounded like he was driving.

“Uh, he ran…”

“What!?”

“He can’t have gone far. He left his car and ran with a corpse. He won’t get far.”

Chen Shi sighed in frustration. “Got it.” He had hoped the guard would detain him, but civilians aren’t cops, and this was a miscalculation. Driving, he called Lin Dongxue…

A few minutes later, Chen Shi arrived. The guard eagerly recounted his “harrowing” experience. Chen Shi glanced inside the car and, worried about KK, ran into the community.

With no one to listen, the guard turned to Tao Yueyue, “I never expected such a freak to live here. He ran so fast, I couldn’t catch him… By the way, is that man your father?”

“Yes,” Tao Yueyue said, curious about the Bluebird. She climbed in.

In the backseat sat two meticulously dressed corpses, their hollow eyes chilling. But Tao Yueyue wasn’t too disturbed. She reached out and touched the corpse’s skin, finding it dry and cold like rubber.

So this is a zombie.

She noticed a seam at the shoulder joint and tried lifting an arm, which moved like a doll’s. When she gently pulled, the arm came off the body…
