Chapter 907: I Am Song Lang
The people who arrived were Chen Shi, KK, and Lin Dongxue. Seeing them, Tao Yueyue’s tightly wound nerves finally relaxed, and she nearly burst into tears. Lin Dongxue crouched down and hugged Tao Yueyue, crying tears of joy, “I’m so glad you’re okay.”
Tao Yueyue could no longer hold back and cried on her shoulder.
Over the past few days, Chen Shi and Lin Dongxue had been nearly frantic. The new captain assigned to Team Two was strict and unyielding. Unlike Lin Qiupu, who tolerated the consultants’ “antics,” the new captain would not allow Chen Shi to be involved in the case. Furthermore, the new captain was still investigating the murder of Lie Guoxiao, and finding a missing little girl was not part of a detective’s duties.
As a result, Lin Dongxue almost resigned, but Chen Shi persuaded her to stay.
Chen Shi, KK, and Sun Zhen had been searching for Tao Yueyue. Just when they were at a loss, this afternoon, Chen Shi received a phone call that rang three times before hanging up. When he tried to call back, the phone was already turned off.
Even if the phone was turned off, it could be tracked through the PIN code. Following the trail, they found the location where Zhou Xiao had parked. With the help of nearby surveillance footage, Chen Shi, who had been anxiously searching for days, finally saw Tao Yueyue’s image and nearly choked up with relief.
Lin Dongxue pleaded with Team Two for help. After work, everyone worked tirelessly to track the car until they heard gunshots coming from the villa. That was when they arrived…
“Yueyue, you’ve been through so much,” Chen Shi said, patting Tao Yueyue on the head. He had so much to say but didn’t know where to start. He reached out and took the gun from her.
Zhou Xiao burst into wild laughter, “A renowned detective, and in the end, it was a little girl who caught me. Give me a cigarette!”
“She’s not just any little girl, Zhou Xiao. You’ve got the wrong person,” Chen Shi said as he pulled out a whole pack of cigarettes. “Throw the gun over here.”
Zhou Xiao slid the gun over and then caught the cigarettes and lighter Chen Shi tossed to him. He eagerly bit open the pack, trembling as he lit up a cigarette. The smoky fumes filled his lungs, and he trembled with relief. Chen Shi produced a pair of handcuffs. “You’d better cooperate, or your injuries will worsen.”
Zhou Xiao rolled his eyes at Chen Shi and muttered, “I will never tell the truth about what happened back then. I won’t say a word. We’re all doomed! Song Lang!”
Chen Shi smiled calmly. “I’ve been expecting this day. My fate no longer matters. Song Lang already has the best successor.”
Zhou Xiao was stung by jealousy. He extinguished his cigarette and said, “She was one of us. The teacher already had her in mind.”
Chen Shi looked at him with a complex expression. This man had been lost in darkness for so long; he would never understand.
Outside, sirens were blaring as other officers arrived. Zhou Xiao was handcuffed and escorted to the hospital for treatment.
As Tao Yueyue was leaving the building, she noticed that the couple in the master bedroom was still fast asleep, completely unaware of the earth-shattering events that had transpired outside.
The rich woman had truly been unfortunate. The later surveillance footage revealed that when she woke up from her coma, she saw the killer and mistook him for someone she had hired to deal with an adulterous affair. She even greeted him. Without a word, the killer shot her in the temple and then stabbed her a few more times.
Tao Yueyue told Lin Dongxue, “Sister Lin, it was her husband who hired Zhou Xiao to kill her.”
“We’ll sort out everything in detail later,” Lin Dongxue said, stroking her head. “Are you hungry?”
“I am, but there’s something important I need to do,” Tao Yueyue said seriously. She turned and called out, “Uncle Chen!”
Tao Yueyue let go of Lin Dongxue’s hand and hugged Chen Shi. The long-awaited embrace gave her warm strength, and tears flowed again. She said, “I’m sorry! I caused you so much trouble.”
“Don’t be silly. In the future, don’t avoid problems. I’m not a good example in this regard,” Chen Shi said.
Tao Yueyue suddenly realized she had made a miscalculation and, in panic, said, “Shouldn’t I have killed him in self-defense? Otherwise, he would have exposed your secret…”
Chen Shi wiped her tears away. “No, you did the right thing. He deserves to be judged, and all the truth should come to light.”
He turned to Lin Dongxue and said, “During this time, please take care of Yueyue.”
“Ah, where are you going?” Lin Dongxue asked, puzzled.
Chen Shi smiled, and Tao Yueyue realized what was happening. She grabbed his hand and pleaded, “No, no, don’t leave me!”
“Yueyue, I can’t avoid this any longer.”
He stepped outside, where the police were elated about capturing the fugitive. Chen Shi suddenly shouted, “Everyone, there’s another fugitive you need to catch tonight!”
“What? Does Zhou Xiao have accomplices?”
Chen Shi said, “The fugitive Song Lang, former captain of Long’an City’s Criminal Police Team Two, is wanted for the murder of two police officers. Four years ago, he underwent plastic surgery and escaped capture with a new face…”
The crowd looked on with shock and confusion. Tao Yueyue covered her mouth in distress, while Lin Dongxue frowned, as if understanding something.
Chen Shi took a deep breath and extended his hands, waiting for the handcuffs. “I am Song Lang!”
At the moment he said this, Chen Shi felt a dizzying sensation as if facing the blazing sun, but the pressure he had been holding inside for so long dissipated instantly.
“No way!”
“How could Brother Chen be…”
The officers erupted in disbelief. Tao Yueyue cried into Lin Dongxue’s arms. This scene was even more painful for her than everything she had been through in recent days.
No one stepped forward to put handcuffs on Chen Shi. Old Zhang, in disbelief, said, “You’re really Captain Song? Many of the old team members believed the case was a frame-up, and you disappeared because you couldn’t clear your name.”
“Yes.”
“That’s definitely the case!”
Many people agreed, knowing Chen Shi’s character well. They could not believe that either Chen Shi or Song Lang was a murderer.
Chen Shi shook his head with a wry smile. “Old Zhang, I won’t say anything to defend myself. I’m just a suspect now. Please investigate the case. I leave my life in your hands.”
Old Zhang stepped in front of Chen Shi, looked at the stubbornly extended hands, and said with reluctance, “Captain Song, perhaps we don’t need to put the handcuffs on.”
“Follow protocol.”
Old Zhang sighed, looked around at the others, and then pulled out the handcuffs and put them on Chen Shi.
As Chen Shi got into the police car, he smiled at Tao Yueyue. That smile broke her heart…
