Chapter 952: A New Witness
After drawing their conclusions, Lin Dongxue and Tao Yueyue hurried to the staircase. They searched thoroughly but found nothing. Lin Dongxue said, “Whatever fell here has probably been picked up already.”
“What could have fallen here?” Tao Yueyue looked at the stairs, “The deceased had dust on him, a fractured skull, but no broken ribs. Is it possible he curled up and rolled down the stairs?”
“Entirely possible!” Lin Dongxue had thought of this as soon as they discussed the stairs.
“So the screenwriter is the killer?” To be honest, Tao Yueyue didn’t want to believe it, as the screenwriter had always been kind and helpful to them.
“We’ll have to see what the forensic results say. I’ll ask them to check this area too.”
“Won’t that alert the suspect?”
“No, I’ll tell them to be discreet.” Lin Dongxue checked her watch, “They should be here soon. Let’s go meet them outside!”
As they walked out, Tao Yueyue said, “The main issue is, why did an obvious fall down the stairs turn into a suspicious fall case? There’s definitely some trickery involved.”
“Haha, detective novel terminology. Any ideas, little detective?”
Tao Yueyue remained silent, vaguely forming a hypothesis but lacking clear details. It felt like the truth was just out of reach.
Outside, Tao Yueyue looked up, pondering how the killer managed it.
Soon, the police car arrived. Colleagues from the bureau, carrying investigation kits, entered the building, asking Lin Dongxue, “How’s the film crew? Any photos with stars?”
“You’ll see real stars soon enough,” Lin Dongxue laughed.
They led the forensic officers to collect biological information from those involved. Lin Dongxue also assigned four officers to check the stairs and the conference room and examine the dummy.
As they knocked on each door, Lin Dongxue said, “Wait, last night the screenwriter came out immediately. He couldn’t have been upstairs.”
Tao Yueyue calmly said, “I think that’s part of the trick.”
“Haha.” Lin Dongxue ruffled her hair, “You don’t want him to be the killer, yet you’re thinking hard about how he did it.”
“The allure of the truth!” Tao Yueyue smiled, “Sister Lin, when we visit the screenwriter, I want to sneak in and investigate.”
“Sure, I’ll distract him.”
When they knocked on the screenwriter’s door, Lin Dongxue said, “We need to collect your fingerprints and DNA.”
“Sure, sure. Do you need a blood sample?”
“No, we’ll just come inside.”
“Please, come in.”
Inside, Lin Dongxue smelled a strong odor. The screenwriter laughed, “I have a bad habit of smoking non-stop while writing. The room must smell terrible. Should I open a window?”
“No need…” Lin Dongxue noticed the computer on the table with a document open, “Writing a new script?”
“Yes, it’s a period drama.”
“Wow, you cover a wide range, modern one moment, period drama the next.”
“Just doing my job. Drafting is easy, but editing is a nightmare. A script might go through countless revisions, really draining.”
Lin Dongxue suddenly asked, “Did anyone ask you to revise a script yesterday?”
“Uh…” The screenwriter was stunned, “No, the script for this movie is finalized, no more changes needed.”
While they talked, Tao Yueyue sneaked to the window and checked around but found nothing unusual. She peeked under the bed and saw an aluminum telescopic rod, glanced at it, then quickly returned to Lin Dongxue’s side.
After collecting the biological samples, the police left. The screenwriter saw them off, smiling and waving at Tao Yueyue, who smiled and nodded back.
Lin Dongxue whispered, “Did you find anything, little detective?”
“An aluminum rod, no idea what it’s for.”
By noon, the police excitedly discussed meeting Cai Zhengkai and Xia Xiaolou. The producer approached them, saying, “Thank you for your hard work. I’d like to treat you to a meal.”
Lin Dongxue replied, “We appreciate it, but we should keep some distance while investigating.”
“I just want to know the current progress.”
“We’re working continuously. I’ll inform you once we have results, alright?”
The producer sighed and was about to leave when Lin Dongxue called him back, “Producer, I have a question for you.”
“Oh, go ahead.”
“Did Xiao Ai often revise scripts?”
“Not often, but he was responsible for reviewing them.”
“I thought you did the revisions.”
“No, no, I’m too busy for that. I don’t even know the main character’s name. Xiao Ai handled both acting and revising the script… Sadly, now no one will act out the revised script.” Thinking of his deceased son, the producer sighed deeply.
After he left, Lin Dongxue said, “This man claims to be the deceased’s father. Remember to check the DNA.”
After lunch, the forensic team returned, asking, “Captain Chen wants to know if you need more people. Can you handle this alone?”
Lin Dongxue patted Tao Yueyue, “What do you mean alone? I have the clever Yueyue with me. Tell him to wait for our good news!”
Tao Yueyue said, “Uncle, I have a favor to ask. I need a dummy.”
“Oh!” The forensic officer slapped his forehead, “I almost forgot. We brought a dummy for experiments, it’s in the trunk. Let me get it for you.”
After receiving the dummy, Tao Yueyue was disappointed, “It’s so ugly.”
The forensic officer said, “It’s for experiments, not a movie. Look, it’s hollow, you can add water bags to increase the weight.”
“I’ll make use of it,” Lin Dongxue said.
The forensic team left, and Tao Yueyue hugged the dummy, pondering, “How long will the results take?”
“A week at most, a day or two if we’re lucky.”
“I don’t have that much vacation left. School starts the day after tomorrow.”
“I’ll push for speed… Now, we just wait. Let’s rest for a bit.”
“Alright!”
When they returned to their room, a cleaning lady was waiting outside, timidly asking, “Are you police officers?”
“Yes, I am.”
“My colleague said you’re investigating the death last night. I have something to say. I might have seen the person committing suicide.”
“What did you say? Suicide?”
“Yes, last night while I was cleaning that floor, I saw someone sitting on the window ledge. Before I could react, they fell. Honestly, I’ve never seen anyone jump off a building before. It scared me a lot. I couldn’t calm down in the dormitory, replaying that scene in my mind. I wasn’t sure whether to call the police. Later, I heard you were investigating, and when I saw you questioning people room by room, I thought you might not know it was a suicide. So, I came to tell you.”
