Part 2 The Faceless Man Chapter 65 – Free?
AFTER DINNER, in the pool room of The Brave.
Dressed in a simple black jacket that matched the style of the place and a dark cap, Klein closed the door behind him and walked over to Kaspers, who was bending his back and trying to hit the ball.
Before he could squeeze out a smile and open his mouth to greet him, Kaspers had stopped moving, straightened up, and glanced at him:
”Maric’s not here.”
”No extra kind of party you wanted.”
”I have nothing but weapons.”
…… The routine is familiar. …… Luckily, I have a different purpose today. …… Klein tugged at the corner of his mouth:
”I’m just here to buy weapons.”
Maric is not here again …… It seems that this stronghold was exposed and targeted by enemies, and simply moved the place …… Then I can not contact the bodyguard lady ah …… And I intend to use it to bluff Miller Carter’s helpers are Marich’s walkers …… and secretive and obedient and not afraid of death, well, obedient provided the spirituality shields it from the influence of the Aztec Copper Whistle …… As he spoke, a series of thoughts flashed within Klein’s mind.
Slightly surprised, Kaspers leaned back on his cue suspiciously and rubbed his rosacea:
”What kind of weapon are you getting? Run out of bullets from earlier? Been practicing a lot.”
No, I’ve been practicing with all the extra bullets I bought at the Krag Club …… Klein said with a smile in his eyes:
”I want to buy dynamite, the kind widely used in mines.”
”What do you want?” Kaspers snapped, his expression then becoming stoic and serious, “I’m warning you, don’t try to do anything damn big! I won’t allow my customers to pick on Severus Field! Of course, you may not purchase weapons from me.”
Being able to be a black market weapons merchant and live up to this point, in a way, is still very disciplined, at least not selling to that kind of crazy guy …… Klein habitually gave the comment from the position of the night watchman, while smiling, “You seem to misunderstand something, I don’t intend to blow up bank vault’s door, and I don’t intend to create sensational news, I’m just helping someone do the demolition of the building to facilitate the subsequent remodeling.”
”Then why didn’t he go to a regular construction company?” Kaspers didn’t let his guard down.
”Haha, it’s a secret room, he doesn’t want outsiders to know about it.” Klein turned and asked, “Do you know any reliable demolition experts? I’m not really good at this kind of thing, and I’m afraid of bringing down the whole house.”
Kaspers saw that the other man was still considering keeping the house intact, and the doubt in his heart dissipated considerably.
Just before he weighed his reply, a disembodied and fluttering voice suddenly resounded in the room:
”No need.”
Familiarity surged, and Klein was busy twisting his head to look and realized that Miss Bodyguard had somehow sat on a chair in the corner.
She was still wearing a long black gothic court dress and a compact fedora of the same color, her face as pale as ever, while her pale blonde hair and delicate features mirrored each other.
”Good evening, ma’am.” Klein bent slightly and curtsied.
”Good evening, Ms. Sharon.” Kaspers made the same gesture.
It turned out that her name was Sharon …… Klein waited thoughtfully for the other party to speak.
Instead, the bodyguard lady known as Sharon looked over at Kaspers and said:
”Maric won’t be coming back here after this.”
”If you have something you want to see him about, leave a message the third way as agreed.”
”Okay, Ms. Sharon.” Kaspers, an old man who’d obviously seen it all, seemed to have an instinctive fear of Ms. Bodyguard.
Hearing this, Klein interjected:
”If, and I mean if, I want to get Maric’s help, how do I contact him?”
”Ask for Kaspers.” Sharon replied very succinctly.
”Okay.” Klein spread his hands and said with a hmm, “What did you mean earlier when you said you didn’t need a demolition expert?”
Sharon’s azure eyes didn’t waver in the slightest:
”I am.”
You are? You’re the demolitions expert? Wait, aren’t you an extraordinary person with special abilities, probably Sequence 5? How come you’re also a part-time Demolition Expert …… Klein froze for a moment, and actually didn’t know how to answer.
In the end, he chose to trust Ms. Bodyguard and said with deliberation:
”I went to visit ……”
Before he finished his words, he took his gaze and swept it to Kaspers, meaning that the next topic was not suitable for this ordinary person.
By the very nature of his body, the black market weapons merchant did count as a commoner as well …… Klein silently added.
Sharon looked sideways at Kaspers and said:
”You go prepare the explosives.”
”Two pounds.”
”He’s out.”
”Yes, Ms. Sharon.” Kaspers swept a glance at Klein and limped out of the pool room, and didn’t forget to close the door behind him.
Seeing the bodyguard lady just looking at him without saying anything, Klein got the feeling that he was being watched by a female ghost and busily organized his words:
”I inquired about Pound’s address from the Baron and paid him a visit in the middle of the night ……”
After relaying Raft Pound’s words as they were, Klein began to show reasoning, reasoning backwards from the result to the process:
”I think he lied about a lot of things, a Viscount family can’t be so easily controlled by someone secretly.”
”Even a child could notice the anomaly, how could the royal family and the church be unaware of it?”
”After Raft Pound’s fall, there were very many opportunities to come into contact with outsiders and other nobles, and with a little bit of courage, he could have easily solved the problem.”
”Therefore, I think he must be hiding something, and the probability is that it has something to do with that underground building.”
”Judging from his state, that suspected evil spirit won’t be able to get out of the trap for a long time, so I’m going to get some explosives and sabotage the entrance, so that no one else will have a chance to get in, ergo, I’m afraid that they’ll release the evil spirit by mistake.”
”Hmm.” Sharon, the bodyguard lady, didn’t affirm Klein’s idea, but didn’t make a denial either.
At this point, Klein hesitantly asked:
”I don’t know how to blast, so I’m going to draw a layout map and ask a blasting expert to give the location and portion of explosives to be planted, how much do I need to pay if, if, once again, I ask you to help?”
If it’s too expensive, I’d be better off with a general demolition expert, after all, I’m only 50 pounds for this order, and the bodyguard lady is 1,000 pounds for 3 days …… Klein has long been prepared for this.
”Free.” Sharon replied in the same style of saving words when she could.
Free? Klein was stunned.
In his common sense, free was the most expensive!
Sharon sat quietly and took a few seconds before explaining slightly:
”After blowing up the entrance, I was the only one left who could get in and out of there.”
”That in itself is what I hope to do.”
In other words, you plan to get rid of the evil spirits and harvest the items inside once you’re sure enough? Blowing up the exit is actually helping you to eliminate interference and possible covetousness, after all, other sequences of extraordinary people can’t get through the boulders and dirt like spirits can …… Well, except for the “Apprentice” path, but they don’t know about that underground building! …… Klein nodded with some realization:
”Deal!”
After saying that, he was busy adding:
”Well …… you borrow a few more henchmen from Marich, henchmen with a tight enough mouth, this is the helpers shown to Miller Carter.”
”Good.” Sharon didn’t refuse.
Klein purposely didn’t bother mentioning the payment for this, flashing a smile:
”Ten o’clock tomorrow morning, then.”
”We’ll have to explore the surrounding terrain beforehand, so we can’t let the blasting cause any obvious damage.”
Sharon nodded gently, her figure fading and disappearing.
……
On Saturday morning, Hugh Dilcha once again took a public carriage to the East End, stage-managing to make sure her commission had paid off.
As she waited for the change, she had a sudden urge to buy a newspaper and read it.
She pulled out a one-penny coin and bought a copy of the Birkeland Post from the newsboy next to her, flipping through it quickly.
Suddenly her gaze froze at a news item on page three:
”This paper reports that at 7:10 last night a serious explosion, suspected to have been caused by a gas leak, occurred in the apartments at No. 1 Dharavi Street, East End, and that the tenant in room No. 6 on the third floor, where the explosion took place, was killed on the spot, not even leaving his body intact, and that as of midnight this explosion had resulted in the deaths of three persons and the wounding of sixteen others … …”
Dharavi Street No. 1 …… Apartment No. 6 on the 3rd floor …… This, isn’t this the place Williams rented? He’s dead? Died in an explosion caused by a gas leak? No, no! That’s definitely not it! He wouldn’t have had the luxury of using gas at all, even if it was installed there! He had just accepted my commission. Could it be because of that? However, Lanlus himself is a wanted man, and when he found out that someone was looking for him, a change of scenery was just that, there was no need to kill someone to keep a secret, which in turn could easily expose the problem ……
The way this thing is done is too strange and too radical, like the work of a madman ……
Obviously just a scammer ……
Poor Williams ……
I, for one, will avenge you!
Will certainly find out the truth!
Hugh looked sadly and stolidly at the public carriage which had stopped before her, and did not go up.
She knew that it would be very dangerous to go to the East End now.
She intended to go back at once and tell Forsyth to move temporarily to that rented house in the spare, and herself, in disguise, to sneak into the East End, to look for acquaintances to make inquiries, to make a preliminary clarification of what happened, and to catch the traces left by the murderer.
Hey, Miss Audrey’s commission is really no less dangerous …… is that I feel that the fraudster who is already wanted, as long as he is not blocked and not allowed to escape, he will not fight back viciously …… is that I am negligent and careless, and it is me who killed Williams …… Well, that doesn’t rule out the possibility that he was gathering information about other things at the same time, which could have caused the disaster …… Hugh closed his eyes and crossed the street toward the waiting spot across the street.
……
At 10:14, Klein and Sharon, the bodyguard lady, confirmed the condition of the ground corresponding to that Quaternary building and arrived outside the house at 8 Williams Street.
Sharon had disappeared, and Miller-Carter saw Detective Sherlock Moriarty in a gray and blue workman’s uniform with a ducktail hat and his three silent and blustery assistants.
”It makes it easier to explore.” Klein explained.
Miller-Carter’s eyes swept over the three seemingly capable assistants and nodded in satisfaction:
”Your preparations were quicker than I expected, and they have snake repellent experts in them?”
”Yes, they are all very good at repelling snakes.” Klein replied in the affirmative without hesitation.
How could a walker be afraid of being bitten by a snake?
